I met my now ex wife in the DR back in 2000 when I went for vacation in Cabarete. She was just finishing med school and my good friend had married her twin 2 years before. The problem with marrying someone from the DR is not who they are but the unspoken familial expectations and deep cultural differences. If you marry someone under your economic level....which will be just about everyone in Boca Chica, you will be expected to send the family money each month. Want to visit the family for Christmas? You can not show up empty handed.....expect to buy tons of stuff in the US/Europe before you go. People are real picky....at least my exes family was. I could never get over how ungrateful they were for gifts that didn't live up to their expectations. I speak fluent Spanish and have lived in lots of places in South America but the Dominican culture is distinct...however culturally understanding, empathic, experienced you may think you are....(and you may be) the DR romance is very very complex. When the infatuation stage is over ,,,,it gets very very complicated. I'm middle class, but there was no way t my wife or her family could accept that I was not 'rico" rich. They expected that I would help out more:(an addition to their house, trips to Costco, lots of lechon at christmas....whatever I did, it was never enough). This caused lots of tension between me/my wife/her family. We got an F1 visa early on and she came to the US a year after finishing her pasantia (medical internship) ...and my family accepted her with open/loving arms.......But she saw all the "wealth" of my family here and wondered why they didn't just buy me a new car, a bigger home or send $ to her family in the DR. Low income Dominicans communalize thier money, but in the US we are expected to make our own way. The wealthiest family member isn't expected to distribute $ to those who have less. Each system is different ...one is not better than the other but they are in direct opposition. I did send money to her family each month and a bit extra at Christmas but again....she was disappointed because it was not more. She wondered why I didn't borrow some money from my wealthy brother and send it down there. The rift between her expectations and my choice not to bend to her pressure broke the marriage. After 7 1/2 yrs I filed for divorce.....but I don't regret anything, I got two happy amazing beautiful well adjusted children that live with me (she got remarried) and I learned a lot of good lessons. Dominican people are not bad in any way shape or form, but the economic/power differential European/American + the complicated socia-economic expectations that foreigners can't grasp in my opinion make a contented functional marriage nearly impossible.
Yes there were good parts but very few far and between. What true is that growing up poor in the DR is a really traumatic experience that all the love, empathy, and understanding can not conquer. Females especially have it hard there. The things I found out my ex had to do just to finish out her medical degree and get an internship were humiliating. Once she did got her internshhip, she was a "real doctor" the whole family (cousins too) converged on her for money and help. She made only $550 a month and that was with overtime. Young men have huge struggles....most young men grow up with out a solid father figure. Men as a rule play around sexually and get random women pregnant and rarely do thier part to bring them up. I saw it all the time.
There are Dominicans that are rich or upper middle-class that tend to be of Spanish, Italian or Lebanese origin that would NOT expect you to buy them anything. There are also middle class Dominicans with a sense of shame and self-awareness, who wouldn't expect handouts. Yes, they are 15-20% of the population but they exist. We are not all like your ex wife's "classy" family.😉🙄🤭

It`s not about only love . They feel very lonely in their country because they don`t have anyone for love. Those people who start family and have kids and grandkids not feel very lonely. They enjoy their lives. But those people don`t have family they have to do this kind of thing. Everyone should start family to avoid this kind of things and become happy.

I have a friend with a guy in the DR. A couple of them, actually, but this particular one, she sees every time. She's paid his rent, bought him a scooter, got him into hotels, filled up his gas tank, paid for medication for his family members, paid for vet care for his dog, bought him working animals so he can make money with the tourists, got him into dance clubs... He's like 20 years younger than she is. I think it's insane. When you're a tourist in the DR, the guys aren't interested in you because they love you; they just know you have money.

My nephew went to Dominican Republic to marry a girl but it happened she was a "professional" before marriage and a gold digger after. Many people told him it was a mistake because he did not know anything about the girl and now she divorced him, of course, because he was not "providing" enough to support everybody in Dominican Republic. Well, he is now a retired police officer and she kept half his pension. She knew right from the beginning how to play the game and she knew when it was time to go. She was very well trained about her plan like having a child and demanding child support. 99.9% of those women are gold diggers and stupid the man who believes they "love" him. DR is wild!!! On my first day during my visit, I was approached by several beautiful girls in Boca Chica, while just walking around taking in the sights. Some Dominican, and some Haitian. They knew I was a foreigner and made their moves quickly. I was worn out by the third day. Some foreign women also approached me, but as soon as they discovered I was not a local, they lost interest.
I’m a black male with naturally curly hair so I kinda look different. Straight out of high school into the marines I was stationed in a place similar. Country boy from the south so I don’t know much. Went to the beach with my boys and you wouldn’t believe the number of older women that approached me as if I was for sale. Some would run their hands through my hair or down my chest. These guys aren’t the predators… believe me
What these women need to understand is that the man they are with is on the clock, he is working when he is with you, being with you is his job. You cannot compare him to your ex.

As a Dominican I say that: the majority of tourists who go to Boca Chica are middle class people who are looking for an economical way to have fun, not all of them are looking for sex, tourists visit us who want the heat of the Caribbean, we have places at another level where prostitution doesn't come, but those are for professionals who just want to have a good time. I live in Northeast in Brazil, lots of beachs here, lots of tourists too. Met a swiss woman one time, she was with her friends, they all looking for the famous stereotype "hot brazilian guys". I'm note all in that stereotype, i go to the gym 4 times a week but i have a high education degree and can talk in english and spanish. In the first night that we sleep together i remenber her surprise when i not accepted the money that she suposed to give me, cause i'm not a male prostitute. We continued to see each other for the next days she stayed here, i really like her and she shown that she really liked me, we talked a lot and the tune between us was great. in 2005 my Mother, at the age of 57 went to the Dominican Republic for two weeks with a friend. I never thought anything of it. But now that I have seen this TH-cam video and seen that it is full of beach and black men, it has me wondering a few things.
I knew two redheads who went to the Caribbean on a regular basis looking for "love" like these French women. They would show pictures of their "boyfriends" the two met on vacation. Six months later they would be back meeting another love interest.

What they are doing might not be the smartest thing, but sometimes you have no control over who you fall in love/lust with. When I was in my late 20's I was looking for a wife to settle down with. I would meet these women that checked all of the boxes. Attractive, financially stable etc.. Yet, nothing would come of it after all was said and done. Just no chemistry between us. I learned the hard way that love is not a strategic decision to make. It happens or it doesn't. Some people will never find it or experience it, because they don't want to open up and let the chips fall where they may. These women are ones that followed their hearts and took a leap of faith. Even though it is likely to fail, they tried. From our perspective the men they choose are desperately poor with nothing to offer. Yet, they probably make the women feel a way that men in their own country don't. I don't think it is all about sex either. Even if the sexual stereotypes of black men are true, the women could have looked for black men in Europe, right? It would have been easier for the 30 year old Italian to find an older black man living in Italy, who speaks fluent Italian and is familiar with the culture. She did'nt!
this still happens alot today. I accidentally discovered a society of older, rich white women who go to predominantly black & arabic countries to find "toy boys". Im a black guy and back when I was like 18 - 19 yos I met an older white woman who told me about this world. Dominican people are not bad in any way shape or form, but the economic/power differential European/American + the complicated socia-economic expectations that foreigners can't grasp in my opinion make a contented functional marriage nearly impossible.

Yes there were good parts but very few far and between. What true is that growing up poor in the DR is a really traumatic experience that all the love, empathy, and understanding can not conquer. Females especially have it hard there. The things I found out my ex had to do just to finish out her medical degree and get an internship were humiliating. Once she did got her internshhip, she was a "real doctor" the whole family (cousins too) converged on her for money and help.
She made only $550 a month and that was with overtime. Young men have huge struggles....most young men grow up with out a solid father figure. Men as a rule play around sexually and get random women pregnant and rarely do thier part to bring them up. I saw it all the time.
There are Dominicans that are rich or upper middle-class that tend to be of Spanish, Italian or Lebanese origin that would NOT expect you to buy them anything. There are also middle class Dominicans with a sense of shame and self-awareness, who wouldn't expect handouts.

My nephew went to Dominican Republic to marry a girl but it happened she was a "professional" before marriage and a gold digger after. Many people told him it was a mistake because he did not know anything about the girl and now she divorced him, of course, because he was not "providing" enough to support everybody in Dominican Republic. Well, he is now a retired police officer and she kept half his pension. She knew right from the beginning how to play the game and she knew when it was time to go. She was very well trained about her plan like having a child and demanding child support. 99.9% of those women are gold diggers and stupid the man who believes they "love" him. DR is wild!!! On my first day during my visit, I was approached by several beautiful girls in Boca Chica, while just walking around taking in the sights. Some Dominican, and some Haitian. I would meet these women that checked all of the boxes. Attractive, financially stable etc.. Yet, nothing would come of it after all was said and done. Just no chemistry between us. I learned the hard way that love is not a strategic decision to make. It happens or it doesn't. Some people will never find it or experience it, because they don't want to open up and let the chips fall where they may. These women are ones that followed their hearts and took a leap of faith. Even though it is likely to fail, they tried. From our perspective the men they choose are desperately poor with nothing to offer. Yet, they probably make the women feel a way that men in their own country don't. I don't think it is all about sex either. Even if the sexual stereotypes of black men are true, the women could have looked for black men in Europe, right? It would have been easier for the 30 year old Italian to find an older black man living in Italy, who speaks fluent Italian and is familiar with the culture. She did'nt!
