    Timeless technology. Unix like systems used teletype instead of screens in the 60s and still today Linux terminals still function the exact same ways today with inline escape codes, formatting commands, movement commands etc as they did way back then. I'm looking at the book in the video and it's amazing how close everything is to how the modern technology still works today. Also a terminal window on Linux is called a "terminal emulator" because it is emulating a teletype printer.
    It's connecting to the system TTY (teletype connection) which software can write to (in your case literally) like a Bash REPL (Read-eval-print loop) program which starts other programs so they can write to the TTY also using the same escape commands in your book, or other similar encodings with small differences.
    I even have a standard program on my installation of Ubuntu called "ed" which is an editor that was made to work with teletype to write one line at a time like a typewriter.
    I bet you can hook up a Linux computer to that thing and use it as a live terminal pretty ez LOL.
    This video connected a lot of dots for me, it's pretty cool to see.
    Invented in 1914 Teletype is aging like fine wine, recently part of the integration of Bash and Linux into Windows terminal. When people were so excited about that Windows Terminal commercial I was laughing, "You're excited about technology invented in 1914 and Bash in 1989, 30 years late.". Windows is a damn joke.

      Thank you. I have printed to the typewriter using a raspberry pi. My next step is to send properly formatted and escaped content.

    Ei don't necessarily NEED one, but gee if I don't WANT one! 😁 I could imagine myself making handouts for the Delta Green RPG, giving student feedback-notes, making pamphlets etc. with this.

      That is possible. I like the idea.

      It is not as loud as it seems.

    That was so cool. I remember a friends father doing this with a Commodore 64 in the 1980’s.

      Thank you for watching. A while ago, companies used daisy wheel printers for sending billing statements. It must have been loud.

      Something like that. It took me years to track down one of these typewriters with a computer interface built into it.

    I'd pay good money for a modern typewriter printer.

    Hi I wondered if you would share the process how you got the typewriter to print, Im thinking of starting a project to use python a raspberry pi and a type writer to right code but analogue rather than using a monitor, thanks

      I got a USB to Centronics cable and hooked the Typewriter up to a windows laptop using the generic text printer. Additionally, I did the same with a Linux computer and set up a text printer.

    • @hundsboog
      @hundsboog 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And thtas really all? Basically i did the same but not to a noteworthy success. Under Windows I had an output with notepad and the settings like you did but text printed out without spaces. Under Linux Manjaro there wasnt an output at all. Need further investigation. ;-) Maybe you can share the amazon link to the cable you used? I have the suspicion, that centronics is not centrenics sometimes. I collected to beautiful machines btw, a Nakajima Remstar E395, which is very similar to yours and a beautiful IBM 6788 with CRT next to it and a floppy drive to save my texts. This tech must be saved from trash by all means!@@Linus007

    Do you know how similar this would be to the Olivetti DY450 printer? I am trying to get it to work with an Arabic daisywheel (also Olivetti, but not mentioned as a supported language in the DY450 manual) - it looks like your recent comment mentions that a linux set up works better, what distro? any drivers? Thanks!

    Hello, Just came across this. I have essentially the same machine, as I have a Swintec. Yours and mine are both based on Nakajimas. I am having trouble with the driver and the interface communicating using Windows 10 (64). I was able to use Word on XP to have my typewriter work as printer.
    Great Job, by the way!
    Could you help me with what cord you are running and which driver?
    Thank you.

      I am using a generic text printer driver. For the cable, I am using a USB to Centronics cable. I get far better results from Linux systems than Windows. I got better results with a star tech print server. It allows you to control the speed that text is sent to the typewriter.

      @@Linus007 Thank you for your insight. I finally got my windows 7 machine to work, but it seems to be using a carriage return twice(no extra line feed). I'll Google the server you mentioned and try using a Linux word processor.
      Thank you again

      Carriage returns and line feeds are handled differently between Windows and Linux. Your typewriter may have a setting to behave differently between the two types of line feeds.

    Can you configure the generic printer to do bold, underline etc.? Even proportional daisy wheels?

    • @Linus007
      @Linus007  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it is possible. The bold feature slightly moves the carriage and retypes the letter. For underlining, the underscore character is typed without wasting tape.

    Where did you find this? I have been looking for a typewriter that can copy documents from a pc and this particular model (which I’m very interested in) is nowhere to be found on the Internet

    These guys have a similar project, targeting Linux systems / RasPi as a platform: github.com/Chaostreff-Potsdam/erika3004
    This very feature is not implemented yet, though

      Wow! You really helped me. I live around the corner from these guys (Potsdam-Berlin), and just ordered an "Erica", which I will hopefully be using as a printer and a Typewriter which saves the written text ... as text. Thanks!
