Mine is actually Nami vs Khalifa. But then I read the manga. I was very impressed with Nami to be honest. She's not a fighter and now she's fighting an agent of CP9 with a devil's fruit power. A big step up. And her perfected climact tact enabled her to conjure 4 more illusions of her, AMAZING. Reminded me of a Baldur's Gate spell, Mirror Image.
I am really happy with the direction of Nami. In D&D, with her elemental staff, she would be a wizard or sorceror. But in One Piece, she relies on science instead.

I loved the moment after Kaku's defeat where it seems like he really enjoyed his time as a shipwright in Water 7, but laments that he's in too deep as a goverment assasin for him to do anything else. I'm not sure if you're reading the cover stories but the one about CP9 reveals that the agents are pretty much trained since childhood.

I hard disagree with the take on nami vs kalifa. I feel that nami was given a fight at least as good as alabasta. Nami was given a chance to fight a superhuman with a power not shown to her before she started leading to her thinking a way to nullify the power and using her weather skills from navigating in a fight which allowed nami to get a power up that feels unique to her.
Also I assume the lightning was lightning fast or at least too fast to react to especially as a trap like it was used with the speed more being a pacing issues then reality but that may just be a failure in my personal understanding.
I'm not trying to be like "your wrong and I'm right" as I see enjoyment of a fight as close to subjective you can get but Just want to explain why someone would like the the fight without betting off while watching since you seem to have seen a fight that had no redeeming qualities where I saw a fight were nami was actively setting up her win by thinking ahead and her intelligence being rewarded.
Btw my favorite not luffy fight was Franky vs Fukuro because of how Franky's powers we've been show and how well he used them plus some Franky Superness. Ironically given my post nami vs Kalifa is my 2nd least favorite but I still liked it. I feel choppers moment was cool but his fight with kumadori was a one sided beating until chopper just won. Again I like monster point as a moment not a fight.
    Sorry for the long post.

oh yeah Spandam as a villain works, espcially because his serious moments are offset by everyone taking their chances to dunk on him and his general incompetence despite being the big bad of the arc
and yeah he's used as a vehicle to show just how bad the world government are and what a threat they are beyond random marines who hadn't been that important beyond Smoker up to this point

A extra point on names, Robin also start using the nickname that Luffy gives to people going foward, which is kinda cute.

3:52 And thankfully this is the only time in the story we get an explicit numerical value to a characters strength ( bounties are not based on strenght , they're based on the perceived threat to the WG ) since Oda knew that if he kept it up it would ruin most of the inteigue behind more nunced match ups since it would become "whose numbers are bigger" instead of "could this character beat this character based on their abilities & skills ?"

When you mentioned last video which my favorite character was... if it wasn't the cheap answer of Franky (As the new crew member he naturally has the most depth) it's Spandam. Easily my most favorite villain. He is so dang horrible in every way that it's in its own way quite compelling, and as you said, a real look at how truly sinister the World Government was being revealed to be.. and seeing the Straw Hats break him mentally and then Robin break him physically is satisfying beyond words.
Oh, and "I want to live".. yeah I watched the whole thing.

I don't understand how you can continue to say sanji has had no development while simultaneously highlighting each moment of character he has throughout the story so far. He shows his compassionate, thoughtful nature in every arc. He's usually the one who both physically and emotionally steps outside of what is going on to help free his crewmates from whatever stress they're going through. In little garden and Alabasta he helps them with his side missions. In Alabasta he takes over Usopp's fight and gets his goggles back. In Skypiea he sacrifices himself so that Usopp cam save Nami. In W7 he dedicates all his time to investigate Robin's disappearance on his own and is ultimately the one who finds her, taking on most of cipher pol on his own. In Enies he shows his weakness but uses that moment to help inspire Usopp to realize that no one is strong all the time, that in fact, they all have their strengths and weaknesses and that usopp should focus on helping where only he can help. I know at this point, this is an old video and so you've seen Sanji's backstory, but Sanji is definitely the most well developed character in the series from day one (other than Luffy)

About sanjis diable jambe, you already got the wanze explanation in the comments but you'll get a more concrete explanation in the wano arc. It was something that couldn't be explained before that. Its currently being explained in the latest chapters that are coming out now and same with zoro's ashura. It seems that's setup to get a explanation as well. Both couldn't be explained before this point because other things needed to be setup in the world building and the power system for the explanation to make sense.

The fan service stuff only gets worse and worse because it serves as filler for Toei. Unfortunately as pacing gets worse, the fan service does, too, which leads to the Anime really not doing justice to the manga or the story in general.

the thing with robin's story is shes based off spies from russia who were used by the government then branded as harmful due to info they knew and betrayed....so i like how at her age after all shes been through she might get emotional and be in pain for momentary situations but she does act strong and firm normally despite it all and getting hurt on the outside is nothing like the internal emotional abuse she has felt her whole life.....she still can act calm and collected despite that....it shows a true strength most would not have in her situation as a female at least....some males have that level of strength but females less so so props to her....she is level headed showing her book reading paid off making her that way...thinking of plans to get out if situations rather than being an emotional mess...

I didn't know what fan-service meant until people keep pointing it out. As a woman, it doesn't bother me at all. Putting that aside, I really enjoyed Nami and Ussop's fights. It's so fun seeing them put their brainpower into use and outsmart their opponents.
Now Sanji is a combination of intellect and brawn, it's sometimes disappointing when he gets paired to clown opponents😅, but his fighting style is so cool and sexy nonetheless.

  • @cognitivedissonance9938
    @cognitivedissonance9938 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Happy you enjoyed the arc, it's a classic!
I am sure you have heard this before, but I would recommend you soon switch over to the manga. It's not only the pacing, but a lot of the problems you seem to have are smaller in the manga. The over-sexualization of the female characters will continue, but to a much, much lesser degree in the manga. As an example, the Robin/Spandam abuse was on a whole other level in the anime and it was not necessary.
A lot of the moments also hit better when you yourself can decide the tone and voice of certain lines. You lose something without the music and the good voice actors, but I think it is worth it.
It is not that One Piece does not have faults. It's just really annoying that the anime decides to make them worse.

Gotta disagree about the Nami fight to some extent, I think your enjoyment of it is severely hampered by you only seeing it as fan service leading to not really looking at it seriously. Maybe it's because I'm already a massive pervert, or because I come from a culture where nudity is less stigmatised but I wasn't very bothered by the supposed sexualization in the fight. Nor do I pay that much attention as soon as a female character loses a garment. Seriously that part against kumadori was more a display of quick thinking by Nami and only seeing it as fan service is the bigger issue here IMO.
The fight against Kalifa is a display of how Nami fights, it shows her intellect and her incredible skills understanding and sensing even the smallest climate conditions. It's also a great way to have a character who really isn't a fighter and arguably the physically weakest of the crew fight against someone who she really shouldn't be able to beat. By having Kalifa be new to her devil fruit powers, and already coming off the high of beating Sanji without much issue she's already set up to be overconfident in her skills and not willing to take Nami seriously so she decides to use the fight to train in using her devil fruit, that she just got mind you.
Also was your main issue the fact that this character couldn't dodge lightning from point blank range? Yes the anime showed it in slow motion but it didn't actually travel in slow motion.

  • @sarafontanini7051

the thing that offsets SPandam the most as a viallin is that NOONE likes him, even his own minions only work for him ebcause they HAVE to while they hate his fucking guts, AND there's also the fact that Spandam between being a mosnter of a human is treated like comic relief. Oda makes sure that when a character is THE WORST he doesn't just punishes them, he HUMILIATES them and removes all dignity they could have and make them jokes as punishment for their villainy.
But that's just my interpretation of things.

      @ShutUpDenny  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree, it's not a mark against the characters because it's a decision made by the writer. I don't care about characters being hot, or showing skin or whatever, my issue was more so that this is done for no reason other than for people who make bizarre comments like the one above mine to get a slight chub while watching rather than to progress the story or develop the characters. It just felt out of place in this story and felt like instead of giving Nami a serious battle like everyone else they decided it would be better to have her get sudsy with a lady. Personally I think this fight would've worked better if Kefla was acting the exact same way but Sanji had to deal with her being sexy, that would actually be a real problem for him. Unfortunately we learn fighting a woman is entirely out of character for him in this arc so that couldn't happen, but I'm just saying I have no problem with it in theory if it serves the character and narrative and I simply felt like this instance with Nami did not.

I'd think Zoro's asura technique would be most asspullery of them all. Comparing to Luffy's and Sanji's for example, their techniques don't really seem to require any training, instead all they need is to come up with the idea and then do it, so them thinking off screen isn't that unbelievable. Zoro's asura on the otherhand has no explanation at all and is seemingly unrelated to anything we've seen in the series in first place.
I always smile whenever a person complains about the anime adaptation ruining the pacing or adding uncomfortable and pointless"fan service" and ruining jokes etc. Just makes me think "Serves you right." After Alabasta I wouldn't personally recommend the anime adaptation to anybody as a whole. Just not worth it. It either wastes your time, gives you more negative view on the source material, or both. I don't personally see value in that.

Besides even today, asura is still weird.
Sanji: Used friction to heat up hiss leg. Makes sense.
Luffy: Uses his legs as pumps to speed up his blood flow, thus getting oxygen to his muscles faster and thus being able to perform in ways his body is normally able to perform. Makes sense.
Gear 3 uses air that he blows into his bones by first biting through his finger and thus making his limbs giant size. Doesn't make any logical sense, but it's fiction and at least there's SOME logic to it.
Zoro: Manifests illusionary limbs and head seemingly just because he was feeling intensely or something, these illusionary limbs with illusionary swords seem to be able to make physical contact.
Makes no sense! Has no real world logic to it at all, and even in the whole series there is no one else shown to use similar technique. It DEFINITELY feels asspullery.

Plus you miss a lot of Hidden massages and jokes with the dub. :3
