I don’t believe that automation is the problem. The problem is that only a small amount of people will own the machines that do the work, leaving most people without money to even buy what is being made.
Resistance to automation is keeping US ports in the dark ages. Automation leads to better jobs, fewer injuries, and more efficient trade. Yes jobs will change, but fighting that tide will only leave people behind.
most of these companies are foreign owned companies not United States companies that made hundreds of billions of dollars during Covid and now they don’t want to pay the dock workers a small increase in wages, the same workers that got sick and died moving containers on their terminals. They want to try to automate terminals like they do overseas that doesn’t create jobs. It eliminates jobs which eliminates families and other businesses in the area, they have to move away because they can’t afford it anymore in the cities that they grew up in. So company that made $50 billion doesn’t want to pay a couple hundred more million to support these workers is a shame.
Automated terminals reduce the unskilled workforce, that is true. It will never eliminate it. What he failed to mention was that it increases skilled labor. Skilled ILA labor maintain this equipment. Unions need to work harder with this reality and put infrastructure to training skilled workers.
