  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Paul Dukas): A Harpist's Review // A Write for the Harp Video from Danielle Kuntz
Not all orchestral harp parts are 100% good examples of harp writing, but still have excellent ideas for aspiring orchestrators. This piece effectively uses the harp's timbre in the overall orchestration, while still having passages that require substantial rewrites.

Thank you! This was great. I am trying to make a mockup of this piece and wondered "how in the world can the harpist even play this?" Now, I know. They say "sure Mr. Dukas", while they simply only play the parts that are going to matter. The enharmonic discussion was fascinating as well.

Unfortunately true! It's too bad, because it's a very fun piece!

At 17:00 (few bars after rehearsal 38) when there is no enharmonic replacement available, since the line is played in octaves between the hands, would it work to just drop one note in one hand and the next one in the other ?

I once said to a composing friend of mine that Dukas was an excellent composer, but his orchestration skills were absolutely HORRENDOUS.
