With his work on Doom, Mick inadvertently created a new sub genre dubbed “Argent Metal” which ended up defining his style. I know the Eternal DLC shy’d away from that sound a bit for a more traditional metal sound and from what I remember it was well received. It’s hard to follow Mick’s genius as he definitely perfected that “Doom Sound” but a new setting and prequel story can pave way for something much more new
yesterday i watched how Mick explained his music creation process for Doom 2016 and to be honest the sheer amount of dedication to even basic synths/instruments he created for the OST is insane. Idk how one would recreate something like this.
I sometimes rewatch his GDC talk about making 2016 soundtrack and it's great. He worked around so many limitations and made some crazy stuff to make that sound
Finishing Move Inc who are in charge of the new DOOM music run circles around Mick Gordon in every aspect. Just listen to the trailer. Then check their experience , music degrees, awards. I could care less about Gordon who jeopeardized the release of DOOM Eternal.
@@spirothegamer this sounds pretentious and stupid. Are you saying music has some objective metric that can be measured and compared to define whos music is "better"? Get out of here with this bs
At the same time why would they? They have a great example of what their contractor does to passionate artists, so might as well just half ass it and get the bag.
These are some of the biggest shoes to fill in the history of gaming OST. On one hand, since Doom 2016, the soundtrack really had a very recognizable identity. Doom eternal upped this with the freaking demonic choir. On the other, they can't just repeat what was done, since mimicking Gordon' style has a lot of caveats to it. I just hope I can extend my gym playlist lmao
Fr! I'm ngl, I got a few of Mick's Doom osts on a motivational playlist for doing shıt I don't feel like doing (studying, chores,....getting out of bed 😅)
Important to note that the song heard in the sizzle reel trailer and the music heard during the gameplay section before the talk about sliders is all the same song. Obviously it’s been chopped up and whatever else to fit the footage, but it’s a super varied and novel track throughout. That makes me very excited for the rest of the soundtrack
I absolutely love how they made the music for Dark Ages, from what I've heard so far. It's not Mick but it shouldn't be. They should make something that stands on its own and is rememberable. And it seems they did just that.
What Mick did was great but Doom had great soundtrack befor him and with DLC's even after him, what Is in trailer's for TDA sounds avesome and Iam sure it will be memorable
I'm pretty confident about the music. When Doom Eternals DLC came out they had Andrew Hulschult and David Levy to replace Mick and it was a great soundtrack on top of micks work some great tracks from the DLC if you want to listen are "World Spear" "blood swamps" "Davoth" and "Atlantica"
I won't crap on the new soundtracks at all, but it still feels dirty to me supporting the IP after what Bethesda pulled. Not to mention I'm happy with Eternal being the last. The DLC's weren't great in my opinion.
I don't like how things went down with Mick and I believe gross mismanagement (Marty Stratton) is to blame. It sucks that he's gone. That said, this is a prequel to Doom 2016 so the different musical style works quite well. Now if we play the games chronologically it'll go from Medieval Metal to Argent Metal to Hyper Argent Metal which is perfect really.
In one of the videos from ID, they talked about making this game in a different pace to the other two, the first one (2016) was RIP AND TEAR. The second one was Zooming around, extreme movement and reaction. This one, is all about the heavy steady march of doom to your enemies. They talk about how this one is more about standing your ground and punching back with parries and reactions, rather than zooming around hitting them from behind. This is what I think you are picking up on in the music. It's a different vibe, but, Mick Gordon's epicness will be missed. We'll have to see if this soundtrack matches the gameplay as well as 2016 did. That was the magic that Mick brought.
ADVICE: I didn't enjoy the classic Doom either because of feeling nauseous. The fix? Increase the field of view (FOV) and disable motion blur. Welcome to Doom.
That part where it kept doing this *JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN* kind of feels like the EA Command and Conquer stuff. Something that comes to mind is Red Rock For Mother Russia in RA3.
If it's anything like Andrew Hulshult's now official IDKFA, it'll slap HARD. If it'll play more like the classic in a way, let's bring it back to the classic music BTW Marco, Finishing Move have worked on: Halo 2 Anniversary, Flight Sim 2024, Grounded, Borderlands 3, and Dropchord (amongst other games) so there's plenty of different genre experience there
One thing I hope will continue is the reference to older Doom tracks. The OST for TNT Evilution could use some representation in modern Doom. Especially Into the Beast's Belly, from Metal, Mt. Pain, and Last Call.
The fact they have it play more like the OG Doom's makes me want to play it, but the fact they wanted us to know someone else was doing the music, and it kinda still sounds like Mick's stuff, is evening my Hype Scale pretty hard, I do have gamepass, so I can always play it for *free*?
When you bring up classical musicians going apeshit for that stuff as a metal head its endearing metal has gotten me through a lot of tough days, and as for the whole metal sound there's tons of subgenres that easily fit in the world of Doom. This entire series is to me a love letter for metal as a genre
Honestly, if you're gonna jump into the Doom franchise, dark ages would be a good place to start. Eternal was kind of hard to get into for a lot of people (especially people who haven't been gaming g most of their lives) to get into because of the wide breath of the mechanics and the difficulty. In the dev direct, Hugo Martin explains that they've been trying to simplify a lot of the mechanics while slowing down the overall pace of the game.
The way the combat is described reminds me a lot of Serious Sam honestly - horizontal arenas, high enemy counts, dodging projectiles, and extremely powerful weapons. I'm just waiting for the reveal of the not-headless kamikaze.
@SolidSnake240 because 2016 is substantially worse than Eternal and teaches the player a flat-out boring way to engage with the mechanics. Don't get me wrong, I liked Doom 4, but the mechanics were not as finely tuned as they were in Eternal and hopefully will be in Dark Ages. Hugo Martain has even gone on record saying that there were too many unplanned for exploits that less experienced players would fall into.
Hey Marco! I love your videos so much! It would be lovely if you reacted to Sulejmani's theme from Ace Combat: Join Assault. The violins part of it is insane! It literally never fails to make me tear up everytime I listen to it. On top of it is Sulejmani's tragic backstory where he was sold by his parents as a child soldier.
I know this isn't really relevant to this game, soundtrack or genre, but I would love to see you react to any Legend of Zelda soundtracks. There are a lot of details and emotions mixed in that a lot of people don't discover upon first playthroughs or listening to the themes for the first time. In particular, I highly suggest Midna's Lament, as not only is it my favourite, but by far the most beautiful and heart wrenching melody that the games have produced. (In my personal opinion.) I feel that you would highly enjoy listening to most soundtracks that the franchise has to offer because of how emotional and deep each and every song feels. The three games I would suggest listening to should you want to delve into their atmosphere, would be Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess. The others are just as good, but I feel don't hold a candle to these on an emotional and sentimental level. Love what you do, and what you have to say on a lot of these soundtracks! Take it easy!
I'm super early!! I think it's not possible to replace Mick Gordon, his approach to Doom was really unique. It's a pity that they didn't treat him properly... But I'm sure the new team should do a great job, too, because the Doom franchise has a lot of history/lore to fuel their research and creative process (and I hope the devs learned to value these creative workers this time). There's also the fact that the title Mick worked on allowed him to be more experimental. Since they seem to be changing the pace of the game this time, I guess they might lean heavily on sounds building tension. Now... making Doom easier to play? I'm all for it as a 30+ gamer too, but I'm not so sure how the og Doom fans would react to that... I guess they'll be satisfied enough if the sliders allow them to make the game as hard as they want to, too. I don't have the time to play a game like this anymore, but I'm looking forward to the lore drop videos coming in the future, cause Eternal brought a lot of new stuff that has yet to be properly explained (to me, by another lore nerd who will experience it themselves and produce a video essay on the subject 😂)
Doom eternal has been THE game for me, everything i want from a game was there and there was nothing that i can really complain about, you find maybe a couple of games like that if you're lucky, so I'm very excited to see how the dark ages turn out When it comes to the music so far it sounds good but I'll wait for now, i want to hear more and hear it during gameplay to get a good feel on it
2:34 Im guessing ur tried turning on/off motion blur, using a mouse/keyboard instead of controller or even playing on a PC so the frame rate is higher (can aleviate that, its why ppl r reccomened to play VR games at highe FPS). Damn thou that must really suck. I feel bad for u, Ik its a problem some ppl experience thou. At least this one is meant to be slower than the last 2 gameplay wise so that might help. BTW doom eternal had a LOT of ambient music during environment/jumping puzzles which actually sounds A LOT like the ambience in the vidoc, probably because its the same planet potentially (sentienal prime).
Doom is the main game I'm looking forward to this year for both gameplay and the soundtrack. Similarly, looking forward to the upcoming chapters of Deltarune for lore and music 😂

I find it amusing that they also replaced Andrew Hulshult for seemingly no reason. Could have fooled me, though! I don't really understand why the guys at Finishing Move are trying to sound like him. Actually, I'm disappointed they didn't go for an entirely different direction given the source material. They could have done some kind of metal bardcore thing, but it's just more chugging guitars.
I think you would be fine with at the very least Doom Eternal. The Doom games also make me very motion-sick because of how fast the movement is and how the camera bobs up and down, paired with how claustrophobic the levels are. Doom Eternal however was very enjoyable for me. The maps are almost always wide open, there's no nauseating camera movement, and the gameplay is fast enough to be exciting without making your stomach feel like it's in a tumble dryer.
When i first heard mick gordon wasnt working on Doom TDA i was concerned because to be able to replicate his style is very hard, especially because its a somewhat new kind of sub-genre of metal. When I heard the music I came to understand they weren't trying to replicate Mick Gordon's style but instead more generic style metal (which is not in of itself a bad thing), I would hate if they tried to replicate Mick Gordon's style, fail and still ship it out. If anything this style of metal probably suits Doom TDA more because it is slower than even Doom 2016. If you put Doom 2016/eternal music on top of this gameplay it would feel disjointed. all in all its a perfect fit for this style of doom game, not for me since the fast pace is core to me for the new doom era. That and its £70 price point, yeah im not buying it at full price
