Fantastic video Jeff. Next level manuals. I agree though, sub 15mph tech is where bikes like this shine. I'm also not a huge fan of coil forks on hardtails, and these long slack hardtails are a handful to jump. Excellent experiment, riding, and analysis as always.

I'm a bit late to the party (see what I did there?!) but I ride a Suntour Zeron coil fork on a Ragley Big Al and I love the feel. Granted I've never owned an air fork better than a Rockshox Recon but still, this rides much better than that! Most of my trails are slow and techy (Smithfield Cairns) but I do a fair bit of flow trail too.

    • @stanner9474

In some ways it always will be. It's like driving a Mazda Miata, an Adult go-kart that isn't fast and it can't hang with a Porsche or 'vette in the curves but it's crazy fun in it's own right. Like that feeling you get every now and then when you're mellow inside and move to the far right to drive 55 while you totally relax watching the rest of the crazy stressed world fly by. There are times when slow, mellow, light, simple & highly-challenged are required for their own form of pure & simple enjoyment, different and probably much less than the present ''Normal'' but needed for the full appreciation of the new.
Hey Jeff, Bruh - you better begin *_now_* to nip it in the bud, Bud, or you're going to be 55, sitting in your recliner, 65lbs overweight wondering what happened. I got there but now I'm on my way back.
Now I take that full plate of delicious dinner, look at it for a few seconds realizing that's what's helping to keep me mid-section-plump, then take my fork and slide about 1/3 to 1/2 back into the pan, take more time between bites - and find I don't miss it/didn't need it, that other 1500 calories. Oh I still enjoy my Haagen-Dazs, but 1/2 as much, and I have kicked up the exercise level too, but I don't think you'd have to worry about *_that_* - lol

I have a Rootdown -- full 29er with a 150mm Lyrik. Great bike in the PNW tech stuff....not as great in the buffed bike parky stuff. But I think an air fork is the way to go on a HT frame for the extra pop. Just one man's opinion, however. Ride whatever makes you smile!

Thanks for making this video. I was thinking about trying to make my stylus mullet setup just to get the stack slightly higher, but maybe I'll hold off. I agree that it feels at home at slower speeds on techy stuff. It's not the most compliant of hard tails, you can certainly feel it when you jump off curbs compared to other bikes.

Hey Jeff- how about a 27.5 x 2.8, say Assegai, up front and a 27.5 x 2.3, say Aggressor out back. When I measured my 27.5 x 2.5 vs a 29 x 2.3 (both DHFs) there was only a half inch difference in diameter. So the wider tire with consequently higher sidewall made up 1 in out of a 1.5 inch difference in diameter. Link below. So 2.8 front vs 2.3 rear on same diameter rim should give you a decent height difference front to back, amazing front grip with a bit of a playful rearend, yet maybe not feel so unbalanced on jumps? Or a 2.6 front and 2.3 rear? This is in essence what we used to do back in the 80s on our bmx bikes with 20s. Also love to see you demo the new Santa Crus Bronson MX and Chameleon MX. Be great to get your thoughts on the MX set up on a bike designed specifically for it. Anyway, always a joy to watch you ride- you still ride like a 15 yo (by which I mean with just pure joy and fun) which is what Im still striving to continue doing at 50, albeit with a lot lesser skill. Lol. 🤙 th-cam.com/video/JGRTkY49imQ/w-d-xo.html

I know this is overkill but, on the glove topic, I wear Fox Dirtpaws. I know they're motorcycle gloves but they're dirt cheap and mtb gloves don't offer any real protection- they're like spandex for your hands. I had a pair sitting at home when I went down super hard on asphalt and tore an adductor and flexor in my left hand- still affects my guitar playing, 4 years later. Never ride without them, now....🙄
