Remember seeing this live on TV at the time and being blown away. 14 years later my love for it only increases. Without Glasto, I never discover this.

Blimey! Thank you. It was past midnight after a day of rain and we were soaked to the skin ... but comments like this make it all worth having done.

The very beginning of my fascination with naval folk music, and still the song I look to most. Good god that's good.

Did my dissertaion on the Barbary Slave trade. Came across the wonderful tradition of English folk music.. Love it.

But this is a Scottish song.

Nope, mostly found in England and noted by collectors only occasionally in Scotland and Ireland.

@@YorkyOne, Just because it’s mostly found somewhere, doesn’t mean that it originated there.

If the song was rarely noted down in Scotland but found widely in England then how can you claim it to be Scots in origin? Any evidence to back your assertion?

@@YorkyOne, I could be wrong if it’s origin, since I only thought it was Scottish because of the band Alba that sang it.
Sometimes there’s places that have an abundance of things that originated somewhere else that has a scarce amount of it.
For example; Firearms. They originated in China, but are way more prevalent in the U.S.

I had the good luck to see Spiers and Boden in the Red Lion in Birmingham recently, and I've already bought tickets to both the Bellowhead gig in the town hall and the Jon Boden gig in the MAC. The music is just so beautiful!
