    Amazing tone once you add the funnels. I can't believe a hosepipe sounds better than my horn, or at least, better than how I play my horn.

    The point of the hand in a French horn bell isn't to dampen the sound. French horn players put their hand in the bell because French horns are naturally sharp instruments, so putting a hand in it makes it flatter.

    • @ginmany
      @ginmany 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Clogged Cord and also because natural horns could only play arpeggios, and changing the hand position in the bell allowed for a different variety of notes without crooks!

    • @supyoist
      @supyoist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Actually, it IS to dampen the sound. After this became common practice, horn manufacturers deliberately started making their horns tend way sharp to compensate for this technique.

      Message from Martin: A French horn mouthpiece (or trumpet or trombone mouthpiece, depending on the diameter of the hose and the size of your lips) definitely make it sound better. But you can use nothing, or shape a piece of wax to give your lips a cushion (that's what didgeridoo players do). Or a little funnel. Just anything that gives your lips some comfort and room to vibrate.

    In my younger days I worked at a steel fabrication company as a welder. The shop had 20' lengths of copper tubing. Being a brass player, the sight of all that tubing was too much for me. Every so often I would belt out very loud mystery noises when no one was around to watch, making sure no one caught me doing it.

    I'm surprised you've called those stocks when technically they are called pillories.
    Otherwise, the video was top. Such ingenuity with household items. Is there a way to add holes to add more notes or would that not work on?

    • @oae
      @oae  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Message from Martin: In England they are called stocks!
      Making holes in the tubing would not produce more notes. On a brass instrument you need to add valves to do that. They add or subtract lengths of tube so a different series of notes is available. Might be tricky on a hosepipe, but maybe a mechanism involving taps (English for faucets!) might work. We do sometimes use holes in baroque horns, but just for making some of the out of tune notes in the harmonic series a bit more in tune. I don't like them.

    How is he changing the pitch without changing the length?

    • @oae
      @oae  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Answer from Martin: To make a noise I have to buzz my lips, and on 12 feet of tubing I get about 16 different notes by altering my lip tension. The series of notes I can play like this is called the harmonic series. If I then alter the length of the tube I get the same harmonic series, but pitched lower for a longer tube, higher for a shorter one.

    • @GreatBear1990
      @GreatBear1990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope you see this as it is a bit of an old comment but if you are changing pitch by just moving your lips, how do horn players like this read and play music? Do they all have perfect pitch to know exact what sound to make with each note? I play a few instruments including piano and violin and I've really never thought about memorizing each notes sound without having to play it to know what it sounds like.

    • @oae
      @oae  7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Answer from Martin: Good question!
      I certainly don't have perfect pitch. But just like you can feel that your left hand on the violin is in the right place before you play a note, I also have a muscular memory for each pitch on the horn. I admit that the facial muscles are a bit less tangible than the position of your hand, and as you get higher on a natural horn, or a hosepipe, the notes get closer together so you need more and more accuracy with these muscles. That means that we don't always get it right, and that's when you hear 'split' notes on the horn. But I'm a professional, so of course I take great pride in getting this sort of technical stuff right - I've been practising since I was 10, and it's still part of my daily routine. Incidentally, the person who made the comment that this video is simply fake, obviously does not realise that any professional brass player, and a good many amateurs, could reproduce what I did. It's just practice!
      Anyway, that aside, of course it does help also being able to hear the pitch before you play. It is this combined with muscle memory (and practice!) that enables you to play accurately. So I haven't got perfect pitch, but I've got good relative pitch, which means that once I'm hearing or playing one pitch I can hear the next one. Or in other words, I can hear a tune, or I can fit in with other musicians using my ears. Admittedly, the first note, 'from cold', can be a problem sometimes, especially if it's a high one. But there is usually something beforehand, even if it's just tuning up. If you listen carefully, you may well hear even experienced professionals playing a few quiet notes before a difficult first note.
      Hope that helps.

      Something called harmonics where by playing the same note but changing your airflow, you can play different notes. This is how trumpets only have three valves and yet a 4 octave range. Mainly brass instruments use harmonica but flutes and other instruments without octave keys have them as well

    So the hose is 12 feet long and what is the size (or diameter) I want to make mine ASAP :)

      Answer from Martin: The diameter isn't crucial, but narrower is easier to play.
      I wouldn't go wider than 1cm. If you are using a brass mouthpiece, it needs to
      fit the hose nicely. Good luck!

    How can it keep it's characteristic sound even when you're not using a metal!? I know there are plastic versions of brass instruments but it literally sounds like a normal horn

      I didn't take the mouthpiece intro consideration..

      @@JonatasMonte It's not the mouthpiece. The characteristic sound is almost entirely due to the vibrating air column inside the tube, not the material of the tube...

    Now I just got to find some used hose laying around an abandoned house or a thrift shop. Don't think I'd want to buy perfectly new hose just to chop it all to hell!!

    What if i painted the hose? Does it affect the sound that's going to produce?

    • @oae
      @oae  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reply from Martin: Painting it will make no difference to the sound. It's just about the air column inside. If you painted the inside though...probably still no difference, unless it was very thick!

      I think that's the third movement of one of Mozart's horn concerti (the fourth one I believe?)
