Top colleges that are really good but not T10 status and have low yield (like Vanderbilt, Tufts, Case Western, etc) might reject really stellar applicants because they know that they probably just gonna turn them down for HYPSM or other better colleges. They do this to protect their yield (the amount of students that accept admission offers) and keep it higher.
Even top colleges like Princeton do that. A friend of mine told me that Daniel Zhu (who got 5th at IPhO in 2018 and 1st at IMO 2019) and Benjamin Qi (1st in IOI 2018 & 2019) both got rejected because Princeton figured they'd choose MIT instead since people who do olympiads tend to go there lol
We need a different word than "better" to compare colleges. Harvard isn't "better" than Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt is not better than, say, Syracuse. There is just a difference in selectivity, which has become too meaningful to too many people. Perhaps if we got ourselves out of this mindset we would have kids who are more grounded and less stressed out.
My friend who applied to Rochester last year wasn't exactly on a guaranteed transfer program, but something similar. They waitlisted him and they said if he doesn't get in in the fall, then he will be taken in the spring. But they didn't take him at the end
After completing military service I attended a community college in California. Transferred to UC Berkeley , received BS, and then received PhD from Cambridge University in UK. Transfer programs do work for students from working families.

If you want to get into notre dame easily, holy cross college has an acceptance rate of 94 percent and a guaranteed transfer to notre dame if you maintain a 3.5 gpa or above. A buddy of mine is doing just that

Just because a university accepts all the courses from a community college does not mean those courses apply toward a degree. Just reviewed the resume today of a kid applying for a summer internship. Two years in a CC and already three years in university with a year and a half to go. Good grades, good GPA, good transcripts. No failed classes, no drops. But 2 1/2 years of classes that don't apply to her degree.
ANY matriculated courses are applied towards your MAP....typically you are limited to 70 credits applying to a degree but most only require 125 or less......depending on course load you can easily take 30 semester credits a year with 12/semester considered to be a full time student

The schools that have closed have been small regional colleges that have puny endowments and declining enrollment. Most national liberal arts colleges are fine, yet every so often (and this has been happening since the early 60s), someone makes the ubiquitous "liberal arts colleges are about to become extinct" comment. Yawn.
I think there are too many small private schools and not enough demand. The great small private schools like Amherst and Wesleyan are here to stay because they have a reputation and have value. Other small schools don’t have reputation or don’t have a great as value and their endowments are very small due to that so they lose applicants. Ex: Mount Ida and Wheelock
A lot of them have been for-profit schools. I honestly have no sympathy for the investors or administrators of such institutions. I have a little more sympathy for faculty, because the tenure vs adjunct situation is such a racket, I can see how some professors are driven to take jobs in those places. The ones I'm truly sad for are the students, who are disproportionately low income and low income minority. Those kids are just screwed when their for-profit schools shut down.

I work in admissions for a public university and these concepts do not apply. As a public university in a tri-state area we attempt to grow our admit and transfer rate, not limit the admit rate to look more esteemed. We look at gpa and hs requirements. SAT is only for certain majors like computer science, pre med, mathematics. No disciplinary issues as well, or at least not major and not dismissed from another institution. So maybe this is true for a private institution, but relax folks, schools NEED applicants. It always comes down to can you afford to go to the school of your choice.
My extracurriculars aren't that amazing tbh. They all focus around art (mostly), like I've been in school exhibits, festivals, an online exhibition. I got a city award in 8th grade. I also used to have 1k followers on an amino where I'd post art and take requests. Now I own an art shop (hopefully it'll do better) & an art tiktok. I also enter contests & I'm entering the scholastic art awards. Aside from that, I am in NHS (not impressive, I know) and I used to do key club. Idk, I'm just so nervous abt my extracurriculars. I was supposed to do more interesting things this summer but covid happened.
Center your essay(s) on how how enthused you are about art. How your art will benefit from your education. How you use art to explore ideas and communicate with people. Include a few prints with your apps. They want to see some passion! Art seems like a passion for you.

I have another secret. Forget the zip code, forget the test score, forget the high school, as proxies for ability to pay the full bill. Look at interns. the way it works is that parents mutually back scratch and arrange the internship of their group of kids. The ones who have the heft to set up internships can pay full freight for their own kids. Until I watched this video I just thought that colleges were easily duped about the inherent value of having done an internship. But if you think of it as a proxy, it makes a lot more sense.
Unfortunately, I have been getting so many college videos in my recommended that I am basically an expert. Your SAT score and GPA, while important, do not guarantee you admission and are only two of many factors that go into it. How many AP classes did you take? What extra-curriculars did you participate in? Was your application impressive, well written, AND human (like a 17 or 18, genuine person wrote it)? Are your majors competitive? Are the schools you applied to competitive? Honestly, although I believe the college admission system should be better, there are a lot of factors that go into it that you should recognize that don’t just involve your scores.

Assuming it's need based, yes, you can attempt to negotiate your aid even with a competitive state school. However, your case is much stronger if the school offering you a better deal is as competitive as or more competitive than the school you're trying to negotiate with. The worst answer you will get is "no." It's not as if kids who ask for more aid get anything taken away.

Education is a business - many elite schools have large endowments (which are not taxed). Higher education is ripe for 'disruption' - the curriculum for many programs (especially computer science, business. anlytics) are not on par with what is happening in the market - the pandemic will likely weed out certain colleges and the elite will survive but they must be nimble and be able to adjust to a rapidly changing world...

Lesser known Schools are what top students from Ghana or Nigeria should aim what because the chances of admission are far higher than the usual average out there. USC is a crazy school to avoid because one will not really make out there.

depends on the courses you have on your transcript...if no post HS you need HS transcripts and normally an ACT or SAT although some colleges are doing away with the entrance tests now
Correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard some universities like Tufts(this is just hearsay) will deny superstar applicants because they know they're going to Stanford or MIT or an Ivy to protect their yield.

Genetically superior parents are likely to have smart kids who can get good SAT/ACT scores while being lazy/distracted in high school. Genetically superior parents are likely to have higher incomes.
Getting a great high school GPA requires a student to work hard consistently for years; you probably can't buy your way into it. By contrast, wealthy students can afford expensive SAT prep which puts them at a major advantage over their peers. Some students who do poorly in school can do well on the SAT with the right resources
@@jakebeardsley4935 Prepping for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams also requires a lot of hard work. For example, you need at least a year of steady work at mastering vocabulary. And you should being taking and studying at least six SAT tests.
Because they need a FAFSA form to know income, and because many are technically "need blind" so they're not allowed to look technically. But this is a way (sort of) around that.
bc tests are deliberately written to give wealthier kids better scores. also, the tests and test prep can be very expensive so if you submit six high scores they'll assume you've got money

Hey, I got into UPenn ED for class of 2024. Honestly, besides the typical high scores and gpa, you have to show them that you are interested in their school and the classes they offer. The best way, I think, is to do this in your supplemental essays. Research the classes for the major you want to go into and explain why you want to take those classes in your supplementals. It is definitely more difficult to get in as an Asian American (I am Asian myself) but just try your best!

It's most typical behavior, I find, of schools ranked about 10-100 on any given rankings list. Schools with higher ranks typically don't need to play so many games (besides ED or REA).

That’s really unfortunate to hear colleges play the test score game to guess your family’s wealth. They also use your location (address, HS profile, etc) to assume things about your ability to pay too. So should we not write about financial hardships?
Higher learning is a commodity and each student should pay the same unless they are extraordinarily good at sports and will generate 💵 for the school or are scholars. Financial circumstances and/or race should play not part in the admissions process. Rich 🤑 kids shouldn’t be subsidizing another’s education and basically handing someone else the golden key 🔑 to compete in the job marketplace with them.

you did phenomenal Jen, do not let this get to you. This is just life, but you have to keep on prospering, and understand that everything happens for a reason. You will go to a school that you will do extraordinary in, I guarantee it!

1520/35 ACT should get you into Brown, UPenn, Columbia or MIT. Why worry about UMich??
Lesser known Schools are what top students from Ghana or Nigeria should aim what because the chances of admission are far higher than the usual average out there.

depends on the courses you have on your transcript...if no post HS you need HS transcripts and normally an ACT or SAT although some colleges are doing away with the entrance tests now

Nice question, was thinking of the same. I am also sometimes worried about the financial aid part. But, I watched a TH-cam video by an MIT admissions officer who said that the percentage of Int'l students who get in is always fixed(most 9-11%) so that the school can sufficiently cover for their financial needs

Why do higher test scores and lower GPA's indicate that a student might be wealthy?
Genetically superior parents are likely to have smart kids who can get good SAT/ACT scores while being lazy/distracted in high school. Genetically superior parents are likely to have higher incomes.
Getting a great high school GPA requires a student to work hard consistently for years; you probably can't buy your way into it. By contrast, wealthy students can afford expensive SAT prep which puts them at a major advantage over their peers. Some students who do poorly in school can do well on the SAT with the right resources
@@jakebeardsley4935 Prepping for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams also requires a lot of hard work. For example, you need at least a year of steady work at mastering vocabulary. And you should being taking and studying at least six SAT tests.
Why do they use our test scores for gauges of wealth and not just use income?
Because they need a FAFSA form to know income, and because many are technically "need blind" so they're not allowed to look technically. But this is a way (sort of) around that.
bc tests are deliberately written to give wealthier kids better scores. also, the tests and test prep can be very expensive so if you submit six high scores they'll assume you've got money

Hey, I got into UPenn ED for class of 2024. Honestly, besides the typical high scores and gpa, you have to show them that you are interested in their school and the classes they offer. The best way, I think, is to do this in your supplemental essays. Research the classes for the major you want to go into and explain why you want to take those classes in your supplementals. It is definitely more difficult to get in as an Asian American (I am Asian myself) but just try your best!

Sabrina Salam Cornell is an Ivy League, so, yes.
It's most typical behavior, I find, of schools ranked about 10-100 on any given rankings list. Schools with higher ranks typically don't need to play so many games (besides ED or REA).

Hi, is it true that Universities view all scores upwards of 1550 on the SAT equally due to understanding small mistakes, or is this misinformation? My sister told me about this but just wanted to make sure!
That’s really unfortunate to hear colleges play the test score game to guess your family’s wealth. They also use your location (address, HS profile, etc) to assume things about your ability to pay too. So should we not write about financial hardships?

The book "Bad Biz: Your Guide to Starting a For Profit College" by Corin Devaso is an interesting read. It's satire that shows how some colleges scam.
Higher learning is a commodity and each student should pay the same unless they are extraordinarily good at sports and will generate 💵 for the school or are scholars. Financial circumstances and/or race should play not part in the admissions process. Rich 🤑 kids shouldn’t be subsidizing another’s education and basically handing someone else the golden key 🔑 to compete in the job marketplace with them.
