Put the springs on first and stretch the brakes on, done a few hundred much easier. Axels stands Never trust a jack! I'm currently doing up a 47 ford mercury.

@@DirtPerfect Me or the lib comment. When replacing brake pads pre install the springs and adjusters ( if applicable ) across ( between ) the pads before installing to the backing plate. It is much easier to do than trying to put the springs in after the pads are attached to the backing plate. I've replaces a lot of brakes. It can be a pain but it is easier when you get used to it and it wont take long to get used to. Yes I know you have finished but someone else may read it.
Never trust a jack always have something under the vehicle that will stop it, the vehicle not the jack, crushing you. Jacks can fail or vehicles can fall. Even with only one wheel of the ground. I kinda like your vids and I cant see you driving a digger or anything else if your chest is crushed or legs are missing. It happens too often and people get injured or dead and yes I've done it myself plenty but you're on video.

Your Jeep is a Military M38A1 that was produced from 1952 to 1971, with a few changes it became the CJ-5 (introduced in 1955). There were 2 serial number plates on the Jeep tub when new (dash plate and patent plate located on the wheel housing behind the passenger seat)...these two plates would have the same serial number. The engine has a serial number (different than the body tub) and if it still has the original engine the prefix letters will be "MD", if it has a replacement engine it will be "RMD". The engine serial number is stamped just above the water pump on the block.

Good job working on Jenny, not so sure your safety officer would pass the lifting set up! Maybe the Jeep is different but I thought there were 2 different brake shoes the one one the front side was the shorter lining shoe and the back side was longer lining. Great to see history being appreciated!
And also each end of every brake shoe should be beveled, that prevents brake squeal when brakes are applied.

I have a 52 wyllis M38A1 money pit, oops I meant jeep. Need a good solution for seats as the ones in it are cobbled up and will only fit a really small person! Good luck with yours. Kaiser Wyllis has every imaginable part for it and probably your jeep too.

A little trick for doing drum brakes do one at a time to compare them if not you can mess up just a little tip lol
Power steering by Arm Strong.. lol. Transmission sounds a little noisy when you let off at around @39:05 - @39:10.

An early concept (simplest) of mine was a Jeep Scrambler with its interior arranged like a standard jeep, with regular hard and soft tops, but would also have a custom (form fitting) metal removable, lockable "trunk" mounted in the remaining space behind the top and tailgate and reaches just below the rear window.

Old owner of two of cjs when you fix your wipers if you go back to vacuum make shure to use a fuel pump with a vacuum pump so the wipers work full time. also put in a vacuum tank for store and help with the vipers.

The reason they went to the adjuster at the bottom between the shoes was to facilitate self adjusting. You might want to convert to a dual circuit master cylinder for safety.

going back to the late 90's.. i just started with the seating company here in oz.. was told if fitting seat belts to a body panel and not a original oem point you needed to put a 50 x 50 x 5 mm washer on the outer panel.. rules over there are different to here i know.. and i do not know how you fitted them in the jeep.. great vid thanks heaps keep them coming..
Definitely different in the USA. They would use a 2”x2”x3/8” washer. 😉

about 66 years ago, I learned how to drive a stick shift '46 cj2 and the '54 cj3 is about the same - pretty basic vehicle but not worth a damn as a farm tractor even though they called it a 'universal' jeep.
I took just shy of 75 feet of wire out of my '68 CJ5 and I think there is some more left to come out. There was exposed copper everywhere. I have not worked on it for a while due to an injury but I'm hoping to have it back on the road next spring. I had a '67 that we ran the wheels off of and loved it.

we all now you want to and need to work on LT Dan but if LT Dan is finisht the jeep is in the way its smart to finish the jeep first so you have more free space
All you need now is a Army green paint job with decals!
Factory brakes are riveted bonded drakes came out in the mid 70s remember learning how to rivet brake in school in the early 70s
Love the Jeep. You should call it General P. The nomenclature on the Jeep was GP for General purpose vehicle.
Have you found a shovel that fits the mounts on the bottom side of the hood yet.
having restored a number of 50 and 60 era vehicles many of the wiring issues are ground issues... sanding every contact before really starting the troubleshooting fixes so many items. assuming of course that some previous person hasn't goofed it up.

weld plates on the frame around the shock towers or you might have cracking problems. my dads willys cracked there twice from hauling firewood
I've been around a few different Willis jeeps in my life. They have a distinctive sound when running. Hearing yours reminded me of it.

And I thought you were going to exchange out the old front drum brakes for new disc brakes (brake kit), but I was thinking, maybe you were going to keep it original, until I saw all of the new stuff, including those LED headlights!

That’s an M38A1. That’s an army issued jeep, only used during the Korean War (limited numbers). The original SN plate should be behind the passenger seat on the fender. It was originally an 24V, watertight jeep. Also, the brakes can be converted to disc brakes by using Geotracker brakes (89-98).

It is a M38A1 it is made like a 1955-1971 CJ5 . A CJ3A or CJ3B are both flat fender jeeps. Lol and you won't have a lot of brakes when you get all of those parts put on !
