Just after watching this I went to gardening store and bought items required. It works. That's crazy. Though I have no clue how to play a horn but I might try to learn lol :)
When I was in an amateur community orchestra long ago, a horn player (from the professional symphony orchestra iirc) performed the Mozart horn concerto. His horn was clear plastic tubing and a metal funnel.
I'm in quarantine rigth now and a few days ago, I figured out that you can play a tone on a plain pvc pipe. To see this video that with some talent you can play propper music on a simple thing like a pipe gave me so much hope and made me exited, thanks! Btw I dont play any wind instrument, yet.
The point of the hand in a French horn bell isn't to dampen the sound. French horn players put their hand in the bell because French horns are naturally sharp instruments, so putting a hand in it makes it flatter.
Clogged Cord and also because natural horns could only play arpeggios, and changing the hand position in the bell allowed for a different variety of notes without crooks!
Actually, it IS to dampen the sound. After this became common practice, horn manufacturers deliberately started making their horns tend way sharp to compensate for this technique.
When i saw the title and clicked the Video i instinctively hummed the piece you played at the beginning (forgot the Name...) And then the music started and I had to laugh... 😂
Message from Martin: A French horn mouthpiece (or trumpet or trombone mouthpiece, depending on the diameter of the hose and the size of your lips) definitely make it sound better. But you can use nothing, or shape a piece of wax to give your lips a cushion (that's what didgeridoo players do). Or a little funnel. Just anything that gives your lips some comfort and room to vibrate.
That's what i've always tried to do with the hoses i use to clean my acquarium, problem is they're way too short for practical use (not enough overtones). Maybe, i'd have to carve some holes and try turning them into cornetts :D :D .
I was expecting you to play a hornpipe . . . In my younger days I worked at a steel fabrication company as a welder. The shop had 20' lengths of copper tubing. Being a brass player, the sight of all that tubing was too much for me. Every so often I would belt out very loud mystery noises when no one was around to watch, making sure no one caught me doing it.
One or two of the comments have been about making an entire orchestra from bits and pieces. I am wondering how you tune the hosehorn, so that it is in tune with your other instruments made from found items.
And now for the Two Ronnies to do the lyrics to the Mozart horn concerto. I made horn noises in the garden hose when I was a kid. Outside funnel is better than any restriction near the end. Try cutting the smaller ones to fit over tightly. Food, home brewing, or Ag supply funnel-big. French horn!
This is so nice! I have a few laying around haha. I guess i have made a soprano one with the mouthpiece of my Cornet and Trumpet. The Trumpet MP gives a really sharp vibrant sound. And with the MP of my Cornet it sounds more mellow closer to a French horn. And i have also made a Bass horn too. A really big one with the MP of my Bb baritone. It’s really awesome what you can make with stuff around the house! 😃🎺
Hi Brian, to be fair to Martin, this is down to clumsy editing. Martin did mention the substitution of the mouthpiece but it was omitted in the final cut. Apologies for this!
I'm surprised you've called those stocks when technically they are called pillories. Otherwise, the video was top. Such ingenuity with household items. Is there a way to add holes to add more notes or would that not work on?
Message from Martin: In England they are called stocks! Making holes in the tubing would not produce more notes. On a brass instrument you need to add valves to do that. They add or subtract lengths of tube so a different series of notes is available. Might be tricky on a hosepipe, but maybe a mechanism involving taps (English for faucets!) might work. We do sometimes use holes in baroque horns, but just for making some of the out of tune notes in the harmonic series a bit more in tune. I don't like them.
Now I just got to find some used hose laying around an abandoned house or a thrift shop. Don't think I'd want to buy perfectly new hose just to chop it all to hell!!
How can it keep it's characteristic sound even when you're not using a metal!? I know there are plastic versions of brass instruments but it literally sounds like a normal horn
@@JonatasMonte It's not the mouthpiece. The characteristic sound is almost entirely due to the vibrating air column inside the tube, not the material of the tube...
Amazing tone once you add the funnels. I can't believe a hosepipe sounds better than my horn, or at least, better than how I play my horn.
well later like mid video, he added a horn mouthpiece so maybe that's why it sounds better
Imagine an entire orchestra made from stuff around your house
YES MAKE THAT HAPPEN!!!!!!
There's an orchestra entirely made from fruit. It's shit but the they tried.
A Double Bass made out of a Shelving Unit...

Bravo! The "Yardium hose" player did great. Finally I can start to learn the Hornless Hose cheaply.
Just after watching this I went to gardening store and bought items required. It works. That's crazy. Though I have no clue how to play a horn but I might try to learn lol :)
How's it going?😂
So, step 1. Become a virtuoso horn player.
Kk
he is musician thats why he plays perfect

I believe you mean the Hosaphone™
The official Hosaphone site is useless now, though.
Okay, good idea for a Father’s Day gift! 😂

This looks crazy at the beginning and then keeps getting crazier and crazier... I love it so much
Are you kidding me? This is amazing!
When do we get to hear your Garden Symphony, your Tool Shed Trio, and your Koi Pond Quartet?
I thought the water music was appropriate for such an instrument.
Just gonna tuck this away for my post apocalyptic music making needs.

Is not that Mozart's Horn?
If it is 'naturally sharp' why didnt they use more tubing to make it flatter and in tune?....
Also the most convenient way to hold it
Thank you! We will be making this for my son's science project! Absolutely brilliant!
he's the neighbor everybody complains about. lol
Jake Paul basically...
I'm blessed with neighbors who care, they got me a trumpet mute and broke my window throwing it at me
"and I started to play it, in spite of the neighbours who begged me to stop" Flanders & Swann, "Ill Wind"
I'd join in...
Nice job playing & educational to boot!
Absolutely brilliant. Made me smile. Made my morning.
that’s sick
I was most impressed by the roll the bell plays in acoustic timbre.
I've just shown my dad this! Genius!
Do you have any videos on how to make a hose out of a horn?
I never laughed so much, and i mean in a good way. This man is absolutely brilliant
He's my teacher and he's as brilliant in real life as he appears in this! 😂
I didn't know David Coulthard was this talented at making music.

Really inspired me for my Music presentation. Awesomely creative!!!

+Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Thank you very much for the information!
Can you make a part two of this video... How to add valves to a hosepipe horn?
I like the stocks in the background...
If you don't coil the hose and whirl it around has you play, it make makes a very interesting sound, like a bugle band on the march.
こういうことを真面目にする人、凄く良いと思う!

All the time I was drinking a cup of coffee, I didn't realize I was at step one of making a hosepipe horn!

Just goes to show the physics and acoustics is the same for everything. Just some things sound better than others of course :)
That's really cool, thanks.

If I wasn't watching you play a hose, I would have thought it was a horn.

You have to cut it to the right length.
Very nice and funny DIY!
Brilliant!
Do you know how Dennis Brain constructed his for the Hoffnung concerts?
Halfway through the video (starting 2:53) a mouthpiece is added, but there's no mention of it.

Excellent, I´m off to raid the shed as soon as it stops raining. Thanks.

He did switch to a proper mouthpiece which is an improvement.
now how do I make a mouthpiece out of household items?
very clever.i like the pan to the chicken..
sounds perfect
This is awesome.
José Piper is working on a concerto for Martin.
he chances de mouthpiece without warning!
well I know what I am building today

Les Luthiers tried it in late 60's with his "Gom-Horn"
Nice man
My friend did that opening song at solo ensemble this year. He plays the French horn and got superior
I'm now working out how to make valves out of Gardena bits....
I tried this at hoem bit with a trombone mouthpiece, a 9 inch funnel, and just shy of 50 feet of I inch garden hose. Should I try a bigger funnel?
Note, with interest, the sneaky bugger substituted a Pukka mouthpiece(ish)

Darn I know that piece. What the name of that piece used in the introduction? I love it. Oh yea great video ha ha Got to try that.
Mozart Horn Concerto no. 4 it's the third movement
How long should I make the tubing if I want a horn in the key of D?
4:37 Is that Mark Zuckerburg?
It’s Roger Montgomery.
All this, like tears in the rain.
I'm thinking of attempting this. Could a kazoo work as the mouthpiece or would that change the resulting sound entirely?
wonderful!!!!!!!

Does this remind anyone of the Red Green show?
I have watched 3 different videos of this stuff and i honestly dont know if this works or not

this is too good to be true -.-

bravo

Gafa tape and scissors! LOL:D
I want to build a horn out of metal as a project in school. Does anybody know where i can get some information about this?
I came here because I don't have money for a French horn, I'm not disappointed
I will be making one or two or three! Yeah...three!
i know how to make a different type of hosepipe horn but it involves a gatorade bottle and some aluminium foil
Its no bong but still pretty good
Amazing 😂
