One of my favourite directors. I hope that before I die I will be able to attend all the screenings of a retrospective of his films at my local cinematheque. Same for Cassavetes, and Carax, and Wong, and Lynch, and Pialat, and Kiarostami, and Malick, and Akerman, and Tsai, and Tati, and Brakhage, and Bresson, and... and...

      You have impeccable taste!
Some directors I like in no particular order: Ozu, Tati, Bresson, Dreyer, Kiarostami, Hou, Keaton, Marker, Rossellini, Godard, Rivette, etc...

      @@HP_____ So do you, comrade!
I have not seen a film in a theatre since 2019 but I recently bought a ticket to see Carax's "Annette" on Wednesday on a big screen in a cinema! :)

Maybe my favorite film score of all time, definitely one of my favorite films. Hou’s work from this decade is criminally hard to find in high quality versions; I whooped aloud when I read Criterion was releasing this.

I am putting together a Hou Hsiao-Hsien playlist here: th-cam.com/video/H2di83WAOhU/w-d-xo.html
Please suggest any other gems from his films, that you find here.

      Thanks for the playlist!
What is your favorite HHH film?
I love so many of them, and there are a few of his earlier films that I still haven't seen, but my personal fav is 'Three Times'.

@@bluehejira I am in such an awe of his filmography that I cannot select one favorite. Whichever one I have watched recently, becomes my favorite HHH film, so now it's Flowers of Shaghai! In retrospect, I guess I will choose Three Times partly because it harkens back to his other works and partly because how impossibly pleasurable it is, in both visual & sonic departments, not to undermine the fantastic performances. I am trying so hard to find good prints of his 90s films, and it's just infuriating how Millennium Mambo OST recently got blocked in TH-cam US and many of his soundtracks aren't available either...

As much as I like HHH and I think the music is perfect for the film, I was struck by this … reasonable similarity … coincidence, or … merely plagiarism ? this is David Behrman, Interspecies small talk, from, 1984, released in vinyl in1991; from Behrman's website: "Merce Cunningham commissioned him to compose music for Walkaround Time in 1968, Rebus in 1976, Pictures in 1984 […]. Pictures, with its music, "Interspecies Smalltalk," won the Lawrence Olivier Award in 1985" hear it: th-cam.com/video/tDC5AoBa7uM/w-d-xo.html

It's not exactly the same but it does sound alike, I agree.

Nah. I don't hear enough resemblance to say "plagiarism." Maybe some influence, but even that I'm doubtful about. Similar style and similar instrumentation at some points, that's all.
