    My wife still has her 2007 Volvo S-40, she always wanted a Volvo. Ordered in Italy (I was in the military) built in Sweden, picked up in Denver, the only car we've driven from California to Florida. We chose that year due to Volvo being 50 years old so the accessories were 50% off. Passion Red, like this car, manual shift, all the goodies for accessories at the time and all for $23,999.00 thanks to military sales overseas. It's 16+ years old and still looks new due to always being garaged & still driven a few times a week.

      My mom still has her 2008 S40 that she bought new. Just passed 250k kilometers this spring. This week it's being treated to a rust repair and full repaint. Can't wait to see the finished product.

      @@EricFortuneJr. It's at 192,000+ as we have slowed down driving it since buying a new car. But the mechanic who works on Volvo said the way we take care of it, we won't have to worry about rebuilding the engine.

      Actually, the smaller Volvos, ( C30, V50 and 2nd gen S40 ) starting in 2003, were made in Gent Belgium, whilst the bigger Volvos, S60, V70, S80 and XC90, were made in Sweden.
      Before 2003, the smaller Volvos like the Daf 66 badge swapped Volvo 66, Volvo bought into DAF in the 70:s, Volvo 340 \ 360 , Volvo 480, 440 and 460:s were made in the Netherlands, and so was the first gen S40 and V40, which was designed in a joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi, and was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma, and built in the same factory, and for the first time, a Dutch made Volvo was a serious contender .
      After Ford bought Volvo in 1999, a new deal was made, and the 2003 S40 and V50, and also C30 were based on the first gen Ford Focus C-Max and Mazda 3 and built in Gent Belgium

    I had an '05 Titanium Grey/Nordkap leather S60R that I loved! Modded it with full TME exhaust, TME springs, Bell FMIC, tune, larger turbo inlet pipe, and water injection. What a fun car! I've always wanted one of these I5 turbo volvos, IMO one of the best sounding cars on the road. I heard one downtown with some sort of fancy looking loud exhaust and it sounded straight up like the quattro rally car. This with a 6 speed seems like it'd be so much fun.

    Not to be contrarian (Volvos aren't even usually my style), but I honestly think this car's styling aged waaaay better than a lot of its contemporaries. Thinking about other mid-size luxury cars of the time. 2000-2004ish was a low point for the Germans in this category, the E90 3-series, W203 C-Class and B6 Audi A4 were all dreadfully dull to look at.

  • @soundseeker63
    @soundseeker63 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There's definitely something about the subtle but throaty warbling sound of those old Volvo 5-cyl engines that gets you. A kind of mechanical character that modern cars miss. These engines also made it into an entirely different car - The mk2 Ford Focus RS! They are tunable engines that can take the miles too.

    Does the S60 R have same awful battleship-like turning radius of regular S60? I have driven my friends S60 and it is good car for straight, long roads. Stable on road and corners, plenty of acceleration even in basic incarnation. Great fuel economy if driven carefully. The seats are comfortable but too hard for my taste. Cons are the turning radius, lack of standart DIN audio system, gear shifter is precise but lacks physical feeling to it.

    When I was in college, my 97 850 GLT was backed into and was totaled. I test drove a 2004 S60 R. It was blue which looked beautiful. My only issue was that when I sat in it, it felt almost the exact same as my 850. The leather was worn in the same ways and it didn’t feel like a modern car. It drove well but I ended up going with a 2006 Acura TL. Though the TL wasn’t as heavy of a performer, it looked great and felt very modern. The deciding factor was remembering how much it was to maintain my Volvo. Anything and everything was more expensive in that car. I’ll always have a soft spot for Volvo.

    In 2010 my brother bought one of these used from the local Volvo dealership. That same year I bought a used 99 Camaro SS. He used to make fun of my "trailer park muscle car." Over the next 4 yrs he dumped about $6k into this car for repairs. He ended up trading it in bc it was so unreliable & so expensive to repair. Meanwhile I still own my 99 Camaro SS. The only things that have broken/failed in the last 13 yrs are the windshield wiper motor, the alternator, & the original factory clutch. My car has almost 200k mi. My brother's Volvo didn't even have 100k. Moral of the story...get a Camaro. It'll be a lot more reliable & way cheaper to repair.

      Only problem is I had a 02 SS Camaro and it was fun, But I began to notice that people would point and laugh and make fun of me while I was out driving it. Loved the car but it just didn't fit my mindset. Now if I went out and bought a mullet wig to put on then it might have been more fun. The Volvo is a much better car in the end.
