My first attempt at uploading a TH-cam video. Hope it helps.
On a Pentax camera, you can link the green button to DOF, then you can press it at any time to see how the actual aperture looks through the viewfinder.
@16:27 maybe I'm blind, but the focus with the old focusing screen is way better.
I think this is probably a combination of 2 things, first shooting through the viewfinder is not the easiest so if the focus on the 2nd camera is off a little, the result will look off. Secondly, I may have actually not had good focus on nail to begin with using the new screen. The purpose, however, was to show how the foreground and background portions are much more blurrier with the new screen. I can assure you, there is a world of difference when using the new screen vs the old.
When using Live View the mirror is flipped up and the sensor itself is used to create the image on the LCD so no the focus screen is not seen in Live View. I've been completely satisfied with the screen. It has made a world of difference for me. I do find that it tends to attract dust easily but a quick blow with a blower and it is usually pretty clear. When I replace my body, I'll probably reorder the same screen.
Need to get myself one of these, not only does my eyesight suck, but my camera has some back and front focusing issues for some AF lenses, and I'm planning to get into macro photography, which requires focus to be dead on.
im new to this but to me the old screen looks better ? am i wrong
Actually the new screen is better, is focusing mainly on the nail and not any thing else.
This is not a split prism screen but a Canon S Type which makes the out of focus areas much more blurry. I decided to go with a S Type as the split prism doesn't work when you're trying to focus on something not in the center of the frame. If you used the focus and recompose method, you can actually still be off on the focus when you recompose since the focus plane is now in a different location. i think i will stay with stock screen, order some magnifier loupe for my k-r and will see :)

You are suppose to put both finger cots on the same hand . Didn't you notice you had to touch the screen with your bare finger ?
I noticed this after the fact...in hindsight it would have been better to use a set of gloves rather than the finger cots provided... but that was 7 years ago... I've learned a lot since then.
@Andrew - thanks for sharing. Good reflection on pros and cons - and the installation itself. A little more time have passed, since you made the switch. Any additional thoughts on the effect on your ability to focus manually (I almost exclusively own manual lenses, that I use with my 5D3) Also, does it show when using Live View?

What is brand of new focusing screen on the video? Stock screen looks like much better.
The screen is a Canon S screen from focusingscreen.com. The new screen is certainly better to the eye then the video shows. Remember I had to use another point and shoot camera (Canon S90) to shoot through the viewfinder of the K-r. If the focus on the S90 was off a little, it would affect the results. I think the point, though, was to show at wider apertures, out of focus areas are much more out of focus than the stock screen.
I wish I had the nerve to do this. They say it is very easy to scratch the focussing screen. All I would want to do here is drop the stock screen down and clean it and reinstall it. Thanks for the tutorial though !
+Michael Piziak I would suggest, never removing the focusing screen to clean it, as mentioned in the video, you should only ever use a small bulb blower.. Definitely never use a cloth, liquid or compressed air
Removing it, will just mean, you will most likely get dust on the back as well as that which may be on the front.. Go with a small bulb blower and leave the screen in place.... If you screen is that dirty, that a blower cannot remove the dirt, I'd have it replaced by a professional, preferably with a Pentax screen, not a third party cheap piece of plastic.

Tweezers is what they called it I believe. They came with the new focus screen when I bought it.
