  • An intro to my lathe banjo upgrade project. Most of this video is me going over the issues with the stock banjo and change gears, and how i plan to rectify them. The video does contain a few minutes of mill work at the end.

Thanks for this. Your original banjo is a masterpiece of engineering compared to the one that came with my lathe.

Good start, I will follow this one closely, I have the same very special gear banjo in my lathe :)
I like the idea of having multiple banjos - I just thought about ditching the adjustment and just drill fixed hole positions for the axles...

I thought about putting studs directly into the head-stock as well, but I questioned how long the threads would hold up. The cast iron in my lathe, seems pretty brittle.

You're investing a lot of time in a Hazard Fraught (AvE has subverted my entire shop vocabulary) lathe; for someone of your obvious ability I'm hoping you're using it as an inexpensive test bed to prepare for something more worthy of your skills?
I say this because I had to return the first milling machine I bought there when I saw the ceramic from a sparkplug cast into the base. I only buy disposable things there now.

Stefan, I’ve always pictured you more as a cello guy, not banjo.

On my lathe (Myford) there is just a screw and a washer on the end of the studs to hold the gears in place. They don't really have to work hard if the shafts are all parallel. Also there are no spacers between the gears.
That's a great tip about using the magnetic indicator stand as a mill stop.
You get a lovely finish from your shell cutter. I enjoyed watching it nom through the metal so easily. :D

Good idea, especially checking for constant center distances

.....love this project..........sealed bearings would about eliminate the oiling issue....pin the gears to each other.....arm could be made with tighter tolerances that way......

Term for a thin open end wrench is "Tappet Wrench." The original purpose for this wrench was to set the lock nut on an automotive engine valve tappet when adjusting the valve train clearance. There wasn't much room for a standard thickness wrench on a side valve engine to get between the valve spring retainer and the top of the tappet that runs on the camshaft.

      Hi Tony,
At the bottom of each blog post in the project I have a reference section. In the reference section are links to downloadable drawing pdfs.
