Nice one,as you say,the camera never really shows the degree of difficulty accurately, but you and your Landy handled it like champions 👍😊

I had a 90 with a j19 motor which is the turboed engine land rover had to strengthen it to cope with the turbo .

What size tyres are fitted? They look skinny in the video compared to 235/85r16's?

what would you say your average mile per gallon is? I'm looking at buying a defender with this engine. also would you say its been relatively reliable?

I have never calculated it for several reasons, including; I drive it mainly on logging roads in the mountains, I'm usually in low range and, it has a .667 gear ratio. That being said I have almost never had to dip into the spare fuel i bring with me so the mileage i feel is still pretty good. It just lacks acceleration and the ability to maintain speed on grades.

A Random Potato everyday driving I get about 24mpg in my 2.4 diesel Puma 110 station wagon. That’s about average for all Defender engines to be honest. Maybe 27-30mpg on a long run if you take it steady

A random potato It depends on few factors, weather conditions summer/winter, tyre size, style of driving. Mine 2.5na 90 when I bought it was on 205/75/16 tyres and I made 100km journey that gave me 8L which is about 35miles per gallon UK. Now running 235/85/16 General Grabber and use about 10L in summer and 11L winter time per 100km, or around 27 miles per gallon. This is good reliable engine but bit underpowered uphill so not lowed by everyone. On normal roads you drive as everyone 30-50 miles per hour and is OK only difference make on motorways where you get max 60miles p/h. Green laning or off-road with good tyres in low gears you wouldn't stay much behind comparing to stronger engines, it's down to skills.

@@9058476441 it’s quite common in the UK to change the transfer box to a different ration one, as the military land rovers were very under geared at 1.6, the civvy version was 1.4, but you can take a transfer box of a discovery 1 or 2 and it’s 1.2 ratio, which is also the ratio fitted to the very last defenders. The low ratio gears always remain the same.
You have to make sure your engine can pull those higher ratios though. There’s no point putting a 1.2 ratio with a 2.5na for example.

    200tdi or 300?

      2.5 Naturally Aspirated

They are great little trucks, unfortunately if you get an ex MOD one, they came with the worse engine Ever! They had a 2.5na diesel, while the civilian models came with the 200tdi engine. The reason? They couldn’t fit the 24v alternator to the 200tdi engine.
All later ones were fine as they had the 300tdi engine, which could be fitted with two alternators.

Don't forget the 2 1/4 Series diesel... On public roads with modern cars they are terrible, off road in low range they do what they need to do.
