Horizon: The Truth about Smell
Taste is our most indulgent sense but it is only in recent years that we have started to understand why we really love the foods we do - and it is a lot more surprising than you might think. There may a way to make food taste sweeter without adding any extra sugar and it is all down to a trick that happens in your brain. Horizon meets the scientist who has grown the perfect tomato, that is sweeter and juicier than anything you are likely to find on a shelf, as well as the men and women hoping to become elite, professional tasters.
Welcome to BBC Earth Science! Here we answer all your curious questions about science in the world around you (and further afield too). If there’s a question you have that we haven’t yet answered let us know in the comments on any of our videos and it could be answered by one of our Earth Science experts.
Having Congenital Anosmia (born without a sense of smell) I was so thankful when all my all my kids simultaneously said "Mom, skunk, roll up the windows." So happy my children all have their sense of smell.
It wasn't skunt its weed
It must be horrible for any person but an aspiring chef?
I've never had a sense of smell so I can relate. Texture is a BIG part of deciding if something tastes good.
Yes. Same for me. No smell no tastes except sweat sour bitter salty
Same but luckily i can taste stuff
OMG
I am literally crying after watching this.
My mother lost her sense of smell about 18 years ago. She never let us know what it feels like. She said "it is just that i can't smell..."
😢 MOTHERS 😭
I lost my sense of smell for about a week after a bout of flu. It definitely make eating a chore when it's all tasteless mush.
Yes it drives ya mad
5 months after Covid ...still can't smell only taste salt, pepper, sweet anf sour.
I feel like
a ghost
My friend was in a car accident and lost the sense of smell aslo .. he also put hot sauce on everything ...
I'm not diagnosed but I've never had a sense of smell and I can say it definitely means I miss out on a lot.
What are the odds? a cook to lose her sense of smell? life is horrendously cruel.
Where can I watch the full episode?
So sad , Thank you for the share .
I'd worry more about the narrator! He seems really depressed!
The narrator is Andrew Scott, an Irish actor
Tells self: *This* is why I don’t jog....
My mom cant smell any thing from birth
Where can we watch the full episode. Would really appreciate it if you would give that information for these small clips of larger shows.
Watching this just made pissed me off. Such a tragedy
I don't have a sense of smell but I can taste. I can tell the flavours of things. I never had a sense of smell so I have no idea how different it is, but I can still tell the flavours of things and apple crisp is my favourite.
I do like hot sauce though.
Wait, I thought that was impossible? Doesn't flavour come from smell?
@@futurez12 see to me that's like saying sight comes from touch.
Also, people keep telling me some things smell different then they taste.
So even for you smelling people it's not as connected as you think.
Yeah me too, I gradually lost my sense of smell during my teenage years and I have never noticed a difference in the taste of things, but all my friends try to tell me food must be so bland
mine went in 2014 due to some weird inflammation in my sinus. its still works but the passages are so blocked the smells cant reach the receptors.
I have the exact same thing from getting sick. Its very weird. I eat things now in about half the size I once did and I eat things that I would have never eaten that is healthier.
I can tell salty or sweet but that is it. Everything in the world has a blank to it when it goes in my nose. No matter how horrible or strong the smells are.
It is covid
I hope mine is temporary
Have you gotten it back?
Sad story and no closure. What happened? She changed carrier?
it takes me 1 week to realized that I couldn't smell
Wow.. the one thing we wanted to be so bad.. a chef.. but she can’t even smell or taste flavor :(
I clicked on this bc I feel that at the age of 32, I'm losing my sense of smell with age.
I was about 6 yrs old when i fall from 2nd floor of our house, its not that high. And until now i dont have sense of smell :(
And i study Bachelor of Industrial Technology Major in Food Technology. Without knowing what is the smell of flower, spaghetti, fried chicken. :(
Makes me want to cry.
because of covid everybody can sympathize with Molly.
I was born without a sense of smell and, I dont know what "flavour " is. I'm a fussy eater; my kids dread going out to eat with me because I'm seldom satisfied. My enjoyment of food is based on texture and, most importantly, seasoning. Surprisingly, I've been told that I'm a good cook, and not just by my children😊
what a cruel irony
Losing one's sense of smell is one of the worst things that can happen to one. I lost my sense of smell sometime in April 2020 for about a month and it was very depressing. Lost touch with taste and burnt virtually everything I cooked.
Everyone is the same, it is covid, i also lost my sense of smell this past few months.
Hi I was in a major car accident and all I got was a broken leg. A sorre back for a while.i was hit by a car walking a cross the street.
I hope you are well, Kevin.

I was born with no smell. I love hot sauce.
geee lweeez this is devastating ..... my condolences
at covid pandemic,i also fell that thing!
My Mom hasn't had a sense of taste for years. She says she can taste things she likes, to which I point out that's just her brain tricking her with the memory of the taste.
Brutal!

😒You should have used a treadmill in your house instead!!
What is a smell?
It is a property of atoms or what...
Extremely small particles detected by hyper sensitive receptors
no entiendo una poronga 🗿
That sucks.
There is nothing such as "found purpose".
i thought that be about losing smell from covid, but then realize it's from summer 2019 of last year before months later in winter coronavirus came and i was looking for a video about how smell and taste lost from covid was like, but i didn't know there is a lost smell in car accidents too, but so without her smell the chef to be can't become a chef anymore when the video said "unable to pursue her dream" under?
You do realize that we cover covid up and only announce it after it is too late right?, and no one can be sure that covid really originate from china, covid symptom is so unclear that it is hard to tell who the first person that contracted it, plus it is a new stuff, the tech and methode to diagnose it are yet to be invented, even today covid test sometimes still fail, so it is probably exist way earlier.
If you notice covid like syptom before 2019, then it is probably that stuff.
Pretty sad
Real life Jewel in the Palace.
yeah, I have a love hate relationship with meat, most is actually tasteless and just a giant chewy mess. but in saying that I do like meat, just I don't really enjoy whole chicken breasts, or steaks, or pork chops. (unless the steak is very rare). and I've never eaten a pork chop or roast I've enjoyed.
"Molly Burnham has had a lifetime fascination with food". Yeah, no shit? If she didn't she would probably starve (I am joking).
God be with u
Spoiler: she can't smell.
So the moral of the story is: Don't go jogging. Running kills. SUCK IT, GYM TEACHERS!
It's sad at least she has a nice knife.
Can’t talk now, have my period
