A beautiful song, sung as it should be, with emotion. I can listen to this song 100 times and tears still flow down my face. My two favorite singers to sing this song with the emotion it deserves is, of course Charles and also Dame Shirley Bassey.
why? why do we appreciate the good things when it is mainly too late? Or mainly it is life's fingers to say "you should have taken more effort, you twat"

Always loved this song, but the lyrics become more real as you reach a certain age. No one else comes close in performing it, he puts such feeling into it, and the French accent makes it even more unique.
Ascoltando questa straordinaria melodia, abbinata a queste toccanti, profonde, significative parole, l'effetto pianto è motivo di normale, passionale coinvolgimento.

Yesterday when I was young The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue I teased at life as if it were a foolish game The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day And only now I see how the years ran away Yesterday when I was young So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out I never stopped to think what life was all about And every conversation I can now recall Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all Yesterday the moon was blue And every crazy day brought something new to do I used my magic age as if it were a wand And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond The game of love I played with arrogance and pride And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away And only I am left on stage to end the play There are so many songs in me that won't be sung I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young
The guy was a creative genius who wrote and sang some timeless classics among many other things like helping to hide refugees in the family appartment in Paris during WW2 at enormous risk to themselves.....
A 'big fan, I was fortunate to be in Paris on July 1, 2019 attending a tribute to his life and music he brought to life. Wonderful tribute, met Seda who is keeping his memory alive. We all miss him, some much more/

שיר מרגש עד כדי דמעות. זכרון וגעגועים לאבא שלי הוא היה שומע את שארל זאנבור ושירים צרפתיים בימי שבת, בזמן שהיה מכין ארוחת בוקר לכולנו. A moving song to the point of tears. Memory and longing for my father. He would listen to Charles Zanbor and French songs on Saturdays, while he would prepare breakfast for all of us.
its sad how since he died people cover his song and then pretend that they wrote it but i will always know his voice if different from others and thats when i respect he is talented and amazing
It’s only when you reach that golden age that the lyrics in this song kicks you in the gut. The words are wasted on the young as it has no real meaning. They have all the time in the world, or so they think. The speed in which life passes by is scary. So write that book you’ve been talking about for years, write those songs. Whatever it is get on with it. Spend more time with your children. Stop the petty arguments with your spouse. Respect yourself! Then hopefully at the end of life the lyrics of this song won’t haunt you.

This song and his own interpretation, is so bery touching. I wish thete could be mote of him in this terrible Trumpian age. The world we grew up in meant something to us all - ask Mr. Aznavour.
This song is dedicated to my father he is 82 he denied, abandoned and rejected me all my life, for a moment last year during the holidays we reunited and I loved and forgived him then after the holidays he rejected me again told me stay away from him. This is his favorite song.
Aznavour was the last and, in my opinion, the greatest exponent of the twentieth century French chanson. A gifted stylist, with his distinctive vibrato tenor voice, and a prolific song composer, he brought an actor's sensibility to performance. He became the characters he sang about and enabled those who saw and heard him perform to see, feel and understand the lives and emotions of those characters. They became real because reality and experience was what Aznavour invested in them.
What a beautiful song this is. When reading the lyrics along - while keeping in mind that I can get it wrong - I got the feeling that this song is about a man who is regretting past events. I hope he also sees the beauty in the wisdom he had gain over the years.
I love this man and this song - have loved the song since the late '60s and, of course, now the lyrics mean even more to me, since so much of it is true. Reflection is good and owning up to the past makes you stronger and a better human being today as you continue to grow and strive for more meaningful things. So wonderful to see that this excellent lyricist and interpreter of songs is still performing at 90 !
Thank you for all the songs and all the great moments of joy and tears of happiness ! Great artists die , but they are never forgotten ! And you , my friend , are the greatest of them all ! RIP
How true the words to this song are ,you can only feel the reality of it all when your life is best part spent, and you are actually old .very nice but quite depressing.
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young ... Quit slacking and work like there is no tomorrow cause you need more life experience ... The foolish games are indeed over no time for drifting in the past unless you try to figure out the why ... But it is easy to see you need to see the world and encounter everything to get clear know-how ...
His voice brings so much emotion and truth to these words. It is so meaningful especially as you get older It is a song I have listened to and will continue to listen to, no one else does it better
When you're past 50 and look back upon your life this song hits like a Mack truck, right in the heart and soul.

Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away
Yesterday when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday when I was young

They became real because reality and experience was what Aznavour invested in them.
A beautiful song and very poetic. Rosa Larsen
What a voice! Timeless and immortal.
שיר קסום, אבא שלי כל שבת היה מכין ארוחת בוקר ושומע ושר את השירים של שארל זנאבור, גדול הזמרים,
שיר שאני מצליח ורוצה לבכות אני שם.
What a beautiful song this is. When reading the lyrics along - while keeping in mind that I can get it wrong - I got the feeling that this song is about a man who is regretting past events. I hope he also sees the beauty in the wisdom he had gain over the years.
Reflects with absolute clarity my own experience in life. Now at age 84 I see how truly these words fit my life. Forgive me Father.
No words.... So unbelievably beautiful.....
Thank you. She. Charles. R.i.P my Friend.
I love this man and this song - have loved the song since the late '60s and, of course, now the lyrics mean even more to me, since so much of it is true. Reflection is good and owning up to the past makes you stronger and a better human being today as you continue to grow and strive for more meaningful things. So wonderful to see that this excellent lyricist and interpreter of songs is still performing at 90 !
oh what a wonderful man. I just love this sad song. It reminds me how precious life is.

İMMORTAL.....RESPECT....BİG MASTER
How true the words to this song are ,you can only feel the reality of it all when your life is best part spent, and you are actually old .very nice but quite depressing.
Good to know that there is someone feeling exactly the same as I do 😔
A master singer and masterful and meaningful song.
It is so meaningful especially as you get older
It is a song I have listened to and will continue to listen to, no one else does it better
Rip Mr Charles Aznavour. Thank you for your beautiful songs. The Legend.
