  • Japanese suspension manufacturer, Tein, makes various types of coilovers for many cars but is their EDFC (Electronic Dampening Force Controller) adds active suspension adjustments on the fly.
    My name is Aaron Forrester, and this is part 3 and the final review of adding the EDFC Active Pros system to my Tein Flex Z coilovers to my 1993 Mazda RX-7. Does this system really make that much of a difference and is the extra $800 cost worth the benefits? In this video, I show you the basics of how to install the system.

    Stunning looking RX7, it's a real credit to you. When you mention at the end that the active pro system doubles the price of the Flex-Z package, it is worth mentioning the middle option of the non-active EDFC system which allows you to adjust between settings manually but does not do the 'on-the-fly' tweaking of the active pro. I have this EDFC system on a Mitsubishi GTO because the original adjustable shocks were toast and are irreplaceable - I wanted a modern system that stayed true to the high-tech ethos of the car when new, and EDFC was the perfect fit. It sits between just the coilovers and coilover+active pro in terms of price and is worth a look if you don't want to stretch to the full active system.

    Thanks for making these videos! I have been looking into getting the EDFC active, but there is almost no content on TH-cam besides the videos that Tein put out. These videos are super informative and I can tell you put a lot of work into quality of the channel. Please keep up the good work. I can't wait to see what you've got next!

    Great video man. I have the Endurapro adjustable shocks (set to 4) w/ H&R OE springs and my modified '19 Accord 2.0t Sport rides better than stock. No EDFC for me, thank you, since I'm only daily driving my car and terrorizing the streets on the weekend!

      I'm running Racing Beat A/S bars already. I just didn't like the harshness of the factory R1 Bilstein set-up. Tires are RE-71Rs on RX-8 wheels, but I have a set of Fikse Profil 10s on order in 8.5/9.5x18. I can't wait to open those boxes.

    This is a new channel for me and I'm glad I came across it! Definitely gonna keep in touch with your channel, I like how your organize your videos.
    I'm still on the fence for these, I have a '99 Honda Prelude and I would love to modernize it but it's really hard to justify suspension worth half the value of the car haha. I love my car but I would prefer not to fall into student debt. This car is my project/canyon cruiser/daily for college. I think it's neat but I would prefer that Tein could come out with something like the EDFC but more comfort oriented. They don't offer the Type A for the Prelude so that's a bummer. It seems this would only really help on those spirited drives but I guess it's something to keep in mind if I get Tein on a future car. Thanks for covering a nice topic! Love the way you have your installation/thoughts/final thoughts/application all in separate videos. I wish more channels could cover products like this instead of just saying "Yeah it works great..." they don't dive into the utility or if it works for me. You basically marketed these Teins haha.

      Thank you so much for the comments! Tein actually made some videos about folks using the EDFC for a family car and helping reduce body roll, squat and dive. I even want to say it was a mini van too. My coilovers and edfc active pro system combined was about 2k. Great value for the quality and customizing ability. Although I agree with you that this does put their product in a favorable light, I'd also argue that if your primary focus is comfort over sports, then airbag suspension may be a better option, although you sacrifice performance for comfort... and space for pumps and tanks in your trunk.

    Very nice work. I just found your channel today, watched all three parts of this series, and subscribed. I hope you have other content done this well. Kudos.
    Sorry if I missed it, but could you also do a video covering the manual modes and how you've used them? Related to that...
    Have you gotten to driven your EDFC-equipped RX7 on any really bad and rough roads, and what have you learned if so? What's the range of ride adjustability from lowered car with firm dampers to a stock-high with soft dampers? Smooth Arizona pavement is one thing, but I'm not just interested in maximizing track or street performance. I'm also very curious how much better the ride can be on horrific pothole-choked rust-belt roads. After a rough 2022-23 winter with a bad combination of snow, freezing rain, freeze-thaw cycles, we in Minneapolis/Saint Paul have some of the worst residential streets I've experienced anywhere in over 30 years of driving. Despite thousands of potholes that have been filled, it's still very bad and I've grown tired of my WRX STi beating me up on terrible pavement. I either need to upgrade the suspension radically or trade it in for a Lexus or something else more compliant.

      The edfc active pro controller has multiple settings. The basic setting is dial the damper to your desired setting, and it'll stay there till you turn the knob. The next setting is a step up. You set your starting number, and as you speed up/slow down/ turn, and at certain speeds, it jumps 3-5 clicks. This second setting makes the changes more distinct if you're using your booty sensor. The 3rd setting is a linear mode. Rather than a large jump, it's cycling up and down all the time (depending on your driving style). This is ideal for canyon driving where there's a lot of movement and speed changes. In with case of mode 2 or 3, as you drive faster, it firms things up for the sharpest response. On long road trips to California (6 hours) I turn off the adaptive setting and dial it down to the softest setting. Don't get me wrong, it's still more firm than oem and with a stiffer sway bar, it's no lexus couch, but it's not bad either. Tein has started selling the edfc suspension as an upgrade for family vans as well, helping it adapt to the roads of Japan.

    I track my flex Zs and they work great. Ohlins of course are a better option, but flex Zs also do the job. I've been looking at the prokit for some time, not just for handling, but it's also a good tech upgrade. Great video.

      I have Flex Zs also, and on the track they show that they are not some ebay coilovers, Tein just been around longer and can sell cheaper, with more options than others. Not to mention each car is different with different spring rates. Mines come 12k front 10k rear, for a bigger car ( 04 gs300) that translate better during tracking or spirited driving as compared to a FD that's factory built already for tracking.

      Thank you! The wheels are custom made just for my car by Airtekk. They designed them in CAD to look like the OEM wheels but to be wider, larger diameter, and multi-piece forged billet wheels.

      Had to come back and watch the series again since I installed my edfc only just last week. And it is the active, I just didn't realize that back when I ordered the set. I gotta say it really makes a big difference to the suspension feel. Great purchase, easy to install and I think it is good value for the money

    I have the Ohlins DFV set and for the past few years I've been thinking about trying to add EDFC to them. I've done some research and I believe there might be a set that will work but I haven't tried yet.
    On the one hand, I can see them causing a real problem if they malfunction in the middle of a corner. But it would be really cool to upgrade the suspension like this, and it would keep people from playing with my damping settings at meets and car shows lol. I've caught someone doing that before and I've noticed several times that my settings had been changed.
    I've been thinking about driving around the country to meet up with other FD/RX-7 owners and go to their favorite curvy roads together. I have a bunch I like in Colorado. Your road looks pretty fun too, but I wonder if you'd want to drive it together since you'd be telling someone else about it lol.

    hey, just spent 4 hours today calibrating EDFC Active Pro it on Toyota Rav 4 :D
    when the car was on the flat surface controller shown the Max Breaking force applied...
    tried to re-calibrate it but had no luck, getting an error
    then I've read in a book that the controller should be installed at 45 degrees angle, we've changed the angle and the force became zero
    hope we'll be able to calibrate it... tomorrow

    I’m installing tein flex A on my 3rd gen Prius as daily commuter the edfc active pro is a cool ad on feature but might be a overkill for my application as a daily ?

      Unfortunately, no. You'd need a 'cup system' or axel lift system to accomplish that. This is used yo adjust dampening and rebound on the fly, not height.

      That's a good question. Tein actually promotes the EDFC system for family minvans as well. If you go to their website, they have a a few pages that show the difference it can help with the family car. Now... the Active pro system... maybe maybe not. The basic EDFC system is a "choose your own adventure" whereas the active pro has multiple settings to change on the go as the situation changes.. or you can choose to turn that system off. The most obvious thing you'll notice with the active system is when it stiffens the front as you slow down, meaning less nose dive, or when you accelerate, you get less squat.

      Thank you I currently got bc racing well was off a friend 4 years ago awhile I was doing all the other upgrades all suspension engine etc and now osr starting to knock hence looking buying new I was stuck between tein with edfc and the bcs for when comes to servicing them you can get all the parts quiet cheap and easy. So I'm stuck. Currently running 500bhp

      @@AaronsEccentricGarage The basic edfc system would help prevent more nose dive and squat for daily driving correct? I gas,brake hard and drive quite fast. I’m gonna go the edfc route if I am not satisfied with the flex z alone with wider wheels. What do you think?

      @achen415 basic edfc simply let's you change your settings on a dial in the car. The active pro monitors the speed and body movements and adjusts accordingly
