I got a C+ for one of my quarters in a class (somehow still averaged a b+) for the year and I got accepted into Stanford last month! I also didn’t make my school’s hockey team any marching band twice before finally making it and I took the sat 4 times. My first 3 times I got a 1360 three times in a row. My 4th time I finally got a 1500! Everyone fails while working towards their dreams!
Aamir i mean she literally failed at some things she was passionate about and tried for, as well as a whole AP exam. It's not meant to be " I got 3 F's and got into Stanford" because that simply doesn't happen, but it does serve it's purpose in that you don't have to be perfect all the time to get into your dream school
Not all failures are the biggest failures in the world (particularly in high school). They're still failures. I was a competitive cheerleader since 5th grade-- I had been competing in that sport for the majority of my life at that point and I didn't (originally) make the squad for something that I considered a primary activity. Singing was also a primary activity of mine. I had been singing, doing competitive singing groups since 5th grade also, and even for a time considered MAJORING in voice/music in college. To "fail" in this activity for me and be basically ousted from the outlet I had for it at school was a hit for me. I realize in hindsight this or the other failures may not seem that significant to many people in light of other events or an ability to succeed in other ways, but to me at the time they seemed significant and that's my point. We all have moments when our failures seem overwhelming, but in fact, when you sum them up and have other opportunities to succeed, the failures don't seem so bad. The truth is that can be everyone's story. You don't have to go to an elite school to have a successful life, and you don't have to be perfect at everything you do. If you want to achieve things or make progress in some way, you're likely going to fail sometimes. Failure is not the end of a story, nor does it necessarily mean flunking out of school (if that is your story, Stanford is probably not happening, but that doesn't mean you still can't succeed.somehow.) It does mean some opportunities may close to you, but it doesn't mean you can't make more of them.
Hi Brooke! I've been watching you since middle school and you've been a great help to me in my testing and college application process. I was accepted into Brown ED this fall and I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your helpful videos throughout the years. I'm going to miss watching all your videos lol. Keep being amazing
I always get so nervous when I see how perfect your record needs to be to get into these types of schools, and it’s so great to see that you don’t always have to be perfect
That depends on your school and state. For example, I live in Texas, and public universities must accept an AP score of 3 or higher as credit. Dual enrollment courses, whether it’s offered by a local community college or a larger public university (like UT’s OnRamps), it’s usually accepted by other universities in Texas if you attended another institution in TX. I would say that a general difference between AP and DE is the test taking. If you aren’t a good standardized test taker (~3 hours of multiple choice and writing exams), DE is for you.
There was a time I was in musical theater, wanted to make it my living. Went to a lot of auditions, but was rejected a most. Did get cast in some chorus parts, but in general rejected. Skip ahead 5 years... Now a very good friend of mine wanted someone to accompany her to NY to an audition. She gets really nervous and just wanted someone there. While at the cattle call, we were told I couldn't stay unless I was also auditioning. So I downloaded some sheet music and signed up. Now I hadn't sang or danced in years at this point. Found a different career all together, so this audition meant nothing to me. I enjoyed being there watching folks audition. I was able to cheer on my friend. I really enjoyed the tour of the theater also. I had a great time just being there. No nerves of auditioning or anything that could take down my enjoyment Then it was my turn to audition. Since of course I hadn't practiced in years, and even vocally I was out of practice, I didn't try any vocal acrobats. Just relied on my natural voice. Something I rarely did in the past because being a coloratura lyric soprano doesn't mix all that well with Broadway. I always in the past would pull chest voice to get a bigger sound. Here I didn't do that. I just sang in my comfortable, everyday, soprano range. So I sit down with my friend and wait. We assumed we wouldn't get passed on to the next call, so we were making plans what to do in NY. Restaurants, shows etc...but we both made it through to the next round. lol I stayed for the next round because I my friend still wanted me to stay. this time around, because I had nothing else prepared, I just sang a cappella (in general don't do this unless they ask). I enjoyed it. It was really cool to hear my voice ring through the rafters. But I was getting nervous. Not because of "auditioning" but because it was becoming weird and I was getting afraid of the outcome. So I went and spoke to the person who would have been the stage manager and explained to them what I was doing. I also had a newborn daughter and there was NO WAY I could do this even if I was offered a part. She was very nice about it and spoke to the "director". He took my aside and assured me that he understood and wouldn't hold it against my friend, but did ask me to leave the auditorium. So I went out to an outer office (they sent me there) and waiting for my friend. It was a loooonnnnggg wait lol. But the state manager came in and told me I could rejoin my friend. She had made it to the next call yay. She did end up getting the part! yay. Me, I was sent the form rejection letter with a note scribbled on it. Had I been actually interested, they would have cast me in the part. They needed an angelic voice. I was there perfect fit and they were disappointed that I backed out. They offered me the chance to come back if I changed my mind. I didn't. I did write them back thanking them for the experience and telling them how much I enjoyed it all, but my life had taken a different turn and was happy as I was. My point is, if performing is your love, you will need to get used to rejection. It will happen to you over and over again. Also nerves are your worst enemy. Lastly when you're rejected don't take it personally. Most of the time their looking for a specific sound to fit their internal view of a character. Just remember, as Brooke said, don't let failure stop you. Just keeping trying...you will get there. :)

With the exception of the calculus score, which was a stretch test given that your coursework did not prepare you, the other fails were about personal activities that would only round out a candidate (at best), not result in a negative admissions decision. Now I know why you were a Stanford admit, overachievers by their nature see bumps in the road as catastrophic events. I think if you compare notes with your peers, the difference between perceived and real setbacks would become more apparent. But to be fair, everything was magnified when you were in the 15-17 age group.

In other words it would have no impact on college admissions. As for her other “failures” they’re more like “I failed at overachieving” rather than actual failures.

I felt so alone and felt that I couldn’t reach out to anybody for help. I remained stagnant in my life for a while, as I lacked motivation to do anything at all. I lost academic focus and sight of my goals, and I feared that my grades would suffer. Other peoples’ words, despite not being true, hurt. I stayed away from people, deleted my social media accounts, and spent less time at school. Constantly, I had anxiety. I felt that distancing myself was the best option because I had embedded into my mind the idea that our generation needs social company to thrive. The year closed and I switched schools because I soon learned that only I could be the narrator to my narrative. I decided that I was going to show that I could grow despite having my roots pulled from the ground by everyone else. Gradually, my grades improved and I was happy. I ran for ASB President and was thriving in Tennis. I told myself, “I shall let my heart be broken, but never by the same hand twice.”

Dlorenzo13 this reads like a supplement omg!
There is a lot of details missing. There is more.

Defusionx Is boo it’s a whole 13 reasons why type of story. It used to make me cry. It made me develop anxiety and fear. I’ll try to type something up tonight if I can and if it will let me post it here.
Very inspirational! I usually get weighed down by other people’s harsh words and take them too personally - I guess that’s a fatal flaw we both have. I’m glad you were able to make the right decisions for yourself and pull through the hard times. Kudos!
