    This channel just delivers one demystification after another to me. Those sounds that I knew well, but wouldnt be able to replicate, it turns out actually follow a simple logic, e.g. the fith/forth in the right hand and fixed chords in the left. So cool, thaaaanks

    Who wudda thunk? Adding a Major 7 with a Dominant 7 chord would sound so good....my ear could never pick that up! Oscar Peterson! What a genius player, with enormous hands!!

    Adam, I grew up at 91 Stoneyside in Olivette, near Old Bonhomme. I'm crudding myself to think that such jazz resources now exist in my home town. When I was there I was the only jazz person for miles around. I'm studying piano and you are amaaaazing!

    I loved this quick lesson: your clear explanation step-by-step, breaking down how the voicings are built (e.g., a perfect fifth then a fourth, or showing the major second interval in the middle of the spread, etc. -- makes it easy to remember how to do it). I appreciate that you allow time to practice with you in the lesson, and then you play a bass line to back us up -- and the free PDF that includes the exercises! Very valuable. Crunchy is my favorite texture! Thanks!

    Awesome content! As an extension of the Red’s Spread, you can also add the 4th in addition to the 5th. A little more crunch, but really cool in the right setting. Also for any of these, when any of the notes are on a white note it’s fun to slide off of the black note right below it

    The Red Spread with those clashes in the right hand almost works in the same way as how it somehow works in contemporary gospel music to have the choir singing harmonies mainly based on inversions of the major 1 and the minor 2, despite the band playing all sorts of reharmonisations underneath 😃
    Once the tension and release works well, anything is possible 😉👍

    This is fantastic. I've been reviewing your two courses "Block Chords" and "Magic Voicings" for months and months to get them to flow effortlessly from my fingers. (Definitely still a work in process). . These spread voicings will be added to my practice routines ASAP. Thanks!

    Hello!!! I would like to know the difference between Block Spreads (the level 2) and Upper Structures!!! Congrats from Brazil!!!

    • @fondtrout6354
      @fondtrout6354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think when Adam says, “it doesn’t matter how you fill in the octaves as long as you’re diatonic to the harmony” on level 2, that’s a clue. The upper structure triads are useful as a method of accessing complex harmony with a simple frame of mind - “triad built on the ii = Lydian dominant,” or “triad built on the bvi = altered.” The block spread technique is more about producing that “big” sound and you’re probably going to be moving notes around a lot to make a melody with the “big” sound, so it’s not critical to define exactly which structures you have inside the octave. You want as few steps in your mental process as possible when utilizing these techniques so that you can execute without hesitation.

    For hitting all major 9ths (in the level3 one) diatonically. Use a pentatonic "shape" for either top or bottom. F.e bottom note Dminor-pentatonic (top note will automatically follow Eminor-penta or viceversa) over Dm7(dorian). Just using these two notes on its own gives a kind of strange "modern" sound (i like it for guitar).

    What does crunchy mean?

    • @jarrod8579
      @jarrod8579 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Usually means a lot of dissonance, especially with 2 or more notes right next to each other.

  • @billgrabbe9992
    @billgrabbe9992 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you using an upright piano sound? It seems like the thicker voicings sit better with the understated piano tone. Having big overtones fighting with big chord dissonances might be too much here. My takeaway - the character of your instrument is a meaningful context that should influence your choices.

  • @Zoco101

    I'm really enjoying this. Am staying up late to watch it. Might try some on the piano tomorrow. It's a well constructed lesson and screen format.
    I notice that the piano is slightly behind the metronome. Is that to make it swing more, or is it a latency issue?
