i personally have an SMP, which it's main whole thing is just to have fun playing with my friends. and whatever happens happens. i wish more SMPs were less copy pastes and more original ideas. all these clone smps just muddy the waters and make it hard to find truly good smps.

  • @CaptainPineapple

This is a really interesting video! I do wonder how the opinions may shift as you look more towards smaller creators and stuff and definitely some of the reasoning behind those views.
Like for me when I heard the question asking if it's hard to find unique SMPs, my reasoning for saying yes was more about how a lot of smaller creators (so people in my general area) are very scared to try new things or just generally don't have the ability to make them a reality because smaller creators tend to have less time or expendable resources to put into it. I also think there's a lot of difficulty finding people for an SMP as I've seen behind the scenes of working on smaller SMPs, your biggest issue is finding people with the right personality to not be "problematic" as the best word I can think of.
We've had to remove several people from SMPs for being fairly toxic behind the scenes and stuff or generally having the wrong mindset for what the SMP is about because they see all the massive spectacle creators doing well and want to bring that into a server designed to be a lot more calm. I think if you looked at SMPs with more popular creators, you wouldn't get that because to put it simply, the type of people you don't want on your SMP have been "filtered out" by the TH-cam audience. We have to do extensive checks on some creators to make sure they absolutely are not a bad person or the wrong fit for an SMP because there's no way to know what their personality may be outside of their content. However when it comes to larger channels, I think it's easier to find the right fit for a server because the people that don't have that personality that works well simply don't make it to that popularity.
That was a very long comment to say I'd be interested to see the opinions vary between different creator sizes and stuff.

time to go a little bit ham in the comments because there's one question i have a lot of feelings on -- specifically, i feel like "SMPs are a lot more fun when lore is involved" is a really interesting question and a little bit loaded, mostly because the definition of "lore" within the MCYT space is so broad as to include basically anything narrative:
    - "my build is inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and i think a wizard would live in it"
    - "i'm making a gigantic creative mode build based on the novel i'm writing"
    - "i had to cheat in items because a recipe was broken and i want an interesting way to justify that in the video"
    - "here's some story framing to make backend admin stuff look more unique"
    - "i have a funny bit/interesting challenge in mind and now that's seen as part of my character"
    - "i made a cool skin themed around this biome i think is neat"
    - "i have written a cohesive backstory for this specific character for an intensely story-focused SMP"
    - "there's a competition and i want to draw up a plan for my team to win it"
    - "i keep running into one very specific type of thing, despite the fact that it's supposed to be rare"
    - "i thought it'd be fun to just start up a stream and improvise a villain monologue because i'm bored"
    - "people like drama so i'm going to ham up a fake grudge between me and the friend that punched me off a cliff on impulse"
when you get right down to it, the second you sit down in front of a computer and start making a Minecraft video, you're telling a story and building a narrative. even if you're in singleplayer, even if you despise the word _lore,_ even if you're just making bottom-feeder clickbait content... the framing of the video, the way you choose to say things, and the things you choose to leave in or leave out all contribute to an overall narrative -- and again, Narrative and Lore are often treated as the same thing in the SMP space -- so you can't really put a group of people in the same room and expect there _not_ to be some kind of story.
so, are SMPs "more fun when lore is involved?" probably not in terms of more rigidly-defined "your character is this and they do this" or "the story of the world is this because of these things" lore, but... given the definition of "lore" to mean just about anything narrative, they kind of _have_ to be. ultimately, Minecraft is a sandbox game -- and if you take out everything falling under the broad category of Lore, all you're left with is an extremely janky 3D modeling program.

    • @leoshi8756
      @leoshi8756 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I so agree with this. Lore is fun in small dosages. Crafting little naratives such as a cute fairy cottage, mermaid palaces, wizard towers etc. I love inventing smaller stories and more compact lore. But something I never really enjoy was such overarching lore, where every action is preplanned and its a story. I write creative fiction, it's not that I don't like a story, but a point of SMPs is to go on a minecraft server and just talk and have fun with your friends, and I really don't think that achievable with every single preplanned action because its not a movie but it feels just like minecraft. I think an SMP that really did well in blending it was Witchcraft SMP and a bigger one would be Hermitcraft SMP. Of course, witchcraft was almost entiremly crafted from lores, but I don't think anyone knew going in who was going to actually win, but rather just wanted to work together to build narative as it goes and explore the magic of the world.

Personally as an SMP content creator, I’ve owned many SMPs but only streamed on a couple. I come from the bedrock SMP space, everyone’s much nicer on this side of the community in my opinion! The java side, which I’ve also been part of, was harsh to me and many people due to the DreamSMP and stuff like that.
Long story short go with what SMP you love and stick to it, create your own and whatnot! But hey, what am I saying? I come from twitch lmao.
