If available, the book (written in English) THE GREENLANDERS a novel by Jane Smiley, is probably one of the best histories about the Scandinavian colonists in Greenland during the late Middle Ages--early Renaissance Era. What happened was an ecological calamity, that they were unable to have foreseen. They had built up an entire culture that depended upon trade & contact with their European culture. The Black Death, the horrid plague that engulfed Europe, made continued trading & shipping of goods impossible. Nearly 25-40 percent (depending on location) of Europeans died & they were no longer in a position to send help to Greenland. Published 1988.
