  • Thank you for joining Chapter 4 of this 10-part, virtual storytelling journey that brings the book, “Growing Up with the River: Nine Generations on the Missouri” to life.
Growing Up with the River by Dan and Connie Burkhardt explores our state’s rich cultural heritage through the eyes of nine generations of children growing up in river towns along the Missouri River. Each of the 10 chapters will be presented by a professional storyteller and special guest(s). The series will run every Wednesday at 4pm on Facebook Live, ending on September 30th.
Today we will explore New Haven, the year is 1883 (show map). New Haven is buzzy with activity. Four trains a day passed through, bringing passengers and freight, taking flour and fruit trees to market in other towns. Steamboats and ferries stopped with passengers from St. Louis, as well as from southern Warren County. The boatyards built bigger and bigger steamboats to compete with the railroad. Today we will explore one such steamboat - with an unlikely fate.
Today’s chapter will be presented by Brian "Fox" Ellis, an internationally acclaimed author, storyteller, historian, and naturalist. For more than 25 years he has been the Riverlorian for the Spirit of Peoria Riverboat. He has also performed on the Delta Queen, American Queen, and Belle of Louisville.
Today, we have two special guests. Jeanne Damschroeder will discuss the history, renovation, and her experience as the innkeeper for the Central Hotel. Annalies Corbin: Archeologist, and also CEO and Founder of the PAST Foundation, and she will discuss her research and excavation of the Steamboat Montana.
