I need an “The Objectively Best Songs From Each Album Explained” vid asap😂
i almost started spitting on that in this one but had to keep myself on topic skldfjlksdjf
Zach I still want a Swiftologist TS album ranking from you and Madeline I wanna know how yall rank her albums!
@@tylerhartman3034 they have said many times they don't rank her albums anymore
@@theswiftologistyes Zach I second this video recommendation.
THIS
Loml is such a quiet, little pocket of devastation that it is understandable it being overlooked but i KNEW you'd never ignore it so i'm seated!
ofc not!!! xx
What a perfect description. “Such a quiet little pocket of devastation.” 🎯
One of my favorites on the album, so great that you acknowledged it so very eloquently, my quiet King!
You get it. You get her. So nice to see a real intellectual discussion of her work.
She deserves no less, esp with this album (that made me a F A N)
We all know where we were when we gasped to “you’re the loss of my life.”
we had no idea it was THAT serious
Like I literally have the video of me and my friend in shock
@@theswiftologistit seems she really DOES keep secrets just to keep him. Oof my torn up heart n confused AF at the line between "Mastermind" and just diabolical self harm. Doesn't this masochist need to find frozen or broken men and fix them with your inner goddess only end in agony? From ice boy Brit to bad broken but both charming men. Not at all hubby make up tho, neither.
YES. "Our field of dreams engulfed in fire, your arson's match your somber eyes and I'll still see it until I die" is the most INCREDIBLE run of lyrics of ALL. TIME.
My heartache is that this is just as well written as all too well the 10 minute version. And I love that song as well!
I’m legit crying just READING those lyrics. The POWER of the raw emotion.
Having lost my husband to addiction, that ending is probably the most powerful lyric I have ever heard. He will always be the loss of my life.
Agreed!!!!! Chef’s kiss
"right where you left me" is my favorite taylor swift song from my favorite taylor swift album, so I'm happy to see it considered the objective best song on the album
It was my most played Spotify song last year.
It’s a relatively new discovery for me and it has stop straight to the top of my faves
I saw the thumbnail and agreed with you, Loml is peak Taylor Swift like it feels like watching a devastatingly sad movie in just 5 minutes

I always took the “dancing phantoms” to be her memories of them together. I can picture her laying in bed, unwittingly recalling the happy memories of them together-and the recollection of those moments is mocking her pain further.
And the following line emphasizes this for me; since she retroactively realizes their love is counterfeit, but it doesn’t help bc she fell for it and is still shocked by it.
It also kind of brings me back to the dancing scene in Maroon "And I chose you, the one I was dancing with in New York, no shoes. Looked up at the sky"
Yess yess I thought this too!!
@@kira8550I absolutely agree, there's definitely a connection with maroon here
I interpreted it this way too, but the lyric that it reminded me of is from All Too Well, “we’re dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light”
This has always been my interpretation as well. Flashbacks can be a very real and painful part of narcissistic abuse. I often felt like I was being literally haunted in my own house, like I couldn't pass by certain spots without seeing scenes replay in my mind.
I love how she describes him as black and white whereas she calls herself greige. They both look so so similar, but in fact are not the same colours. They were never enmeshed the way she thought they were.
Woooow that HITS.
lmol and TTPD are for the girlies who ruminate and fall in love with the phantoms of a long gone situationship, and not everyone gets it. But I do
THE GIRLS THAT GET IT GET IT!!!
Absolutely! 💯! ❤❤❤
glad to know i'm not alone in that :')🤍
Taylor might release more albums, but, as a writer, a part of me will always be in the tortured poets department
as you SHOULD
@@theswiftologistthank you :)
"I'm combing through the braid of lies" also speaks to having been told so many lies, lies that are intertwined, crisscrossing into one another, to the point that one lie can't be untangled from the others. You can't even figure out which lie began where or when. The untruths actually become one entity, no beginning, no end. And trying to comb through that braid of lies, only causes them to entangle more. In the end, you can only cut the whole thing off at the roots.
Being with a narcissist is so much like that.
“I’ll never leave….nevermind”!!! That line kills me every time!!!
loml is in fact legendary, and is most definitely necessary!
wellll YESSSSS
loml is such a devastating song, and if you’ve never felt the way she so gorgeously portrays the heartbreak and anguish of that kind of deep disappointment and loss then I guess you’ll just never get it. It’s a iykyk situation. It may not be my top favorite song on the album but it’s a stunner for sure and demands attention. It’s also an essential song for the lore, and the album wouldn’t be complete without it.
it is THE show stopper
@ 💯💯💯
that's so true, when the album came out the song was just sad, but a few months later I had a similar experience and I was like "oh... I never wished to relate to this but I understand now🙃"
Something I love about Taylor and this song though is that while I haven’t personally experienced this exact situation, she is so honest and raw and eloquent when describing it I feel I DO understand it! The song is so devastating, I am devastated, even with the only somewhat related experiences I have to bring to it. That’s how good she is!!!
Nobody does it like you, Zack. Nobody. This album has my heart, body, and soul.
one of my favorite things about loml is how it is directly related to her performance of i don’t wanna live forever on the eras tour (chicago n2 and coincidentally the night you and madeline went to!) a few days after the news of their breakup broke. the way she was clearly crying and the way we can hear her voice breaking on the line “wondering if i dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life”. i know we don’t see much of taylor’s private life anymore but the eras tour allowed her to heal and process things right in front of our eyes, without us even realizing. there is something so vulnerable about baring your soul and grieving in front of thousands of people without them even knowing it. it is a true 4th wall breaking moment bc you can see the second she cooks up the idea for a song on her next album while reconnecting with and singing a song from 6 years ago. incredible song and a true testament to her artistry and candour.
brava! what a beautiful observation!
I have always thought that her line about her rain-soaked body from The Black Dog is about the Boston show
@ that’s what i think of every time i listen to the black dog! definitely think that was what inspired that line bc performing question must’ve also been a “baring of the soul” moment for her and a clear dedication to matty. their messaging and communication via song has always been so interesting to me.
I will simply never get over this album and even if it’s not the Grammys album of the year it sure is ours
1000%
It is definitely a Once In A Lifetime album! Every time I listen to it I can’t understand how she could move on so quickly after having felt this way about someone (Matty). I still can’t understand how she can love again!!!!
I mean it could still win maybe?
As life-changing as it was for me personally (and I'm sure many/most Swifties), Sabrina, Billie & Chappel's albums all had much more impact on the overall zeitgeist. I'd be shocked (and probably annoyed tbh) if she won this year.
I’m rooting for Cowboy Carter just bc that album is such experiential Americana to me. But TTPD? Best album of all time. It CHANGED me. The emotional roller coaster of my first listen…I laughed. I screamed. I cried. My cells were rearranged. I have NEVER felt seen like I feel by The Black Dog. It’s SO HONEST.
This video was so epic! Would love more lyrical breakdowns - no one does it like you. Perfect mixture of explaining the lore and the choice of words so wisely and captivatingly. Loved every sec of this video!!
No other album or artist has ever expressed or validated heart break like this. And it hurts me that people don’t have the emotional intelligence to fully grasp how other worldly and phenomenal this is. I do believe that had I not experienced loml to a tee, I wouldn’t appreciate this album for all that it is. And part of me is so jealous that others haven’t had to experience that pain, but I have the luck to be a fan of an artist who can so vividly put what feels like my exact emotions, into words. Truly beautiful
RIGHT?! Like damn, I WISH I didn’t get these songs down to my bones. Oof.
😂
The shade in this video is top tier and I'm applauding. 😂
we have to cook a little bit....
If you “don’t get” The Tortured Poets Department, I “don’t get” you.
and thats on period
SUCH a great point about how in Red she played the character of victim, and in TTPD she's playing a fool.
the new mic quality is so good, Zach!
thank u !!! rip bejeweled mic
22:57 and 25:19 Yessss, exactly. This is the same Taylor that wrote "I can see the end as it begins" in Wildest Dreams and tried to pretend she'd be fine with it.
I feel like tortured poets is unseen kind of, like it did break records and was heavily criticized but that honestly overshadows the hidden gems in it and loml is one of it.
Loml is literally so underrated and ignored I must say, and most people just don't get it like we do.
Also, I love the aesthetic bookshelf background ❤
Since songs became my best friends as a lonely only child and teenager, I’ve come across many a great album in my 63 years. TTPD is now my favourite album, because of its excellence, and it made me a Swiftie.
well yes!!!
well yes!!!
well yes!!!
well yes!!!
lonely only child here from a military family (we moved a lot) - “songs became my best friends” wow. that’s perfect and so true for me as well
"the best song is not always your favourite song" YESSSSS SPEAKKK
i think my favourite from TTPD is So Long London, just because i (sadly) relate to it quite a lot, but on the first few listens loml really stuck out to me cause its so raw
in my my head there´s this picuture of just a heartbroken girl sitting in front of her piano and i think thats so beautiful
Also the fact that loml goes into I can do it with a broken heart really hits you
1:20 it’s a very specific feeling to be able to relate to this song, and if you’ve been through it, you know she chose her words so meticulously to explain the pain, loss of hope, etc.
The second that bridge comes in is the second I’m deceased cause wtf was she thinking giving this masterpiece to us without any warning 😭
The Swifties that cannot accept this is a Matty song will hate this video
those swifites that are convinced taylor had the best time of her life with joe....
Didnt know they existed but im sorry for them. Reading comprehension really is on a swift decline
@melanzanealfunghettowhich is like...sir read the room. She calls Joe jail, slammer, a weight and all but shouts out that he was boring and miserable. She had enough of Alwyn and our girl wanted out, she was practically screaming it but oh no...honorable Alwyn think of his feelings... He was the one. Like come on, she did her time already 😂. Alwyn and her only got together bc of the Kim and Kanye saga not to mention the Calvin Harris, Tom Hiddleston nonsense. He was the definition of a landing couch and he didn't even deliver. At least Matty came with a bill of (fake) goods 😂
What's been annoying to see is so many swifties not understanding the artistry of TTPD simply bc they refuse to believe that so many songs are about matty bc it 'ruins' the narrative of who Taylor is in their minds
While I *HATED* her with that rat, I can absolutely admit that a lot of this record and this song in particular is about him. Idk why people keep saying that Joe is when he's only the focus of maybe a few songs (So Long, London & How Did It End are two that come to mind). Joe's mentioned in other songs (FOTS) but the rat's the main focus
I would love Taylor to actually watch this. I wonder what it would feel like to her to know that someone breaks down her songs so perfectly and actually understands what she was going through when she wrote such beautiful, heartbreaking lyrics
“Your arson’s match, your somber eyes”. Always gets me.
The Prophecy was nominated RS' song of the year, and, even though, it's far from being one of my faves, I do agree it's one of the best written on TTPD and a crucial part of its narrative, I think we really need a video specifically about that diva
we were robbed of an loml piano performance every night on the imaginary ttpd tour
I would love to see you break down all of your other favorite tracks from TTPD because this was fucking epic. I loved every minutes of it, thank you Zach!
Hey! This is such an incredible video (genuinely one of your best yet, Zach) I just want to provide my alternate interpretation of "when your impressionist paintings of heaven turned out to be fakes well you took me to hell too". For me, I've always interpreted this line as not the paintings being fake depictions of heaven, but as the paintings themselves being counterfeit. I've always seen this as if he has stolen the paintings from someone else while claiming they are his own. It's as if he's passing off these words as his own, words only ever meant for her, while in reality he has said the same thing to many people in the past. He's stealing his words from these people, promising an ideal world that does not exist at all in the first place. Hopefully this made any sense whatsoever (just woke up but HAD to watch the new swiftologist video). Love your channel, so excited to stream the grammys with you tonight 💙
As a student and graduate of Literature, and especially as a teacher, that was extremely well put! You have a brain for analysis of art, which not just anybody can do, and I hope your teacher or professor or fellow students and even people in your life appreciate that! You're a 💎 gem! 💎
Ironically, ignore the fact that I just wrote poorly written sentences, I'm on my day off😊
@elizzybec thank you so much!
I loved this with every inch of my soul, you need to do more lyrical analysis like this one, you ate.
You post this and I say well yes, finally. My fav song of all of the album is loml. Been writing essays in comments about how great it is and no one gets it. Thank youuu ❤❤
its THEEEE moment!
ZACH, so well done! You have such great insight.
I believe critics of the album are also the same people who are happy to grab McDonald's at a drive- thru to satisfy their hunger. TTPD is a 7 course meal that is meant to be savored. Only some will really wait for the delayed gratification that comes!!
The perfect breakdown of a stunning song. I'm blown away by it every time I hear it. And I love how the production is understated to allow us to give full attention to the brilliantly tragic and beautiful lyrics. 'Dancing phantoms on the terrace, are they second hand embarrassed that I can't get out of bed 'cause something counterfeit's dead' is one of my all time favourite lines from Taylor. For me it's a tie between LOML and ATW as objectively her best song. Would've, Could've, Should've is probably 3rd.
I have never even been through a breakup, and still find loml fantastic. Like a good autobiography that helps me expand my experiences. I have had my fair share of heartbreak though, pinning that as her main topic made so much sense to why I can still relate to so many of her songs.
Loved your powerpoint presentation!!
If you have been through a friend breakup, you can def get it. Some friend breakups are even tougher to get through than dating breakups!
@@jillsarah7356this 💔
The more time I have with TTPD, the more it’s becoming one of my fav albums 🤍
What you said about people's attention span for songs is 100% true and we blame TikTok
TikTok has greatly influenced the way people consume music and how artists make music
Now, if the songs from an album isn't trending on TikTok because of a 15 second moment from the song, chronically online gen Zs and Twitter gays say it's a bad album, lyricism has greatly been reduced, now people say "I'm so Julia" is better that "without ever touching his skin, how can i be guilty as sin?"
And I feel like artists have also made their music to conform with the new terrible standard. (Excluding: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and OG artists)
I absolutely agree with this!
I adored this close reading!! Would love for you to do more!
def will do !!
Omg I’m glad you’re as obsessed with loml as I am. Idk what she put in that song but it’s so beautifully heartbreaking
I am obsessed with your vids every single video a hit
aww thank you
What a beautiful and thoughtful deep dive and analysis. I love these kinds of videos
I have listened to this song so many times. This and how did it end cut me to the bone emotionally. There really is nothing like the heartbreak of finally letting your walls down, and only then do they betray you...
Living for the new set up ❤
it's definitely coming together finallyyyyyyy
It's very TTPD and I love it ✒️📖
I never thought about the prophecy being about one version of taylor begging to another version of herself, it's so interesting
I’m obsessed with this song and this was an amazing breakdown and I learnt even more 🫶🏼🫶🏼 flawless as usual Zach!
I absolutely love TTPD. It is messy, raw, and honest. I feel like she does an incredible job with her writing. Frankly, I believe it’s her best writing. It’s so high brow.
I always assumed "the ink bleeds" was a reference to crying as she writes, since water is what causes ink to bleed on paper and become illegible
Zach, your explanations and insights are SO good and it always helps me see these songs in a different light. I originally catch only about 60% of the things you notice! Anyways, glad loml is getting the attention it DESERVES as one of the DIVAS on the album.
I might have missed you mentioning it, but also the title itself is interesting.
She CHOSE to call it “loml” instead of “loss of my life”. At first glance it looks like just an abbreviation but it’s definitely shorter than “my boy only breaks his favourite toys” so she didn’t do it because of its length.
I always thought she did it because “loml” can also stand for “love of my life”
That’s where it hurts the most.
Like she intentionally left it open to interpretation because even after she finished writing it she still couldn’t let go of the fact that she thought he was the love of her life too.
YES!!! This song guts me. Superb writing. Lyrics at their very finest. I literally get chills every time I hear "Your arson's match, your somber eyes". It's perfection. Those who don't get it, seriously need to be wearing a helmet.
Honestly loml is my track 5 ❤ this break down of the prophecy is why it’s my favorite song 🥰💖I love your understanding and perspective of Taylor Swift and her work!
One of my favorite from TTPD ❤
Amazing video (like always) !
“Who’s gonna stop us from waltzing back into rekindled flames??” - “Me, with a chainsaw!”
Also, the parallels to White Horse. Musically they're very similar, it's clear, but they're both songs about fairy tales and love delusions crashing down.
There is an element of a Greek tragedy that Taylor keeps making the same mistakes. Love Story/White Horse, Ours/Dear John, But Daddy I Love Him/Loml. But then again it's very human.
Like when she did the Mashup of loml/white horse ❤
Agreed
”A con man sells a fool a ”get love quick”-scheme” is probably my favorite line in all of TTPD.
I love the PowerPoint and the art you chose, Zack!!!
Okay we need a skincare totorial from the Glowtologist.
Wow, it was so interesting to hear you break down the song! I would love you to do more breakdowns like this! Especially for Chloe or sam or Sophia or Marcus 🖤🖤🖤
Oh... loml was the reason I absolutely fell for this album on April 19th!!! It was my surprise song in Paris N1 and the fact that she PICKED this song as the FIRST surprise song from TTPD when it wasn't even that famous among fans, to me, meant it was PERSONAL! And I was seated. I clapped, I cheered, I was speechless!! It was my song, and I knew then it was hers too ❤❤❤❤❤
Loml not only is the best song on the album but one of the best songs ever made in the history of human kind
When my situation ship and I had a little hiccup Loml was the only song that I could listen to to feel understood. Luckily we made it work but still Loml has a special place in my heart just for that reason
Wow, this was fantastic, Zach. I love LOML. Tortured Poets as a whole is such a clear example of Taylor’s trajectory toward maturity as person and poet. I agree she is brave - it’s always easier to shove all of the blame onto the other guy. TTPD is such a contrast to the image of her deeply wronged younger self. I am so intrigued to see what she does next. If she writes the worst men best, yet now is from all appearances in a very happy relationship, and at the same time continuing to deepen her personal well and ability to speak on it - I do try to imagine what she might produce next. Don’t know why I try since she surprises me every time.
seeing the thumbnail i was like i don’t know what he’s gonna say but i know the best song is loml and WELL you don’t disappoint. can’t wait to watch :)
Thank you Zach! This video was exactly what I needed to see right now with 2 hours to go until the Grammys. I too have gotten really tired of (and honestly a little depressed about) all The Tortured Poets Department hate that continues to proliferate online. It blows my mind that even many professional writers and critics can't see the technical and creative excellence on display in this album. But thank you for your eloquent and insightful breakdown of "LOML"! It really is a masterpiece. I think this might be my favorite video you have done so far 🙂
I love this song so much. I find it very relatable because every single person had a situation where it was UNNECESSARY and it should have been buried. So when I really want to feel all the emotions I turn this on. Very excited for the video 🫶🏻
Red: “I was wronged.”
TTPD: “I was wrong.”
YES
Immediately thought this was going to be about Guilty as Sin (though maybe that's not a deep cut), but I am seated and ready to hear why I should put loml on more often!
stop this video and put it on right now. and never turn it off.

From first listen, loml was one of my favorite tracks on the record. I love a great sad piano ballad 👏🏻
So happy you agree and made a video about this amazing song 😊
Loml songwriting goes harddddd
it goes CUHHHRAZY
12 minutes in and I'm already crying. I needed this video so much you had no idea. Thank you 😭♥️
omg finally my favorite songgggg on tortured poets!!!! probably top 5 ts songs of all time. greatest song ever made truly.
also need to add: it came at such a perfect time in my life too, just as i was getting divorced and wondered if anything i knew was even real. taylor always comes through when we need her!
1 minute in and i am gasping. loml is literally my top ttpd song. the piano is so exquisite, the melodies so rich and striking. i dont have the words for just how devastating and beautiful this song is so i'll just listen to yours.
TTPD is criminally underrated. The length & the lack of big pop radio hits have caused people to think this isn’t one of her better albums. So many people just lack the patience and stillness to just sit & listen to these amazing lyrics. I love this album & respect her bravery & vulnerability.
I also really like the idea of loml being kind of deceptive at first, with the double-meaning title and the first half of the song sounding almost like she's actually singing about the love of her life, a rekindled romance that seemed fated to come true. It's only halfway into the first chorus that the disillusionment started and we started seeing the cracks that lead to their eventual downfall.
That kind of parallels with the context of the real-life relationship, in which she probably dove headfirst into thinking (misguidedly) that she had finally found the one and faced with the harsh truth not even that long into the "relationship" (if you can even call it that). The song really painted such a vivid emotional picture of how the whole thing played out from beginning to end.
The other song I'd argue for on TTPD is The Prophesy, one of her best written songs, and I think the one that is the most pointed about this feeling she keeps returning to about feeling like she's been cursed to never find love and her relationship with well the concept as a whole, it goes into the hopelessness of another relationship that failed and also reckons with the fact that maybe it won't be okay. It's also I think one of the songs on the record that reads and looks the most like poetry.
Prophecy isssssssss 🤍
I am here with you in the tortured poets department so happy to be here!!
Thank you for posting and thank you for loving Taylor!!

I loved this song even before I knew the lore, and when I learned the whole story LOML hit me even harder.
I completely agree with what you've said, it's THE song and it deserves this recognition. As well as the whole TTPD.
And your analysis is so accurate, so on point, so elegantly put, so thoughtful. Loved every second of it. P.S. I just want to add: You and your eloquence, your judgement, your erudition make me want to be a better version of myself. Thank you❤
God Zach I felt personally attacked when you said "you let yourself be conned" at 24:20
Excellent analysis. I really enjoyed watching this! Loml is as revealing as it is devastating.
I’m still obsessed with TTPD! It’s overtaken Evermore as my favorite album. (By favorite album, I mean from any artist at any time in recording history.)
I've often considered loml the one I'd choose if asked to provide to a critic Taylor's best written song.
Then I hesitate, not in doubt, but because too many lack the ability to grasp the depths & intricacies of it.
Thanks for plumbing those depths today.
"Dancing phantoms on the terrace, are they second-hand embarrassed, that I can't get out of bed, cause something counterfeit's dead" is probably my favorite line of the entire song. It's so complex and there are many interpretations and potential meanings of this:
1. - Dancing Phantoms are the fantasy projections of Taylor and Matty and the life she envisioned for them.
2. - Dancing Phantoms are the happy memories of Taylor and Matty during that very short time together when they were happy.
3. - Dancing Phantoms are Taylor and Joe and the life she gave away to follow this fantasy. Her relationship with Joe must had ended, that's for sure but they are embarrassed because she needed a lie sold to her to walk away from it, instead of leaving with honor on her own without any outside influences. Now she can't get out of bad, cause something counterfeit's dead. Both of these relationships and dreams she had our dead.
I personally think this could be a combination of the 2 muses, she sees phantoms of both of these couples and it hurts because she didn't get her happy ending with any of them.
Absolutelyyyy yes
Joe is a very particular kind of repressed posh British guy - they don't dance. I think this is all Matty
@@yorkshiregirl992 I don't know why this made scream so loud. People have this idea of Alwyn and I'm like Taylor girl, your pen needs to deconstruct him bc the slow class members aint getting it lmfao!! Thanks for the laugh. They don't dance indeed hahaha.
Yes diva! LOML has been my favorite since day one. Something about it is so gut wrenching and I think it’s one of her top songs in the discography. ❤
I was GLUED to this video from start to finish. Immaculately in tune.❤
Also, the contrast between ATW when he never called it what it was, and loml when he said she was the love of his life to her a million times and that he'd never leave then nevermind, i.e. called it love even if it never was.. 💔💔💔
LOML and Peter are genuinely the best songs on TTPD
