      Yes, opinions are like...well, I guess you know...must admit, whilst I love horses, did not really know much about them....am now busily trying to make up my lifetime of semi ignorance! Watching something about horses every day,when possible.

      @@saradastrickman6406 Please don't confuse the Royal Mews with the Household Cavalry. The Royal Mews have the horses which draw the Queen's carriages. They are civilian, although many of the staff are ex-military, because they understand the degree of turnout required.

    • @carpediem5232
      @carpediem5232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends on what you mean by maintained. If you mean maintained as in dressed up, well maybe although there is some very well kept horses all over the world. When it comes to getting proper exercise or maintaining a close to natural life style they don't really fit those criteria of maintenance or at least not more than many other horses. And when you think about them as living beings and less as a vehicle or accessory the latter aspects should probably be a priority.

      JT 00 c The cavalry would say there is only one way to take care of horses and that is either their way or the wrong way! They are indeed well turned out with beautifully cleaned tack and riding gear that s top notch. However, having been around horses of all types and disciplines for some 50 years I would not necessarily agree with your entire sentiment nor with the cavalry!

    I saw a slightly different Household Cavalry formation 65 years ago. My family loved it so much we came back the second day and on that day a riderless horse broke out of the rear stables and moved into formation, on-line with the other horses. It caught everyone off guard and they continued not knowing what to do to break up the ceremony. Well someone had to come forward to remove it and the crowd burst into applause for the horse. As a small child this was the best part of my London trip. Broke my heart when I heard about the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park.

Can someone tell me please why your horses toss their heads so much. When I was in pony club and mustering cattle many moons ago I don't remember our horses doing it quite so much.

    I love this so much, having watched many times the changing of the Life Guides and Royals and Blues at horse guards, it was lovely to see how well looked after the horses are and what goes on to getting the horses and the men ready for duty it is fantastic the hours they keep so that the horses are as shiny as their bridles saddles and so much more. I have always noticed how shiny the horses coats are and the troopers uniforms. Also it is lovely to know the horses names and be able to identify them from their markings. I recently watched the preparations for the Queen Elizabeth cup and the judging in that dreadful weather. You might guess that I am a horse lover and having worked with them myself I understand the loving care they get here. Watching again tomorrow I will know exactly what has been done to get them to their place of work. Thanks.

    Her Majesty is very well guarded, the mounted troopers are intimidating AND HRH also has police looking at the crowds for terrorists (domestic or otherwise). A while back, on TH-cam video of a Dutch cadet, looking to join the House Hold Guards. He had issues with the horse training phase.

    The tack seems SO cumbersome though. The riders can't sit well perched up on those saddes, the horses seem uncomfortable in the tack, and they don't look effective whatsoever :/ The horses ridden in military dress jackets and regular hunt saddles look a lot more comfortable and natural.

    I recently saw a video on TH-cam of one of the mounted house guards coming from the stables to fulfill his duty for the day with his horse in great distress because the bit was under its tongue. The animal gave every signal it could that something was painfully wrong but the guard tried to force his mount to cooperate and go through to stand guard instead of listening and checking to see what the trouble was. Finally, someone else came to the aid of the horse and the guard dismounted and walked it back into the barracks. Some of what is in this video is clearly not accurate if that's the kind of horsemanship and care these 4-legged beauties receive. It was shameful. The Queen would have been outraged.

      They are also using very old-fashioned big and harsh bits on them. Quite unnecessary and causing undue discomfort for these horses, as I remaked in my own comment, look at how often the horses toss up their heads while being ridden, clearly a sign of discomfort. The Queen is a stickler for old traditions, no matter at whose discomfort it it ends up costing.

    Hoping one day we revolutionise the way this is done. Anyone who has spent any amount of time around horses would know that is absolutely not the best way to keep them. I hope they’re one day bitless and turned out horses, with streamlined and lighter tack, or simply no horses at all. 08:11 “I love the history of it” don’t we all, but some traditions don’t have to last forever. They have to be modernised, especially those including animals, for their own dignity. No hate! I recognise these animals are fed and well cared for, but we don’t have to stop there. Just hope we can do better one day! 🤞
