If I can help... when grammar books mention "duration", it means that the beginning and the end of an action are not precise, known or important. "When Frank Sinatra was a baby", we don't really know when he started and ended being a baby. Also, the action of being a baby was still going on. That's usually what we mean by "duration". As for perfect tenses, the beginning and end of actions are either known, precise or important, and the action has been totally completed. In "Frank Sinatra was a singer", the action is totally completed, and also, we know the beginning and the end (birth and dead). Thanks for your video and your energy!

    Oi Andressa
Eu gosto de você como professora de primária; recordação de infância! ;-)
    Falando a serio:
Fui um ator durante cinco anos, agora sou cantor.
Viajei pela Europa uma vez quando era um ator.
Eu sei o que os meus filhos sentem porque fui eu mesmo uma criança.
Viajei pela Europa três vezes quando era uma criança.
    Einstein era um cientista brilhante.

So, from what you might be saying, for Portuguese, the preterite (simple past) tense refers to what took effect throughout a period of time now in the past; the imperfect tense refers to what happened only during part of a period in the past. Well, in Spanish, preterite refers to whatever “just happened” in the past while imperfect refers to what happened continually or for what was expected to be a lengthy amount of time or when telling time in the past.

      @FalandoNissocomAndressa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

In Portuguese both are called Preterite, one is Perfect and the other is Imperfect. But it seems to me that the definition is similar to Spanish.

Andressa, como explicar frases como "Fui feliz toda a minha vida" ou "Até hoje, fui sempre feliz"? A ação não está concluída porque o sujeito ainda está vivo e porque usar "fui" aqui não invalida que a pessoa ainda seja feliz no momento da fala. Obrigada!!

Frank Sinatra was one of the most famous singers in the 20th century
Frank Sinatra foi um dos cantores mais famosos do século XX.
His life ended completely in the 20th century
Frank Sinatra was a 10-month-old baby when WW was elected as President o the United States
Frank S. era um bebê de 10 meses quando os Estados Unidos elegeram o Presidente WW
Because he did not finish being a 10 month old baby when the President was elected
    more examples:
    minha infancia foi feliz.
    My childhood was happy
Use preterite because my childhood is completely finished.
A minha infancia era(imperfect) feliz quando eu morava(imperfect) no Delaware, mas depois nos mudamos (preterite) para Florida.
My childhood was happy when I lived in Delaware, but after that we moved to Florida.
My childhood wasn't complete when I lived in Delaware but when we moved to Florida the action was complete, so we should use the simple past (preterite)
imperfect first then the preterite (simple past )
    Example
Quando tinha 19 anos Deus me deu o meu namaorado.

This is actually way different than spanish. I understand a LOT of Portuguese and ive been studying. But I just started past. It seems like there are many times that they would be different in Spanish.

Hey there! So sorry for this late reply! To be honest, I know almost nothing about Spanish grammar! But it is interesting to know that the past tense is different, I think Present Tense is more similar, isn't it?

@@FalandoNissocomAndressa Yes. It seems like in Portuguese that the tenses are the opposite than in Spanish. Preterite v Impefect. But not in spelling. Like in how its used.

@@A-ID-A-M the tenses are the same in Spanish. Pretérito perfecto simple (él fue) vs pretérito imperfecto (él era). The use-cases are also the same.
