As others have alluded to in different ways, black smoke from a diesel (and this kind of black smoke only comes from diesels) is a result of poor combustion, whereby the heavier components leave behind unburnt carbon (ie, literally, element C). There are four main suspects: injectors (worn or stuck, causing poor atomisation of fuel), turbo chargers (broken or air filters clogged, causing lack of oxygen during combustion), piston rings (broken er excessively worn, causing poor cylinder sealing), or engine/fuel management system issues. Piston ring/sealing issues are very unlikely to be the case here, as they tend to (also) produce white smoke from the lubrication oil, and failure of the engine management system (ie, effectively the same as EFI for a petrol engine) is very unlikely. It's also unlikely to be caused by unusual throttle application by the operator, as this should be handled by the engine management system. If otherwise maintenance of the vessel is good, it's a blown turbo or a bad injector; and if not, it's poor maintenance, the injectors need to be refurbished, and/or the intake air filters need to be cleaned/renewed.
Hi, watching from Ontario Canada. Not much of a boater myself, but never ever go out in a boat that size without a life jacket. NEVER put my kid on a boat without a life jacket. Can someone explain why there are so few people in the videos wearing life jackets? What am I missing?
I'm amazed that so many people go out when there are small craft warnings. For many of the passengers, I don't see how they would like getting beatup for a pleasure trip.
Rule 101 in bar crossings, don't attempt it with any sort of swell on a run out tide. 99% of the challenging exits/entrances in these videos are on a strong run out tide. And why most of these boats want to go outside in generally appalling conditions is totally lost on me.
It looked like they were throwing it into reverse hard, then back into forward, then reverse.. Maybe the captain felt like he may have something wrapped around a prop? The black smoke was temporary, - it happens when you advance the throttles quickly. The fuel increases instantly but it takes a short time before the turbos spool up enough to feed in the air to burn the increased fuel amount.
Black smoke is either from an air intake issue or from heavy throttle use at low speed. Like trying to push against each wave then backing off and hitting full again for the next
@@bbgcars @ yes, absolutely. anything that affects the mixture ratio, or what the engine management system thinks is the ratio, or anything allowing the scavenging of crankcase vapors. One reason many of these boats take on water over the bow in rough conditions is because of a design problem.. They lack bow flare which is critical for displacing water out to the sides and away from the boats interior. Without bow flare the wave comes straight up and even without wind, much of it ends up inside the boat. Bow flare also acts to absorb some shock as the boat comes down onto or into a wave. I had a 1990 Hydrasports 2000DC. It had lots of bow flare and with that 20 foot boat I could run 25 knots in 2-4 foot seas and stay dry. I was in 5-7 foot seas in the Gulf and although it was slow going getting in from 30 miles out, not once did the boat take a wave over the bow. This was probably the best hull design ever for a 20 foot boat. It disgusts me to see these pathetic designed boats crashing through waves and taking on huge amounts of water...SMH.
I’m no sailor, but surely the guy up on the platform around 1:10 should have been lower down to reduce topweight? It’s not like they need a torpedo lookout.
Remember folks....Under the Law of the Sea; Flying the Jolly Roger is interpreted as notification to other vessels of intention of Piracy. My money is on poor maintenance, given how scruffy the boat is
this
I love that Smith 42 it has everything, cabin plus a bowrider type area..
Probably boost leak on the turbo/inlet side
Black smoke is an air fuel ratio problem. Too much fuel can be caused by a variety of reasons.

Better love fishing , or punishment, to be out there on a day like that.
Dirty fuel, running rich, or not serviced well to maintain the diesel.
smoke is probably due to a fouled bottom. Even ablative paint requires cleaning and moving at least 12 knots for it to work.

Black smoke like that is a dead turbo
The boat bottom has a lot of growth & props are loaded with barnacles = overloaded engines
