    Bob,
    Happy to have you back, safe and sound.
    For attaching dissimilar metal objects, with the idea to be able to take them apart later, I use Permatex Copper Anti-Seize Lubricant on the threads. Works very well especially on PL259-SO239 connections. [you know the ones I'm talking about].

    Awesome video. I ordered the Manpack Whip and the McMaster adapter tonight. The hurricane was absolutely crazy down here by Babcock Ranch. Lost lots of shingles on our house and hundreds of trees down in our woods. Otherwise made it thru the storm pretty good. No flooding. It will take all winter to cut n burn those trees. de Mike WE0H ..

    You can buy a 3/8-24 sized tall nuts like the one you use here - and then re-tap half of it to M10 1 or M10 1.5 depending what the pitch is. I was able to put the mil whip on my JPC12 that way. Regards.

    the original antenna is 7ft tall as i recall, adding these antennas instead only adds 2 to 10 ft.... doing so will cost you 10 meters at least maybe 12 and 15 too? but I wonder if to increases the bandwidth on the lower frequencies?

    What about the weight of the taller antenna and the slide adjustment.

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Marvin, and great question. The slide mechanism has a polymer nut at the bottom of the black shaft that locks it in place. When I slide it up and down at will, I don't have the nut tight. I've actually done some testing on that very issue and will be sharing my findings in my torture test video. I used the MFJ-1979 and it didn't slip over short periods of time that I tested it. Were you to leave it outside in the wind for extended periods it may slip a little, but then it really isn't designed as a permanent outdoor antenna. I am targeting the torture test video in the next 2 weeks.

    Have you lost antennas during the IAN Hurricane that was installed outside in your yard?

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  ปีที่แล้ว

      The short answer is, by design, no antennas were lost, and the attic space became the ideal antenna location while we road out the storm.
      Based on my HOA conditions, all my outside antennas are installed so they can be taken down quickly, if needed. My station reference antenna is a 73’ endfed connected to a CHA Hybrid Micro. 36 hours before landfall Tampa was right in the center of the forecasted track, so I took the antenna down, knowing tree branches over my wire would be coming down in 130 MPH + winds.
      At that point, I used an attic dipole to stay connected till we were clear of danger. That left me single banded, but as long the roof stayed on the house, I would have an antenna.
      Glad to say, as of this week, the 73’ wire is back to hiding in plain sight, connected to the CHA Hybrid Micro.

    Do you know if the Toy Box also uses the M10X1 threads? Any idea if anyone has tried this and how the taps are used? I would think with the longer whip, the tap would go up in bands, such as use the tap for 20M to work 30 or 40. Tnx for the videos, 73 WB4GUD.

    • @HOAHamRadio
      @HOAHamRadio  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you add the longer whip to a sliding coil, you change where you would adjust the coil for a particular frequency from when using a shorter ship. Trying to pull that off with the Toy Box, I believe, would be near impossible. You have no way to know how the longer whip interplays with the tap locations.

  • @Summicron1951

    Does the friction of the telescoping tube support the extra weight of a larger whip?

      I think these longer 17 foot antennas can tune 20 meters without even using the loading coil under it. Supposedly you can just put the 3/8 antenna right into the tripod or spike connector... I was thinking the same thing, if the higher weight of the antenna would cause you to have to really tighten that nut to keep it from slippage.

  • @antonanker583
    @antonanker583 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just got the 3/8"-24 to M10 x 1 mm adaptor you mentioned from your link but as the 3/4” -24 end fits my other antennas perfectly, the M10 x 1mm doesn’t so they’ve either changed the threads on it or they sent me the wrong adaptor. Haven’t heard back from the seller yet. I just may have to retap it.

    Sending my GRA-7350T back to Amazon. Within a day the scale is falling apart where the clamp grips. Same issue as seen on another TH-cam video. This scale needs to be laser engraved on the tube not a piece of tape! Since they took your last suggestion, would you bring this up with the manufacturer?

      Randy, I really appreciate you bringing this up. If people are having issues, its helpful to make me aware. I only want to talk about gear that is reliable.
