"you swore that you loved me, but where were the clues" actually gives me chills, because it reminds me of the bridge of Mastermind. It almost feels like Taylor has been so obsessed with little cryptic messages, that her fans expect from her, to the point that they have affected her personal life. She looks around waiting for a clue from her partner that she can decode, something to give her hope that the relationship isn't over, but the clue never comes.

My favorite lyric from ttpd is "I would've died for your sins, instead I just died inside" from tsmwel basically the whole bridge. the first time I heard this lyric, I knew it was the best bridge to ever exist. It has so much emotion and beautiful lyricism. (Also, I would love the anthology deep dive would be amazing)
A lyric parallel I just discovered this week that blew my mind is between Fortnight and Paper Rings. Paper Rings says “I want your dreary mondays” which becomes Fortnight’s “All my mornings are mondays stuck in an endless February” and that’s just devastating to me.

the fact that Taylor can come up with Easter eggs so quickly (Like the Story of us book) amazes me, people talk about how genius her lyrics are but she needs more recognition for constantly linking her new music back to her roots and acknowledging the history of her music.
true, agreed. but the US written on the book is more likely an Easter egg for her new song with Gracie Abrams called Us. she speaks about it briefly in that behind the scenes video of the music video.

I think it’s likely a reference to her collaboration with Gracie Abrams us. but she knew we would take it as a reference to the Story of Us, so it’s likely both but with the intent of dipping us into believing it was one thing but it’s actually the other
my fav lyric has to be: “And I sound like an infant feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen” bc it’s sounds as amazing as it means
Oh no! That was mine and I was about to say it’s grossly underrated. So glad someone else was as moved by that as me. It spoke to my soul with how I’ve been feeling with some in law drama. Like I have nothing more to give and that ink pen line hit me hard.
“Don’t want money, just someone who wants my company, let it once be me” The Prophecy is one of my favorite songs on this album, but also one that I struggle to listen to without crying. As a 20 year old hopeless romantic who has never been in a relationship, I feel this song so deeply. Love you Ally!! 🤍
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but on TikTok, a classical composer named Steve Hackman did a great react video where he isolated the two parts of the counterpoint at the very beginning of So Long London. The lower part of the counterpoint? It's Tolerate It. Totally blew my mind, and establishes an undeniable connection between those two songs. I've been thinking about it ever since. It's worth watching.
I love TTPD for a lot of reasons, but one of them is how radically TTPD has shifted my understanding of the songs on TS's last several albums. It's like we thought we knew what she was saying... but we didn't at all, and the puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place with TTPD. Favorite TTPD lyric? Impossible to choose, but maybe this because it's just so painfully sad.

"i hate it here so i will go to secret gardens in my mind" this song hit me so personally and devastatingly especially with the mention of "precocious child" and that being the start of this coping mechanism of detaching yourself from the now and going places in your head that you would much rather be. her mashup of this with the lakes (probably my other top favorite song) was a deeply personal blow

“My white knuckle dying grip. Holding tight to your quiet resentment…” is a line that drills into my soul. It hits so hard as a person who has had a lot of friends and partners who just would shut down if they didn’t like something or were upset by something. Trying to get that information out of them is like torture.
This line is sooooooo Tolerate it coded! 😢😢😢
“I hate it here so I will go to lunar valleys in my mind; when they found a better planet only the gentle survived”. This line is so genius and hits to close to home. On earth, the only way for animals and all organisms in the wild to survive is by survival of the fittest. They have to be the toughest versions of themselves; here, only the resilient survive. For humans, we have to act tough and sometimes can’t share our emotions because we’re scared of being vulnerable and showing ourselves to people who don’t actually love us. But in the “lunar valleys” Taylor finds on a different planet, only the gentle survive. It’s the opposite of earth. We can let our guard down there and be kind and generous, and instead of it making us look weak, it makes us stronger and more likely to survive. As someone who wants to be vulnerable with people but is scared to sometimes, this lyric immediately broke me. This whole song is definitely my fave on ttpd and this lyric especially makes me want to cry in the best way possible. Anyways, that was a lot of yapping but it means so much to me lol!

The line that just knocked the wind out of me the first time I heard it is "You didn't measure up to any measure of a man." What a lasting and devastating indictment. WOW! my jaw dropped.
I read it like the woman's rage at its peak made of desperation because she's really hurting. Trying to inflict the similar pain onto him, feel as humiliated as she feels, but also just make him feel anything, stay connected through that pain
"you said I abandoned the ship but I was going down with it" hits so personal that i don't know if it's my favorite lyric, but sure is on the top
The lyric I love the most is "If the glint in my eye traced the depths of your sigh down that passage in time back to the moment I crashed into you like so many wrecks do too impaired by my youth to know what to do". Also I love this video, Ally 🤍
“Rivulets descend my plastic smile” i think is a great lyric. I love the imagery of keeping your face perfectly pleasant, but the tears just bore down til you’re left with a permanent deformity. I swear im not traumatized 😂

Florida, as an American, I regularly hear/see it as a few places:
1) that "old people" go for retirement
2) criminals go to because it's easy to get out of the country, escape gov and get to places in the Caribbean. Especially if they have external banks and assets.
3) Florida Man incidents
4) More recently, Questionable Government oversight/overstepping
You turned me into an idea of sorts/ you needed my but you needed drugs more😭, the lyric always hits hard
In Clara bow "You look like Taylor Swift in this light we're loving it you've got edge she never did" because my great grandma passed recently and everyone says that we acted and looked simliar!!
This might be a bit long but one of the things I like most about TTPD and the title itself is that it invites this idea of sophistication of her poetry and she allows us to think that in the first song but then by the second song of the album (the title track no less) she’s like no, nuh uh. She’s making fun of the whole concept itself. But then she continues to bare her soul out throughout the album, showing us she’s tortured but also having told us that she’s not a poet. And then this takes a full 180 with The Anthology because those ARE the most poetic, and crafted songs ever. So she just spun us around our heels with that. Probably my favourite thing about TTPD and the fact that that was specifically the title of the album.
100% agree. The whole album is against pretentiousness and romanticism. Whether it's poking fun at herself and her relationship in the title track, pointing out the audacity of the media or the fans presuming to know what's best for her based on gossip, or the dangers of romanticizing reality of the past. In any case, the album points out the problems with taking things too seriously and ignoring the simple truths of reality. Like, ignoring red flags in relationships for some imagined future, or fans ignoring the fact that celebrities are strangers that owe you nothing. I could go on and on but it's a background theme of the whole album. I love that she is in a phase where she is finally recognizing that simplicity and grounding yourself in reality is often the key to true happiness. The overly romantic tortured poet trope that she was so drawn to for years is a ride straight to misery. That's why her happiest tracks are about not overthinking things and enjoying simple joys of love.
Down Bad is now one of my favourites from the album and I remember hearing it for the first time and instantly connecting the line "how dare you think it's romantic leaving me safe and stranded" to New Romantics. I was so proud of myself as a new swiftie to be able to do such a connection. It's so cool to see how these two eras connect and how Taylor has changed since.
"and I'll forget you but I'll never forgive, the smallest man who ever lived." genuinely silences me every time I listen to it. as someone who had one of the worst senior years of high school, the motif that no, you do not actually have to forgive someone to move on stood out to me. once you go through a tough trauma either through family, religion, or a relationship, we are often taught to forgive and forget. this can make us want to force emotions such as forgiveness and kindness no matter what wrongdoing they have done to us. this line is such a good reminder that even though, especially as a woman, you never forgive someone, you can still be yourself and heal. this past winter, I hit the hardest rock bottom that I have ever felt. I found unhealthy coping mechanisms, and often masked what I was going through for either the comfort of others or myself. it felt so much easier to just pretend that I forgave the people who put me here. I had always been fed that I could only TRULY move on once I found "forgiveness" in my heart. this is SO untrue. months later, I still have my bad days, but they are more manageable. how? I did not forgive. I felt all of my emotions in their true form unabashedly. back to the song- I loved that she mentioned that he is so insignificant to her, so unforgivable, that she will NEVER forgive him... but she forgets about him due to this. she moved on, found her peace. but trust her... that peace did not come from him. she had to make her own peace. and that is what is so beautiful and haunting about this line. if you read this far thank you and you are worth it ♥♥
My favorite lyric is most definitely “looking backwards might be the only way to move forward”
if that doesn’t sum up Taylor’s entire discography, career, moral compass, everything she’s ever done, idk what does. And I can’t help but feel like she’s moving past that philosophy and realizing that sometimes ruminating on the past is not the way the move forward, or that she’s done that enough to really finally heal and let go of it all now. Very healing!!

I have actually been using this as my discord status for two months straight at this point. (Closest I can get to my AOL status haha) I know it's not the main album, but I Hate It Here has really, really resinated with me, and just hits my heart in a way that very few songs ever have. I have read/wrote so much, played video games, watched movies all my life to immerse myseves in these stories and worlds. I don't know how to explain it, but listening to the song just makes me feel like my inner child is being hugged.

Another cool thing about “But Daddy I Love Him” the line “the elders had convened down at the city hall” going along with all the religious motifs, Elders in the church are leaders in the church.
It breaks my heart that this album reveals how much hurt she might’ve received from Christians. 😢

MY lyrics are “I choose you and me, religiously”, the idea that she feels this love where she would choose him in every single line and in every situation sounds like the most beautiful tangible feeling, or “You don’t get to tell me about sad” because I’ve experienced people telling me I don’t know what it means to be sad and I know what it feels like to be told that and her not only saying she knows what it’s like but proving she’s more than those words is so powerful to me :)
My favorite line is: “So I did my best to lay to rest all of the bodies that ever been on body and in my mind they sink into the swamp”

I genuinely cannot pick a favorite lyric. But the most relatable to me personally would be the entire bridge of the smallest man who ever lived. "Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? Were you writing a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy? In 50 years will all of this be declassified? And you'll confess why you did it..."
I experienced the exact same thing she's describing. I was dating a girl who had promised me a future, who I had a very intense connection with right away, and then suddenly, she ghosted me. I found out through an Instagram post that it was because she started dating a guy, and didn't bother telling me. Those were the exact feelings I had. Just, "why?" Did she plan it? What was the point of making me fall so hard, if she was just going to break my heart? Taylor managed to put those feelings into words when I couldn't❤
(Btw I'm totally fine now, been with the man I'm going to marry for about 4 years now, it was just a very difficult thing to go through when I was 18 and that was the closest I had felt to love at the time).

To me, it's like you gave your all for this relationship, it was a valiant effort, it was stunning how this person promised to fight for you and your love. But the moment it all ends, it's as if you gave everything only to end up with nothing and he's just.. gone. I personally relate to this and it's just absolutely gut-wrenching 😢
"You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days" is my favourite lyric. The way she sings it makes me tear up every single time!

i love in peter when she says "tell me all that you'd learned, because love's never lost when perspective is earned" !!! that entire bridge is so devastating to me because she wanted to be with him so badly and he left to "find perspective" but didn't come back, and so she was heartbroken :( taylor is really a lyrical genius
I told my dad that I was watching a deep dive of a taylor album and he asked how she knows everything and I was like well she’s like ten times smarter than other swifties.
It’s crazy how Ally expects me to choose ONE lyric but one of my favs for sure is “is it a wonder I broke? Let’s hear one more joke” because for me it represents how if someone’s talking bad about they will just call it a joke and not care if they hurt your feelings. LOVE the video it’s crazy how much you know Ally❤️
My favourite lyric from tortured poets has to be “cause love’s never lost when perspective is earned” I think that’s such a beautiful way of viewing love and loss instead of thinking of an ex as wasted time or lost love, and in the context of Peter I just adds another layer of tragedy to the story. Peter is my favourite song from the entire album and I remember the first time I heard the bridge, some of Taylor’s best work imo and the parallels back to cardigan are everything! Btw thank you Ally for making the best videos and teaching me everything I need to know🫡🥰

It such a heartbreaking lyric showcasing how she thought they could have had everything, it reveals her hidden desire to be a mother and a wife. she is such a high profile figure but these qualities are important to her but he didn't want it with her

"I'm just mad as hell cause I loved this place for so long, London." Just the agony in her voice, it resonates with my own sadness of losing beloved places and relationships. That song is my favorite on the album.
it’s too hard to choose a favorite lyric but I love So Long London and I love the lyric “I’m just mad as hell cause I loved this place for so long london” because It makes me think of how when you lose a relationship you aren’t always just losing the person you’re losing other people like their family and places that you went together. thank you so so much for this video it helps understand the album sooo much 🫶🫶

Some lyrics that completely caught me off guard on TTPD are from one of my top 3 songs, Clara Bow.
“You look like Stevie Nicks in ‘75, the hair and lips / Crowd goes wild at her fingertips / Half moon shine, a full eclipse.”
I remember listening to the album, the moment it came out, and when I reached Clara Bow and heard the Stevie Nicks line, I was in disbelief of how Taylor brought Stevie into her catalog. I will see them both within one week, on the 16th and 19th of July, and really felt a full circle moment.
Stevie, like Taylor, is really such a comfort to me, and I view her music as tiny manifestations of 70s/80s/90s nostalgia in my life.
But if I had to choose the lines that resonate with me the most, it would be the end of the song:
“You look like Taylor Swift in this light, we’re loving it / You’ve got edge, she never did / The future’s bright, dazzling”
I recall how I sat in my bed, crying when I heard her say that, as originally, before reading into the lyrics, it felt like Taylor speaking to me, the listener, and how there are so many young women after her who celebrate her legacy, and while she did never have edge, every one of those girls brings something different “to the table”, making them unique. However, now I know better about her intention with the song, but I like to think of the song that way sometimes. As a celebration of female accomplishments.

43:43 The fairy lights through the mist line has always reminded me of fairytale stories where you’re not supposed to follow the lights in foggy places or they’ll lead you astray to where you could be captured or hurt. As in like “I saw those lights that I thought were leading me astray, but I kept carrying us through this thinking I was going in the right direction” sort of thing.
51:00 I know Sweet Nothing has ended up being a big red flag song given the situation she was in when she wrote it, but I still love the sentiment of like “all these people out in the world have these big expectations of me to Do More and Be More but you just want me for being me and not for these external things”. It hits for me as someone who is disabled and lives a very small life, and whose partner has stayed even when I can’t go off and do cool career things or whatever else other people think I should be trying to do.

in my boy only breaks his favorite toys when she says “but first, pull the string and ill tell you that he runs because he loves me” and then a doll voice repeats “he loves me” is INSANE to me bc thats such a genius way of representing it, he was neglecting her and making her feel rejected but she kept finding ways of justifying that by repeating it to herself (and she also says before that “i know im just repeating myself”) which is incredibly sad.

From the Anthology, I hate it here is my favorite song, probably my favorite song by Taylor ever. "I hate it here so I will go to, secret gardens in my mind." I have never heard something more relatable. When I listened this song for the first time, I felt like Taylor describes my feelings exactly and understands me.
