Ancient Greece was never a unified state. The “Hellenic Republic” never existed. Cities had alliances with other cities and were called leagues. All of Hellas was a collection of city states and other towns and villages ruled by bigger cities. Macedonia technically unified all these cities into one kingdom under Phillip 2nds rule but cities like Athens, Sparta, Corinth had autonomy. Alexander the Greats empire encompassed all of Greece and than his generals afterwards ruled them. But this period isn’t really referred to as the classical Greek age. Really the first example of a united Greek state autonomous from everyone came in the 19th century.
