I did a really bad job explaining my perspective on the show so I wanted to clarify my stance. Venom has always come off as a joke when there isnt an element of corruption of a host. I am not saying joke character as in Deadpool, I am saying joke as in more often than not he is written so over the top that it is comical instead of scary like the intent. Then eventually once Venom gets more connected with a host they double down and it gets legit goofball odd couple buddy cop comedy and we see that in this movie because that is where Eddie starts as a character since we have no Peter/Spider-Man. -Tim
The strength of Venom's character was always built off the back of his relationship to Spider-man. That entire dichotomy is what allowed the character to grow from a frightening, unpredictable revenge-obsessed psychopath to a fascinating antihero who is then allowed to build an identity beyond his jealousy of Spider-man. I guess I haven't seen the goofier comics that Tim has, but I think this comment better illustrates his point. Other hosts will absolutely change up the behavior of the character.

This movie is so dumb, but the main thing I will always remember is being alone in a theater and being pulled out of a movie so fast. That airport is filmed in the Georgia World Congress Center where many conventions occur, the funny thing is just around the corner from the escalator is where the S.W.O.R.D. lobby from WandaVision is.
As a die hard Venom fan it hurts when Tim mentions that Venom has also been goofy and dumb, especially after how great the recent Donny Cates and King in Black run was.
I remember seeing this in theaters and my favorite part was the Into the Spider-Verse preview that played after the credits. Seeing this movie happen alongside Cates and Stegman's Venom comic run made the movie even worse for me.

I had forgotten your Spider-Man rankings and being reminded just hurt. Yes, the Raimi trilogy does not hold up great but 1 and 2 are 16 and 19 years old so I think they deserve a little slack. Amazing 2 and Venom are 7 and 3 years old and were this bad! They have no excuse!
Tim has a weird interpretation of Venom. I've read it for almost 30 years, and he's mostly not *intentionally* written to be goofy. There was a span in the late 90s that would read real goofy now, but it wasn't intended to be that way at the time. It was trying to be edgy, it just sucked at it.
I think his perception comes from the 90’s comics like Venom: Sign Of The Boss where Eddie is written as more comedic when fighting crime like singing the Venom man theme song or Eddie dressing up as a nun. It’s just the character has evolved so much over the years and had different hosts that his comedic nature is not really a staple of the character anymore. Like Rick Remender’s Venom deals with Flash Thompson’s alcoholism and Donny Cate’s Venom deals with Eddie killing a kid in a hit and run.

I actually think they got it right. its a total mid tier origin story. I felt like it struggled to figure out what it wanted to do. it had two good storylines that just couldn't work together and they should have chosen one or the other. the superhero origin story could have been cool and they played into that with Chadwick learning to be BP and shore making weapons and stuff, but then they switched back to the heir to the king social justice storyline. both were good stories I just felt both storylines were half baked because they were trying to do too much in one movie and each story was stepping on eachother or wasnt able to be fully fleshed out and focused on.

I’m afraid Hardy is one of the architects behind the dumpster fire performance and what is coming with the sequel. He and his producing partner have story credit on the sequel! lol

Trash movie is still trash. Only cool part is Venom himself (not the character, but his design/look). Seeing him in a live action movie is awesome, but the writing, acting, casting is all absolutely terrible. Hate what they did to the symbiote storyline. I didn't want this (honestly, no one did.) Hope they can salvage it with the second one, but I'm not holding my breath.
Me and a buddy are already going into Venom 2 NOT wanting to really support it (cause realistically we want it to be part of MCU) and assuming it will be worse than the first one. I hope it's at the very least a fun ride.

The amount of hate this movie gets honestly astonishes me. I mean, I don’t by any means think it is incredible. But I had a great time with it. I think it is certainly better than the worst the MCU has to offer (like Thor: The Dark World or The Incredible Hulk). It’s a good, solid if not entirely comprehensive as a film.

He clarifies better in the comments. I agree with him that Eddie isn't a wacky slapstick comedy goofball when he's post-Spidey but that other hosts can definitely alter the mood and personality of the symbiote.

I don’t often dislike movies, but man is this movie a turd

Trash movie is still trash. Only cool part is Venom himself (not the character, but his design/look). Seeing him in a live action movie is awesome, but the writing, acting, casting is all absolutely terrible. Hate what they did to the symbiote storyline. I didn't want this (honestly, no one did.) Hope they can salvage it with the second one, but I'm not holding my breath.
Me and a buddy are already going into Venom 2 NOT wanting to really support it (cause realistically we want it to be part of MCU) and assuming it will be worse than the first one. I hope it's at the very least a fun ride.

Seeing how positive Tim was about this movie should give people some apprehension about taking his future takes on future film reviews and opinions seriously and instead take anything he says with a grain, nay- a bag, of salt. Because... YIKES. That LASIK operation didn't do him any favors.

The amount of hate this movie gets honestly astonishes me. I mean, I don’t by any means think it is incredible. But I had a great time with it. I think it is certainly better than the worst the MCU has to offer (like Thor: The Dark World or The Incredible Hulk). It’s a good, solid if not entirely comprehensive as a film.

This movie is reminiscent of a pre mcu and pre superhero being popular in general where if it had come out in thlse times it would be considered a decent to good comic movie. But this movie being released so recent is bizarre to say the least. And it doesnt help that this movie had success which means a good venom in the mcu is less and less possible as the days go bye.

Tim really needs to read more Venom comics. His version of the character is way off.
I think the perception comes from his 90’s comics like Venom: Sign Of The Boss where Eddie is written as more comedic when fighting crime. It’s just the character has evolved so much over the years and had different hosts that his comedic nature is not really a staple of the character anymore. Like Rick Remender’s Venom deals with Flash Thompson’s alcoholism and Donny Cate’s Venom deals with Eddie killing a kid in a hit and run.
He clarifies better in the comments. I agree with him that Eddie isn't a wacky slapstick comedy goofball when he's post-Spidey but that other hosts can definitely alter the mood and personality of the symbiote.
This is the kind of film series that will continue to make big money because it’s care crash entertainment! We all hate it but you have to watch it because it’s so bad
I get the whole “venom is a goofy character”thing bc it is true in the comics, but I think it works bc he’s a violent psychotic villain who plays off of Spider-Man also, not some dumb anti-hero. glad the guys disliked the movie. was super surprised at the strangely popular reception when this came out. There are so many movies I can understand why people like even though I personally did not, but this one literally checks all the boxes off for what makes a terrible movie lol
Venom was not goofy in the comics Tim sorry but lol. Mainline venom has always been a tragic character if anything fueled by hate of Spider-man and manipulating Eddie brock initially using his hate against him but growing to care for its host. This move is fucjing stupid 🤣.

This movie is just atrocious and bad in every way. I remember laughing so much throughout it tho cuz of how ridiculous and bad it is. Worth watching just to see how bad it is tbh.

Right?! Both their view on that "movie", and this Spider-Man list, their stances are sooooo off on some things. It's actually infuriating. Rise of Skywalker is one I almost walked out of, have yet to do so for a film though, holy shit that was a close one my god.

Weird that Tim uses the fact that the MCU is hard to live up to, as a defense of Venom not being that bad on its own! Usually he’s the master of comparing everything to the MCU, every time he doesn’t like a movie in another franchise…
