I didn't know smelling salts still existed. My suspicions about this novel are once again confirmed.

I spent a lot of my childhood at Lake Burrinjuck, she said The Lake flowed into The Murrumbidgee River, it doesn't. It flows in the other direction. Had to dnf, it's not that hard to find out the direction a river flows. It certainly stopped my reading flow. So I took my "posse" of Kangaroos and picked up another book. Too many other great books to read to spend time on one that wasn't working out too well.

You're killing me with the smelling salts. 😅 I needed this right now. 🤣 I did like the places the family members end up. I am from Argentina and I did enjoy the Borges cameo, but give me more. Thanks for your review and the laughs.

I think something I found difficult here was the author being too close to the story, especially also being present in the story- I think it tied her hands in terms of ‘having’ to include certain characters/family members, and she couldn’t go too off-script.
Also, you huffing smelling salts had me cackling 😂

I couldn't work out where all these people came from, how did Francois meet Barbara? Where did these children come from? How much money they must have had to travel all over the world at a time when a three day drive to Queensland was considered the apex of a travel holiday? I did like Denise, though, she was salty enough to interest me. But otherwise, no.

Parts of this book actually took place in Algeria, but I never got even a sliver of knowledge or understanding of the country, meanwhile My Friends never had the main characters get back to Libya, yet it really had a sense of place. This book never gave you a sense of place of any of all the places it bounced around so much.
Also, that last sentence of the author’s note left me confused, what did all those Jews being slaughtered have anything to do with this novel???? Is that a preview of what she’s writing next? It was such an odd note to end on.

Yeah, I thought I’d missed something when I read that end part! It really felt like it came out of nowhere.
