The reason he said "Last week she died" is because for a joke to work it often needs to be a surprising punch line. It was the best way to get a laugh.
In love, as in all of life, the thing that ruins most things is expectations. Anything good becomes bad because it wasn't great. Nice things suck because they aren't spectacular. 11:28 What ur saying reminds me of this song from Tim Minchin (Similar comedian to Bo) called "You grew on me" where he talks about this exact thhing!!
The thing you said about "Love at first sight" very much resonates with Tim Minchin's "You Grew On Me" song. I know you are doing Make Happy right now, but I think you should put that song to the list.
I think the beginning bit is about, like the rest of this show, trying to subvert expectations as much as possible. But that’s just my take, I’m not entirely sure 😂

I love Bo and this song is sweet but I think the line I agree with most is the last one about his age. Patriarchy is not an even playing field and, while I admit there are some young women with unrealistic dreams of what love will be, women are more trained to NEED more then anything not to be alone. Bo’s song “repeat stuff” speaks to this well. Women settle IN MASS for men who not only provide little work in the house and the relationship but even abuse or kill them and these women are trained to keep loving him and lower expectations constantly. Many men grow up seeing a perfect girl is promised to him to be his therapist and mom and sex doll and when he doesn’t get this - well, that’s where incel culture comes from. I am, of course, speaking in extremes and there are a lot of people in the middle of those margins - but nothing is an even comparison within patriarchy.
I saw this line about girl dying more like a reference to the fact that some women try to live up to expectations of men so much that they end up duying in the process. Like by plastic surgeries, injections and all that stuff. For me it also shows that expactations of men for women are so high that no one can live up to them without dying. Also noted how Bo sang "lower your expectations A FEW" for women and "lower your expectations A LOT" for men Thanks for the vid~
Well it was just a simple "set up, pay off, set up, subvert" comedy structure, but I mean, Bo is also correct in saying that, with billions of people in the planet, odds are there _is_ someone out there who ends up fitting every little crazy criteria someone makes up for their perfect partner... Odds are that person lived about 200 years ago on a whole different part of the planet but hey, they existed, kudos... There will never be another just like them, stop looking for perfection and lower your expectations. That's how I took the "last week, she died"
When he said "But last week she died", I don't think he's saying that men have lower expectations for women (if anything, it's the other way around), but is rather making a comment on (domestic) violence against women.
My bar was set at "Tries to remember my name at least 50% of the time" and I still had to make exceptions. Yeahhhh, haven't dated in years and have no plans to go back, haha.
I can't wait till you get to one specific song in this special lol. also for the last song definitely record your reaction to the bits before it, the whole last twenty or so minutes of this special is fantastic
Honestly don't think he was saying guys expectations are closer to reality, I think he just did the 'last week, she died' for the misdirection laugh since it's live performance
I remember watching this special right when it came out and I might just be misremembering now after so many years, but I believe the line "she's real, but last week, she died" actually referred quite literally to a real person who died not long before the special was filmed. It was some porn star or a famous actress and it was recent news, which was why the audience reacted the way they did because they knew who he was talking about. That being said I've spent like 30 minutes now just going through obituaries trying to figure out who it was and I can't seem to find it so I could just be making this up or it would be weird nobody else remembers. Bo was a lot edgier though back then and he was a kid so a lot of what he wrote for specials like what and make happy really were just simply for shock value.
when you think of love i only come to a simple explanation, love is(in like love for another person) wanting the hapiness of someone even if that means you will not be happy., thats when love is true, when you stop thinking of yourself for the other person.
You hit it spot on basically man. Idk what's wrong with all the people saying read too much into it or whatever, that's his whole scheme is trying too wake people up n all they want to do is laugh and whatever, it's depressing...
I don’t believe love is actually painful. I see it as high risk/high reward. You can’t experience love without opening yourself up to be vulnerable. Like obviously you are less likely to experience pain from external forces if you just stay home alone, but there is a hard ceiling on joy with that. Love involves a certain willful loss of control over what happens next because there is more than just your input.
@@Matthiass721I don’t disagree with what you describe, but I’m getting at the feeling of being attached to someone. It hurts to care, much as it hurts to be alive and not numb. I suppose a person has to be sensitive enough to feel the sweet pain. Grief, as an example, is evidence of having cared. Nothing lasts forever and doing relational work is hard and often painful. Worth it, but not simple or easy.
love is all about taking big risks. it's risky to care about someone, to open up to someone, but you need all of those things for love. it shows that you trust them a lot, that you really want to work something out with them. it can go wrong very easily, and then you experience some of the worst pain you can feel, but it's all worth it in hopes that it goes right
The way I interpret "she's real but last week she died" is that culturally, we've moved away from how things used to be in the past, where women were more blatantly oppressed than they are today, and during those past, more patriarchal times maybe the reality of having a wife aligned more closely to what Bo describes as guys' expectations in the song, but in today's age we have become more progressive and women have more freedom and agency in their lives, so guys are fooling themselves by holding those outdated expectations and not actualizing with the times. I could be reading way too deeply into it, since some people are saying it was just a funny line to subvert our expectations in the hook, but it could also be both imo. edit: at least in the USA. I know in other countries the patriarchal culture is still very real to this day.
Then I found the fairy tale cuz I've been with my man for 20 yrs and we still are very best friends and we laugh our asses off together. Wow. Didn't realize it was that rare.
I'm pretty sure the line at the end was just him doing what he talked about in Unpaid Intern. In order to defend himself from criticism he does it first. That criticism being as a 25 year he's making all these grandiose claims about relationships and expectations when he is still fairly young and hasn't experienced as much.
I think the I'm only 25 line is part of Bo being self conscious about coming off pretentious. He really is brilliant, well beyond his years. He often mentions that he's young so he he may not know what he's talking about, even though he certainly seems to
Chris, in Bo earliest content as a high-schooler in his bedroom he wrote and sang alot about how his family and people at school thought he was gay. And throughout those year he wrote more about it. To this day, he will still write bits that poke at the people who thought he was gay when he's not. I recommend watching "my whole family" uploaded 15 years ago. It's on his TH-cam. 😃 this is in regards to you saying that you weren't quite sure where Bo was coming from on the gay bit at the beginning.
i really liked your comment on love and your bo burnham reactions are on point, i love how introspective they are. here's my suggestion for reaction: scottish comedian daniel sloss, he isnt a musical comedian, but his specials are really good in my opinion, with lots of jokes, but lots of things to be discused. there's two on netflix "dark" and "jigsaw" and one on hbo "x".
Yeah not every man has lower expectations than women. People are all different but it's that we all have high expectations in love. I've seen some chick's who will put up with a man who abuses her & dudes who genuinely want a girl that will stay hot forever, so we know it's not that only girls have higher unfair expectations of men. Bo was speaking about ALL of us. And in couples therapy you will find that we all have imperfections to work on & compromise with your partner.
This song was like 8 years ago, nowadays it's the women who would have to lower their expectations a lot, while the men are just sitting there confused, contemplating if banging the new 37th gender that came out last week is considered gay, straight, or a new sexual orientation.
I can't believe there's any way that Bo meant men have more realistic expectations than women do with his second verse, I'm pretty certain it was just classic misdirection for a laugh. And I love your analyses (I've binged like all your Bo reactions, great work!) but I also have to disagree with the bit about women 'misunderstanding' men as being sexual. I don't think we misunderstand it, it's just something we HAVE to be privy to, that we HAVE to assume, as women. OF COURSE not all men are inherently sexual, and it IS a harmful stereotype - one rooted in patriarchal norms. But the fundamental sexualization of women in almost every area of life is so indicative that men, on an institutional level NOT on an individual one, are sexual. Almost every iconic female character in media - even children's media - have been sexualized in some capacity. The fetishization of female-dominated occupations (nurses, secretaries, etc.). The sexualization of wlw. We don't 'assume' men are sexual out of naiveté, but because for the most part with men, we have to operate under an ulterior-motives-until-proven-otherwise type deal. Just my thoughts!
A compilation of Chris's singing in this channel so far would amount to: 🎵 Go to bed, go to bed… in your mind🎵.😁 I'm excited for the next song, the "problem solving song" as a reactor called it thinking he could get in trouble with TH-cam if he used the actual name of the track. (He might not be entirely wrong though: my comments recommending it got automatically censored…🤔🙄)
I think that the line “but last week she died” could potentially have a much darker meaning. In trying to pursue my idea of what “thin” is, and what men find attractive, I almost died because I was losing weight too rapidly. Weight insecurities are extremely prevalent among women, and having anorexia increases the risk of suicide exponentially.
So, I'm extremely lucky. To quote someone "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one." I married my best friend while I was in the military to get paid more. When I got out we figured it can't get any more serious than married so lets give this a shot. We've been married for 12 years now, hardly ever fight (each other, her family is fucking crazy though) and we beat the doctors who said she couldn't have kids. Our son is about to turn 5 in December. This not even mentioning the crazy coincidences that led to us meeting in the first place. I was evacuated from Katrina and she fled South Carolina to get away from her family. We sat down in cricket customer service training. I looked over and saw her drawing a hatchet man and said "Hey, my girlfriend is a lette, you wanna smoke after work." My wife and my gf from that time still talk to this day. I do tell her we have a movie relationship because it's so rare and crazy. Idk why I felt like sharing this but here it is. 😅🤗
i think the explanation for "last week she died" is not that men have less expectation on women (obviously not), but that women expectations in general are considered delusional while men expectations on women is basically a pressure from a whole entire society, since we are kids we learn to please man, that we should know how to cook, clean for or husband, to always look beautiful in the outside no matter what it takes, so what bo is describing is something we face everyday, so that's why she "die", this women die trying to achieve man/society expectations.
If you see this I’d wonder if you’d react to or just watch in your free time “grew on me” by Tim minchin . I think it conveys your thoughts on love fairly well
I think "she's real, but last week she died" was referring to women's empowerment, cuz in our century they can not try so hard to fulfill men's desires
I'm fairly certain "She's real, but last week she died." is just a throwaway line for shock value, but if you were to try and read a deeper meaning into it I think it makes more sense that it's less about men having "more realistic expectations" and more that both men and women have completely unrealistic expectations for each other, but women are more societally pressured to meant those impossible standards than men are.
I sorta see love as a blurring boundary along your sense of self as you grow together with someone. There’s an acceptance and a sense of vulnerability that’s rewarded with a warm feeling of being more than just yourself. It’s beautiful but messy. I think it’s low key more toxic than most admit, but only because I think our culture is so anti-social that the fear of that bond ending and never finding a new one causes us to cling to what we have past the point where it should’ve ended, even if that’s ultimately worse for us. Idk what the solution is tho.
Personally, I always thought of it as the men's expectations of women exist, but those women are desperate enough to change themselves and it's usually a dangerous life of abuse or addiction that they live or something else that might cause them to live a short life. Either that, or he just changed it up to catch people off guard and make the punch funny again.
"Last week she died" Making news headlines in the crime section!!!! only way in which many men would actually pay attention to worthy women who are everything they want/need but get dissed because of some list-item missing. By the time they notice them, it's extremely late or just late. Metaphorically: That exact girl used to exist but she "died" because she changed after being told she was never enough or exactly what someone else needed or thought they wanted.
I don't believe in love at first sight or soul mates. Love is a lot of work and communication. I'm quite a bit older than you and have yet to find someone who's able to do that in a HEALTHY way, but that does exist. I've seen people close to me have it. It's out there.
Sometime's a joke is just a joke my dude, doesn't ALWAYS have a deep meaning. "Last week, she died" is just funny because we were set up with one thing and given another that's completely different. Don't look too far into that one lol
The people who are trying to make it out to be a competition about who has more realistic expectations really missed the point of this song and are just trying to cope with their own negative traits by directing attention at other people. Saying "I have unrealistic expectations, but that guy is worse than me" doesn't redeem you in any way. The point is that there's value in loving and being loved, not whether it's unfair that certain men expect you to be a nympho model while you're "only" expecting them to be able to read your mind, be a simp and be born rich.
I've been enjoying consuming the content produced by your reaction to Bos content. But of course, there exists the possibility that the exquisiteness of your reactions is due to the rabid, wild speculation that YOU ARE ACTUALLY BO THEMSELVES!! Wait, I'm quite drunk at the moment. So there's a 28% chance that I am being preposterous right now. I was born in nineteen-nintey and have been a fan, and thusly observed the maturation of the internet at a similar pace since, but, the advantage of a more distant perspective, ... Oh no! It's happening again. I focused too intensely on something. Oh , that's some nice punctuation that the current iteration of Google speech-to-text felt like including. Doesn't any of this matter ... internally?
I think sometimes you’re looking too deep into it. The dick joke with the urinal was just a dick joke, and I think the lyric change in “you’re right” and “last week she died” is just a comedic misdirection. Bo likes his deeper meanings but they’re not EVERYWHERE
Why yall acting like theres only one answer or enterpretation for any specific line. Everyone is going to pull the lesson they relate to or need to learn and its not always going to be the same thing you got
Nobody: Me a lesbian watching this full well knowing that my only standards are "not abusive" and "genuinely likes me back": Edit: I'd like to say that most men most definitely do not have realistic expectations for women, considering half the things you stated can go towards men's expectations for women, you'll find a lot more sexism forced towards women than men, I'd now, I had a guy get mad at me for simply BEING lesbian, I understand you were coming from your end, so here is an opinion on mine (no hate ofc)
The joke was already made that the perfect guy was imaginary. If he said the same joke it wouldn’t be as funny as changing the joke. I don’t know if you’re a comedy channel or a music channel. Either way changing the lyrics is better for the song and the joke.
I am still of the belief of the "perfect" woman exists but last week she died is a reference to the fact that there were woman that fit that criteria, but that is such a bygone era that they are literally dying out
Anyone relate?

When he said "But last week she died", I don't think he's saying that men have lower expectations for women (if anything, it's the other way around), but is rather making a comment on (domestic) violence against women.
My bar was set at "Tries to remember my name at least 50% of the time" and I still had to make exceptions. Yeahhhh, haven't dated in years and have no plans to go back, haha.
I can't wait till you get to one specific song in this special lol. also for the last song definitely record your reaction to the bits before it, the whole last twenty or so minutes of this special is fantastic
Loving your reactions in this series!!
Honestly don't think he was saying guys expectations are closer to reality, I think he just did the 'last week, she died' for the misdirection laugh since it's live performance
your reaction was perfect and I won't settle for less
Totally agree that love is not just a feeling. Love is an act - and you gotta keep at it every day!
3:18 busted. You def have a thing for feet based off of your natural reaction to those lyrics. 100% fact :P
Definitely not a feet guy... Unless? 😳
"Every bit should come out of a vacuum" means it should stand on it's own.
i never noticed how he looks longingly back at the mic
Love is not a feeling: it's a promise.
I honestly thought the whole "she's real, but last week she died" I thought he was talking about a blow-up doll...
You hit it spot on basically man. Idk what's wrong with all the people saying read too much into it or whatever, that's his whole scheme is trying too wake people up n all they want to do is laugh and whatever, it's depressing...
I love lower your expectations, it's surprisingly sweet for a Bo Burnham song... or maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic lmao
I love this song. People really need to hear this. I have lately been reflecting that love is painful.
++ i have the same interpretation
also, USA is pretty patriarchal for my opinion
Dude really listened to the whole song and think men's expectations for women are lower. 😂😂😂
The last time I was this early, I lost my girlfriend.
You uh wanna talk bud?
Came*
She might want to lower her expectations a bit
hey chris! can’t wait to see how you like this one :)
I don't normally watch/sub to reactions, but I'll give ya a sub since your a small channel.
8:39 I think he just wanted a funny way to say the same thing without repeating himself.
And in couples therapy you will find that we all have imperfections to work on & compromise with your partner.
ayy a new one!!!
Love at first sight doesnt exist. 15 minutes is the minimum
Good stuff.
A compilation of Chris's singing in this channel so far would amount to: 🎵 Go to bed, go to bed… in your mind🎵.😁
I'm excited for the next song, the "problem solving song" as a reactor called it thinking he could get in trouble with TH-cam if he used the actual name of the track. (He might not be entirely wrong though: my comments recommending it got automatically censored…🤔🙄)
“I don’t have that problem” thanks for letting us know, we all care.
Bruh😂💀
are you gonna react to the bit immediately after??
11:07 The "I'm 25" thing is the same as in "Kill yourself" - however profound it sounds, take it with a grain of salt.

i feel like you'd enjoy watching the e-girl trilogy by wilbur soot! they're three music videos and the artist was heavily inspired by bo :)
i think the explanation for "last week she died" is not that men have less expectation on women (obviously not), but that women expectations in general are considered delusional while men expectations on women is basically a pressure from a whole entire society, since we are kids we learn to please man, that we should know how to cook, clean for or husband, to always look beautiful in the outside no matter what it takes, so what bo is describing is something we face everyday, so that's why she "die", this women die trying to achieve man/society expectations.
been married for twelve years, this December will be thirteen. We're still very much in love and he's my best friend.
I think that girl was trying too hard to be perfect and ended up dying of exhaustion.
If you see this I’d wonder if you’d react to or just watch in your free time “grew on me” by Tim minchin . I think it conveys your thoughts on love fairly well
put the time of the show you're watching so i can watch at home at same time and see better whats happenning on the show.
Can't wait for you to get to the break up song lol
Hey Chris really enjoyed your video would you like me to do your ironing for you 😊
Sometime's a joke is just a joke my dude, doesn't ALWAYS have a deep meaning.
"Last week, she died" is just funny because we were set up with one thing and given another that's completely different. Don't look too far into that one lol
Sometimes Bo’s dick jokes are just dick jokes lol. It makes it even more impactful when he slips it in with some heartfelt stuff.
While make happy still has a lot of meaning in it, not every bit has loads of deeper meaning like in inside
React to “you grew on me” by Tim Minchin.
Love how you irgnored or at least didn't react to the comments that point out the intended message that you completely missed
Lol. Of course he doesn’t get it. Someone’s uncomfortable with their sexuality.
Chris started talking about porn addiction and then an Onlyfans ad played.
no... what he's trying to say is that it's a joke.
Bo says to women, lower your expectations a few. For men he says, lower your expectations a lot. I agree.
What's up with all the jump cuts on this one? We can handle your unedited ramblings. We actually _expect_ them! 😉
I never edit out any thoughts or anything. Just silence or umm’s. Stuff like that 😅
@@ChrisReactsToThings umms are fine specially when you did have so much to say about the topic! 😃
I disagree and think the edits make the videos immensely more watchable. 🤷♂️
Nobody:
Me a lesbian watching this full well knowing that my only standards are "not abusive" and "genuinely likes me back":
Edit: I'd like to say that most men most definitely do not have realistic expectations for women, considering half the things you stated can go towards men's expectations for women, you'll find a lot more sexism forced towards women than men, I'd now, I had a guy get mad at me for simply BEING lesbian, I understand you were coming from your end, so here is an opinion on mine (no hate ofc)
Yeah, looking back on this video I feel like I definitely didn’t express my feelings in an accurate way. Totally agree with you and also fuck that guy
I think she died last week because of domestic violence and toxic masculinity.
Pretty sure the bit in the beginning is just a funny joke. Not really made to be looked into too deep. Nothing about sexuality. Lol
