I have a Seiko 5 thats close to 25 years old. It’s been to hell and back twice over. It runs like a dream. Best watch I’ve ever owned in terms of value and reliability. Can’t ever go wrong with a Seiko5. Considering this new one now.
@@LudicInterface They have been for years. I have a '96 SKX007 that had a misaligned chapter ring; and I recently bought a SKX009 (actually from the last ever production run), with an aligned chapter ring, but with the hour hand way off in the rhubarb.
The advantage it has over so many others is its features which are distinctly Seiko. The case shape and dial design have identity that is recognizable from any angle. I'm glad Seiko have held on to the style.

It’s a watch, it’s all bout the details. And the attention to details is not there. Which is a shame as they can design really nice watches, and screw everything up in production process. Great review Marc.
Exactly. Seiko doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the likes of Orient and a lot of microbands these days in quality or price. Even some Chinese brands are looking to offer better deals imo.
As both GMT invented & Longitude problem solved in England I feel that any map of the world that doesn't have the British Isles in the centre is fundamentally wrong.
Just got mine. Thanks Marc. It looks outstanding, perfect size for a 7.5 wrist and a classy/clean looks. Great design. Needs a bracelet that compliments it better.
As one of the few people on TH-cam who didn't hate on the 5kx ( I suspect because you understand what people want and what people buy , as an actual shop owner ) , I hope you do really well out of these 👍 the black dial and bracelet looks really nice , if I ever get a job again I might treat myself to one 🤣

I've always been a fan of that "Automatic" italicized font. 40x11.5 are great middle-ground dimensions, especially the thickness. I will definitely be picking one up and recommending these to anyone looking to get into "real" watches.
Love Seiko...I do. If I catch a sale I’d grab one of these BUT the micro-brand scene is soooo epic right now. The $150-600 price range is being owned by micro brands in 2020.

🤔 it’s just north of $200 US dollars...at that price I’m ok with a mineral Crystal and unsigned crown, although if Marc puts those mod pieces out I will be buying them😉
SRPE 53 just arrived. Man what a piece. Not disappointed is an understatement! The sculptured case is breathtaking - they way it plays in the light. The dial goes from inky black to vibrant blue depending on the light. Perfect proportions for my 7" wrist. Bracelet is your usual Seiko 5 stuff. Functional, but that's it. At £289 (after customs charges 😒) its STILL a steal. Get tooling up on that solid screwed links/milled clasp bracelet Mark. You've got my custom for it already! :)
Very nice review. Beautiful models . Seiko has solved the problem of the bezels not being in sync with the 12 hr mark in some watches by removing the rotating bezels!!!. But this looks gorgeous. Definitely going to buy one.
I love my SRPE55. I know it’s only a $250 dollar watch and you can get it on sale for cheaper but it’s my first “real” watch with an automatic movement and I’m happy with it so far. When I can afford another one it’s going to be a Tissot or a Hamilton.
Metcal Rolex sent a cease and desist over using the “J” and “O” words in videos, I would hate to see the legal response to someone using the Explorer name.

Excellent video. When I first saw this watch, I thought it was just a Seiko 5KX without the rotating bezel (because it kind of looks like that from first glance). Didn't realize it was a new case design until this video.
I think the lack of bezel brings it closer to the 'desk diver' and further from a dedicated diver in my opinion. However, I think it looks great and almost a larger version of their 36-38mm dress watches.
Thanks! Would have loved to see a side by side comparison between the 42mm 5KX, these new 40mm-ers and the 38mm SKX013. I found both the 42mm and 38mm SKXs very to be top-heavy and I wonder how the new 40mm-ers feel on the wrist.
Maybe it is due to growing up in the '80s, but I just can't get behind two-tone watches. That being said, the blue, black, and gray are excellent. Nice release by Seiko. It's like a Seiko version of the Black Bay 36 & 41 models, which certainly is not a bad thing. I am sure they will sell well.
The old version must have been available in two sizes because I saw them in the shop and one was noticeably smaller than the other. In fact the smaller one looked very small.
I bought the silver dial on the nylon strap recently. For a while I wore it on a silver/black Bond NATO but now have it on a black leather rally strap and it looks the business!

I sold every seiko I had only one I have is the padi samurai and still have some alignment issues (but is so nice!) That first watch you showed has some crazy misaligned chaptering. When I was 5 I got a citizen promaster that still works no misalignment they still sale the same edition and still no misalignment. Seiko needs to step up their games. I don't want a watch that I need to pray to dont get a bad one when arrives to the mail. You rock Marc.
I really like the design of this one. However, I feel like the quality control on these seiko 5s used to be better. I have the exact same model that you show as a comparison (the blue srpd with the diving bezel). It's beautiful but every time I look at it I see this tiny piece of dust under the crystal and a subtle stain on the dial. And the chapter ring on the first one should really be better.
I’m between the blue dial and black dial one for my first watch. I don’t wear social clothes, more like pants and logo less t shirts. What do you think I should get? The blue looks fine but I’m worried about repeating it everyday

Fantastic new watches!! Love the smaller case size and the classic colors 👌 I guess we need to snap out of expecting lower prices on new Seiko 5's just because the old ones (with 7S movements) are very economical... These have not flooded the market to have the prices drop.. On the wrist, am I right in thinking that, this one seems *almost* identical in size due to the larger crystal? If it had a sapphire crystal, and a screw down crown, this would be an EXCELLENT watch
It would be an excellent watch that costs more.
@@brandonabbott95 is that even true though? Sapphire with a screwdown can be found for cheaper than this model
am i seeing that inner bezel is not done properly ? i checked several times in the video and especially when you check 3-6-9-12 markers with that inner bezels , they are not properly aligned. really strange.
My goodness. Folded links at this price should be a crime.
Seiko has gone from the best value in the game to a mediocre cash grab. Straight up coasting at this point.
Honest question...What are you buying for $275 instead?
@@kpro1890 Orient Mako II and a boat load of change, or a Kamasu and a smaller boat load of change. Or a San Martin or a few Pagani Designs from Aliexpress. These Seiko 5s are nothing but a blatant cash grab.
@@kpro1890 used Prospex watches go for $300 all day. Orient Kamasu is another great value proposition. Save up a little more and you're now looking at entry-level Swiss: Glycine, Hamilton, Steinhart etc. Delaying gratification just a little bit is always worth it!
Kethan glycine combat sub for 25 more dollars with a Swiss movement
which dial color looks the best?
When are these pieces hitting the market?
Wow, with bigger dial, I got Seiko 5 1986 model, thats working fine even today.
Is the camera angle or the chapter ring of the first watch is quite misaligned?
Definitely a competitor/ alternative of an Alpinist or SARB, really cool looking and great price.
For those looking for a field watch but something unique and keeping close to the standard Explorer vibe but doing its own thing......
I'm sold on the grey with ss bracelet👌
Right on
A grey sunburst Sarb. Now that I would buy.
Just got the grey one as well and no regrets
I pulled the trigger on the blue dial with bracelet I live in Ireland it cost me €40 roughly to ship but I hope I have done the right thing my first automatic can't wait, great vid!
Very good look watch.
