So we just saw some random flood of comments below the farm bill episode!! These people think we only said that the MSP will cost the govt 40 lakh crores or 10 lakh crores. Turns out these people only watched the first half of the episode and skipped the second half!! So just wanted to put this out!! Unlike some people who present only one sided arguments, we presented not 1 not 2 but 5 possibilities of the MSP implementation which are both pro and against MSP. 1. 40 lakh crores if MSP is applied to ALL CROPS. 2. 10 Lakh crores if MSP is given for 23 crorps 3. 21,000 crores, if the govt pays the the difference between MSP and mandi price. 4. ZERO. If the govt applied MSP and forces the private players to pay more to the farmers!! So the govt wont have to buy anything and just act as a price regualtor. 5. Profit. If the govt becomes a monopoly, bought all the crops and then sold to private players at a profit! Moral of the story : End tak dekho, fir comment karo!!
Mainly Government cannot directly implement every demands of farmers because in the time of elections government is bound to not to do any changes at present... and also they have no funds to raise the demands at a whole... Government recently approved to buy wheat at ₹125 more on msp and also in WTO for our farmer's sake India demanded permanent reform on public stock holding and also asked for raise in percentage hold of agriculture subsidy backed by South Africa... Though WTO shrugged off India by claiming India unreal about their demand... This shows that government is aware of our farmers needs but it can't fade the fact that government showed ignorance in agriculture reform for India which today led to much heat between farmers... At present government is choosing temporary path to ease the farmers demands for a while but I think after elections new laws will be entertained for the good of our farmers... But how government will be in loss, post buying, will they not sell to make some money, if government will distribute it in subsidy than that is there problem in such case farmers are not responsible for 10lakh corore loss to government. So just don't say such big number that it will be loss to government. And the main points is in such climate change environment, farmers faces loss due to no rain or excess rain.
Okay gotcha but please try to make it more clear next time, because I did watch all of your video but it was not quite clear. And you made the choice seem to be very obvious, but i always love and enjoy your work regardless. Though do try to make clear both the side's arguments.
If private players are forced to buy at msp rates it wouled be cheaper for them to import rice and wheat from international market.. That would again be a burden on our forex..

One thing that comes to my mind is though - Since C2 category is based on assets owned by the farmer, we need to consider that rock bottom poor farmers will remain at their same places but rich landlord farmers would get even richer.. Poor farmers dont even own land, they have to seasonally work at rich farmer's land.. Isnt that right? as I think more, this system could also increase the land prices of rich landowners near Delhi and Mumbai as for farming on their land is already highly profitable.. Maybe like politicians tend to make false promises to poor people, maybe these landowners have brainwashed the workers at their field that the new law will be beneficial for them also leading to mass protest.. (Opposition could have also played a role in this like a deal between the opposition and landowners) (Some thoughts against the government too if you feel I am biased) - government will of course not implement the new rule or it could affect their funding by private companies.. It is (maybe) a surity that the govt is lying about strain on economy and the counter arguments by peasants are correct.. Since private companies would have to put money from their own pockets, they'd rather spend less money to influence the leaders in power to prevent these steps.. So in short according to what conspiracy theory I just randomly spouted - Whole system may be corrupt.. And we can't do a f*ing thing about it, just go around your peaceful day.. Lol

Major concern is unregulated Ground water extraction by farmers in Punjab & Haryana (the ones who are protesting). Actually lands of Punjab & Haryana are not natural regions to grow Wheat and rice. Especially Rice bcz it takes huge quantity of water. And since these farmers use ground water extracted through electric tube wells using subsidised even free electricity. Why these protesting farmers esp of Punjab don't want to grow vegetables, millets, pulses. Why are they hooked to just rice and wheat? Bcz it is their comfort zone . Let the ground water go down, let stubble-burning choke North India. But we the farmers of Punjab and Haryana will not diversify our crops. Your research didn't mention another very crucial aspect of MSP. The World Trade Organization (WTO) framework, specifically the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA), allows developing countries to provide more than 10% minimum support price (MSP) for certain staple products, but with limitations and conditions. Here's a breakdown: General rule: Developed countries are bound by a 5% de minimis limit on product-specific support, meaning they cannot provide support exceeding 5% of the total value of a specific agricultural product's production. Developing country exemption: Developing countries have a higher de minimis threshold of 10% for product-specific support. This means they can provide MSPs exceeding 10% of the value of production for certain staple products without violating the AoA. However, it's important to note that this exemption is not absolute. The AoA, in Annex 5, outlines specific limitations and conditions :- Product coverage: The exemption is only applicable to designated staple products considered essential for food security. Transparency: Developing countries must notify the WTO Committee on Agriculture about their use of the exemption. Safeguards: Developed countries can challenge the use of the exemption if they believe it is causing adverse trade effects. Thus , even if Govt wanted to give MSP , there are limitations as per WTO conditions
Those saying that these are rich political opportunitist farmers that are protesting, need to understand that if MSP is guaranteed it will be the small farmers that benefit that most from it,as the rich farmers can store their produce and sell it according to the supply demand.Secondly in current MSP calculation rent of land is not included and the poor farmer that rents the land has to pay for it from his own pocket.

The government is a governing body, not a business institution. If the government starts interfering in business, then our country is doomed. There is no point in procuring crops at 3,000 and then selling them for a 4,000 profit; it's not the job of the government to do so. They are not a business institution. Secondly, the farmers pay no tax. They receive loans and everything else at 1% interest.
And they still attemp suicide. If they are so happy then why they are doing it. And why is it that business people gets loan for free? Farmers are still paying interests atleast.
@@VY-zt3ph You have missed my point here. My whole point is about the protest that is on going and about their demands on what it means for the GOI and for our countries economy.
@@NewYork0110J I am not understanding something. Are farmers demanding MSP which does not exist now or they are protesting against the removal of MSP in the new Farm laws?
I'll tell what I think this is all about: Farmers just don't wanna be farmers anymore. They are making excuses to cover this up. They want to live the high life - making reels, driving cars and eating at restaurants. They've been badly influenced by social media. I knew this kind of day would come where people doing labourous jobs would get bored but didn't see it coming so soon.
Ofc this would be the result. Everyday all that social media promotes is a lavish lifestyle, no 9-5 jobs, passive incomes and all. Just wait until the new generation of grads come in. We might get to see the same pattern
bro seriously? have some shame. the food you eat is also coming from farmers. dont you want your food makers to have a better lifestyle. if we will give farmers better lifestyle. we will get better quality food. This will benifit both customer and farmers. I agree that food price will rise but still yaar!
The major flaw in the argument is that farmers will overproduce and supply will become more than demand. As if Farmers are not doing that right now. The grain is rotting in the graineries not because of over production but because of govt poor distribution network and corruption. We are still ranking terribly in hunger index. Grain is still not enough for the country.
We are forgetting and ignoring one major aspect to this farmers protests... Yes, there are Arguments on both sides as to why MSP changes need to be implemented or not. But, the farmers are not demanding just MSP changes now are they!!! They want subsidy, free electricity and pension on top of MSP changes. If MSP changes itself can cause so much economic disruption and let's say for argument that the MSP changes will help farmers and not be a problem to the government.... Please tell me where should the government procure the capital for the other demands??!!!... We need to remember that the tax paying demographic of the country is very less.. I think objectively, I stand on the side of the government.. the farmers are demanding too many unreasonable requests I think. Having said that, I hope the find middle ground soon.
This matter was a lot more complex than I thought and now I can't even more form my opinion on what's better.. It could be sorted out by 5 hour research but I'm lazy.. (If all the points listed out in video and counter arguments are absolutely true, than the following opinion seems most appropriate -) One thing that comes to my mind is though - Since C2 category is based on assets owned by the farmer, we need to consider that rock bottom poor farmers will remain at their same places but rich landlord farmers would get even richer.. Poor farmers dont even own land, they have to seasonally work at rich farmer's land.. Isnt that right? Edit 1- (random thoughts) - as I think more, this system could also increase the land prices of rich landowners near Delhi and Mumbai as for farming on their land is already highly profitable.. Lol
That's what I concluded as well. While the current MSP caters to everyone if new MSP(C2) is implemented the rich becomes much richer while the poor is forced to suffer and also disputes from farmers based on regions they are in will all arise because of the disparity in MSP
Absolutely ... Only the landowners will get the benefits...how can the distribution of share be ensured to the landless farmers working on other's land!

17:54 Regarding this argument that the government can buy all the crops and become a monopoly and sell it to other bodies at its own desirable rate.... I want to ask that why is this not happening? It seems to be such a simple solution to all the above problems. Can someone state the cons behind this??? What's the problem in implementing this policy?
Ganesh and Think School team you are doing amazing job, explaining such a difficult topic in such simple words should definitely be appreciated. Like always waiting for next one
Farmers to be supported. As a farmer i can say that If we make profits in private markets only 1 out of 5 times. Private markets are very uncertain. Govt can sell those grains which are getting wasted at lower cost than private sellers in markets ryt why cant they do that. And every year msp rates to be adjusted as per inflation rates. This makes sense as the cost of production will rise as inflation does. Govt shld encourage and give more msp to the crops which are in demand and limit that offer for certain period of time. In this way it helps consumers as well. We sell tomatoes 20rs per kg And consumers get at 40 rs per kg Just transportation and short storage don’t cost 20rs per kg. Conclusion Government must support farmers in all the way possible and reasonably because farming is getting diminished day by day and more irrigation land is getting converted into commercial land.
Bro it is not simple problem This is not like some other country India has vast amount of agriculture land and agriculture products Why can't you accept the new farm laws Scrap the state barriers and diversification of crops and food processing and storage facilities and export of products
To the people saying farmers dont pay the taxes, firstly let them earn enough to pay the taxes..how easy it is to say they don't pay taxes. And also they do pay taxes on certain aspects of farming, it's a vast field. India's 50% population is agriculture dependent, to the people saying msp would only benefit farmers, it means half of India would be uplifted. And I'm not saying all the demands should be fulfilled, but the govt should make a valuable change in the system and create a provision that is well balanced. So terrible that the comments here show that people take farmers for granted.
Great video. He covered all the sides. In my opinion the Govt must improve their storages. Make a fixed quantity on the basis of land owned or cropped by farmers. So that the diversity of crops remain and demand supply doesn't get affected in huge numbers. Storage is the main thing farmers sell the 1 tone onions at 20-30 rs(3 paisa per Kg) then in market had to buy same thing at 80/90 per kg ( after few months)
Lovely unbiased review by you, love to have Hindi version so that will help more elders to understand the issue. And most of our elders are blaming government in our agriculture depending area
you made it so easy to understand. A lot of my friends were arguing with me that the government is oppressing the farmers by not allowing MSP to be applied to all the crops. i told them how it will significantly affect our capital expenditure from other equally important areas but no one would understand. this video cleared their doubts and now you just said what I wanted to say but a 1000 times better.
After watching this and thinking logically for an hour i agree msp for every single crop is not possible. I was supporting farmers but if msp is fulfilled then we all will have to bear that cost.

There is also WTO factor that is against MSP. I think only 5% of total produce can be procured by the govt as per their norms. WTO is also pressuring us to remove the subsidies to agriculture sector and the MSP. Also the actual cost of MSP will be lesser than as stated because govt can sell the grains through its various schemes and recoup some amount spent for procuring the crops even though at a loss. I read in some report that the actual cost will be 20k crore as govt can sell those grains.
bhai 90% procurement bas punjab haryana se hota hai baki states kya kare , aur goverment ka yahi kam nahi hai na agar 20k crore mai bik raha hai tho yeh log khud beech lete . 18rs kilo hai international rate 22rs msp kiski jeb se jaega difference tax payers ki kal mai kapda beechne lagu aur na bike tho government beechegi .business hai bhai . wheat reject ho jata hai inka international market mai quality ke liye water table neeche ja raha hai continuously , apne aap ko upgrade nahi karna chahte hai ,kuch saalo baad uga nahi paenge wheat . pakistan jaisa haal ho jaega india ka 350 rs kilo atta .

I think msp can be guaranteed for small land owning farmers. Link the lands owned to aadhar or ration. Choose a limit where most of the poor farmers come and set msp. Let others use market. At the same time government must also focus on storage as we have seen price increases due to war in ukraine and government can use this for diplomatic purposes easily instead of banning export for some time.
Dear Buddy As we all know that Seeds, Fertilizers, Insecticides, Fungicide Electricity Transport etc are produced and sold by Private Players and they have control to MSP of these items, cost of production of these to the farmers are increasing day by day. Instead of giving weavers, Pensions and MSP if Government can assure and distribute Seeds and other requirements for crops production, along with Electricity And Transport Facility, the issue will be resolved permanently. Agriculture and Mnrega are the biggest jobs producers in India than any corporates. So Government has to think from this perspective also.❤🎉
What about the subsidies on fertilizers and free distribution of seeds and other agricultural equipment’s including farm loan waivers.. is that factored in cost of production??
Yes!! Govt is already funding a lot of money. That's not factored in. Punjab farmers who are protesting now are either Khalistan funded protesters or misguided based on some propaganda.

2. 10 Lakh crores if MSP is given for 23 crorps
3. 21,000 crores, if the govt pays the the difference between MSP and mandi price.

In fact, Punjab should not grow rice at all. Eastern UP, Bihar and Bengal are right place. They have abundant water. No water pumps required. But irrigation canals are lacking there. So, we should invest in irrigation canals in Eastern UP, Bihar and Bengal, and increase the yields of rice there.

The water level has gone down in the areas of these farmers which is a threat for future generations.
Eastern Bihar, West Bengal have more per acre productivity for water intensive crops like rice.
These so called protesters just want they be given fixed MSP for Rice and wheat bcz they don't want to diversify the crops, not want to invest in new tangible or intangible assets.
We will sow rice, ask a poor labour from Bihar, UP to run tube wells at night on free electricity, let him care for our crops for 4 months while we enjoy. And then we will get a fixed MSP on rice and wheat.

Your research didn't mention another very crucial aspect of MSP.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) framework, specifically the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA), allows developing countries to provide more than 10% minimum support price (MSP) for certain staple products, but with limitations and conditions.
Here's a breakdown:
General rule: Developed countries are bound by a 5% de minimis limit on product-specific support, meaning they cannot provide support exceeding 5% of the total value of a specific agricultural product's production.
Developing country exemption: Developing countries have a higher de minimis threshold of 10% for product-specific support. This means they can provide MSPs exceeding 10% of the value of production for certain staple products without violating the AoA.
However, it's important to note that this exemption is not absolute. The AoA, in Annex 5, outlines specific limitations and conditions :-
Product coverage: The exemption is only applicable to designated staple products considered essential for food security.
So farmers are also demanding that India Exit WTO?
@@himanshusinghal242maybe that's why one of the demands made by the farmer union leaders is to leave WTO.. So that there is no restrictions!!

Farmers just don't wanna be farmers anymore. They are making excuses to cover this up. They want to live the high life - making reels, driving cars and eating at restaurants. They've been badly influenced by social media.
I knew this kind of day would come where people doing labourous jobs would get bored but didn't see it coming so soon.

Among all the videos about farmers protests your video is so authentic, unbiased --- hats off to making such a vast subject look simple.
(If all the points listed out in video and counter arguments are absolutely true, than the following opinion seems most appropriate -)
Edit 1- (random thoughts) - as I think more, this system could also increase the land prices of rich landowners near Delhi and Mumbai as for farming on their land is already highly profitable.. Maybe like politicians tend to make false promises to poor people, maybe these landowners have brainwashed the workers at their field that the new law will be beneficial for them also leading to mass protest.. (Opposition could have also played a role in this like a deal between the opposition and landowners)
(Some thoughts against the government too if you feel I am biased) - government will of course not implement the new rule or it could affect their funding by private companies..
That's why I can't get my head around the swaminathan report.
That' why the rich farmers are protesting brother........

(Some thoughts against the government too if you feel I am biased) - government will of course not implement the new rule or it could affect their funding by private companies..
Lol
I think that farmers have gone nuts they need think what is good for the nation and not just themselves
Bhai it’s just a khalistani protest no real farmer is protesting and they are anti national elements
I think it's not their fault ,years of suffering and lack of education have made them getting negatively influenced and think for themselves

Regarding this argument that the government can buy all the crops and become a monopoly and sell it to other bodies at its own desirable rate....
As a farmer i can say that
If we make profits in private markets only 1 out of 5 times.
We sell tomatoes 20rs per kg
And consumers get at 40 rs per kg
Just transportation and short storage don’t cost 20rs per kg.
Conclusion
Government must support farmers in all the way possible and reasonably because farming is getting diminished day by day and more irrigation land is getting converted into commercial land.
Bro it is not simple problem
This is not like some other country
India has vast amount of agriculture land and agriculture products
Why can't you accept the new farm laws
Scrap the state barriers and diversification of crops and food processing and storage facilities and export of products
This arguement is on MSP. How about other demands of loan waivers, monthly payment of 10K for each farmer?
To the people saying farmers dont pay the taxes, firstly let them earn enough to pay the taxes..how easy it is to say they don't pay taxes. And also they do pay taxes on certain aspects of farming, it's a vast field. India's 50% population is agriculture dependent, to the people saying msp would only benefit farmers, it means half of India would be uplifted. And I'm not saying all the demands should be fulfilled, but the govt should make a valuable change in the system and create a provision that is well balanced. So terrible that the comments here show that people take farmers for granted.
40 lakh crore
Is acceptable?
What about govt employees, infrastructure
Then what is difference between old and now
Very well explained but one thing that striked me was the cost many articles have beend published that this cost is misleading please look after that
Great video.
Can anyone buy at 80/90 per kg and vote for current govt
Pur mindset should change
Excellent video. Waiting eagerly for your explanation for the black paper.
Lovely unbiased review by you, love to have Hindi version so that will help more elders to understand the issue. And most of our elders are blaming government in our agriculture depending area
Thanks for this insightful video! ❤
why only Punjab farmers are protesting??
Because they are their farmer unions are funded by george soros.
Bcz they are anti nationals 😊
you made it so easy to understand.
40 laksh crores
All state income should give to Central govt
Then it will happen
India needs industries actually then all. Our problem will be solved one by one
Amazing breakdown. I didn't know that the farmers are demanding revised calculations in MSP.
After watching this and thinking logically for an hour i agree msp for every single crop is not possible.
I was supporting farmers but if msp is fulfilled then we all will have to bear that cost.
Ganesh ...you forgot to mention about another demand by the farmers....that India should EXIT THE WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION...!!
_As an Indian...I Stand with my PM and My Government...Thats It..!!!_ ❤🇮🇳🚩
Kyu goverment ne tujhe paise dete hai kya bkl
i found this channel one month ago and now im addicted to its video they are so informative and mind bowing i watched almost half of the videos of this channel youre doing great work think school i appreciates your efforts
Wowww Ganesh, wish I had u as my professor while I was studying economics...u make it so easy for the students. Amazing work...keep going
his most famous dialogue "chalo" 😂😂 5:30
Abhi and niyu did a better job at explaining the pro n cons of farmer demands.
@@loneQuarkbhai agree with you..mera bhi argument yehi hai...yeh sale Aaj dekh rahe hai....future nhi dikh raha
18:30 and all the counter arguments are completely senseless.
Thank you!
a little explaination/ elaboration on that thought plzz
@@tanishkbansal6183 If the guaranteed msp causes the private players to buy at a higher price as well. It would just cause inflation as previously explained in the video
@@tanishkbansal6183you are hoping that the private players will buy from the Government once the implementation of MSP so that the Government can make profit but if private players start to import grains from other countries where these grains can be imported for a relative lower price then it will be a huge economic chaos.
@@tanishkbansal6183 sure let me help you out
the most imp point is where the private players will directly buy it from foreign players if they are forced to buy from MSP as they can't go for losses .... it's already happening as ITC is already procuring its wheat and rice from Russia and Argentina as they are getting it at a much cheaper rate. Socialistic policies still haunt us even today and act as a barrier to our economy. and I'm a little upset that @thinkschool didn't talk about the other unrealistic demands of farmers.
2nd point...... today if govt starts selling at a forced price of 5000rs per quintal then there will be artificial price inflation on the market ad hence today you are seeing farmers protesting tomorrow more people like you and me will protest on the street for inflation.
@@pranatimishra1659 aah sure sure understood i understood , but what about these socialist mFs and so called democracy savers/requiers which think it is all right to protest in the national capital just months before the elections , putting the lives of 100 if not 1000s in danger...... just with ! statement that "they are farmers they are annadata , respect them" .... and i really like this hypocrisy of taking Hindu core cocepts of annadata as first learnig and when elections are over saying ki cow belt chose hindus and intelectuals chose progressive gove------ yeag sure this pregressive govt. whose head has already announced if wins elections will implement MSP in all his states ........ ask that basta*******d that after paying all the lones when the state is only left with 15 Lakh CR where will you get the money to pay 6cr every year
I think msp can be guaranteed for small land owning farmers. Link the lands owned to aadhar or ration. Choose a limit where most of the poor farmers come and set msp. Let others use market. At the same time government must also focus on storage as we have seen price increases due to war in ukraine and government can use this for diplomatic purposes easily instead of banning export for some time.
But not for these khalistani farmers
@@PggggAren't they living in India?
@@Leo_2k2 of course the Punjab Sikh farmers are khalistani supporters and they hate Hindus and Modi
If farmers get their MSP deal then every manufacturer should also get MSP for whatever product they are manufacturing…
Give them msp...cut all subsidies... tax them as corporates...
Getting food from corporate or farmer
It's very easy in bjp era to make anyone anti-national
Dear Buddy
As we all know that Seeds, Fertilizers, Insecticides, Fungicide Electricity Transport etc are produced and sold by Private Players and they have control to MSP of these items, cost of production of these to the farmers are increasing day by day.
Always support farmers
The demands are unrealistic we should focus on building infra and reducing unemployment
The government is not able to store, government is not able to export, government is not even able to distribute it to drought struck areas, what exactly is government doing at the moment?
@@SanjaiKrishna-yy8gz Who said Government isn't supposed to do business? Modi? Government is the largest business entity in any country! It's literally the set of people we have appointed to take care of our country's business. What we export, what we import, what should be taxed and how much? Everything is done by the government. Privatizing country's assets is not the solution of incompetent government? Ask for better government! Insist on better governance!
@1morerahul Govt's job is administration and not business.
Being a socialist state, they are already controlling enough. They should only hold stake in extremely critical sectors. You should want them out of your life, not give them more control.
What if the private players start importing crops as it would be cheaper to import some crops then purchasing it from the government?
yeah your right, importing rice from russia is cheaper than buying domestically at MSP prices
it's like russia gives it at around 1800, and at MSp it's around 2200
These protesting farmers were thinking like we have to destroy india in a week.
Without this explanation,by listening to their demands can understand how india if this non sense is implemented
It seems like you didn't listen the counter arguments 😅
@@iamtirodiyan5369it seems like you didn't notice the fact that no other state farmers are on the road with their mercdes and thar, bolero, it's politically backed.
