    One of the character traits of Peter Parker is he can’t seem to catch a break, which is one of the reasons Spider-Man 2 hits perfectly on the whole struggle between the hero and the man, and when his complications in his own personal life start to complicate his responsibilities his Spider-Man the possibility of quitting actually becomes very realistic and understandable, I think the guys kinda forgot that Peter Parker is just a normal guy at the end of the day, he never asked to be Spider-Man or the responsibilities he now has to carry constantly every day, and Sam Raimi did a fantastic job of understanding the character and how being a “superhero” changes everything in your life and decisions you have to make

    That's why this is the best spiderman movie because they get that spiderman is ruining Peter's life and Peter is ruining Spider-Mans life and him coming to terms with that he has to make compromises to be the best man he can be as both that's what the character of spiderman is and they captured that perfectly

    Thinking Homecoming is a better movie cos the Peter Parker/Spider-Man portrayal is your Spider-Man is justified but to say that Spider-Man is not even a GOOD movie (Kevin & Greg excluded) shows that you need to take off your Homecoming tinted glasses off.
    Are the scenes/dialogue corny at times and certain scenarios do not make sense? Yes but then every movie is guilty of that. A large part of the movie focuses on Peter and his struggle to keep balance of his personal life with the weight of responsibility he feels he has to maintain. But that's the reason why this is one of the best superhero movie.
    We get to empathise why he feels like he has to be just Peter Parker and give up on being Spider-Man as he is losing the most important people and aspects of his life to shouldering his moral compass. Add that to having a meaningful villain who not only is iconic due to his physical and intellectual threat to the hero and city but being portrayed as one of Peter's heroes whose life's work ultimately leads to the destruction of his well-intentioned vision and both his wife and his own death.
    The guys clearly don't want a self-contained Spider-Man movie that shows a Peter that has to deal with the realistic consequences of being a superhero which directly impacts the people in his life or face losing part of him that was gifted to him for the greater good and just want a fun, non impactful movie with jokes and connection to a larger universe.
    EDIT: Having watched the whole review, they really shit on nearly everything from Nick wanting a WORSE villain out of Doc Ock to Andy hating on every action scene to Tim thinking iconic scenes weren't done right. Greg and sometimes Kevin clearly liked the movie but felt the negativity and refrained at times. First time I've struggled to complete a piece of content from the guys due to weird hate. PS just watched the movie a few weeks ago and did a 360 from loving it to getting bored by it to loving it again especially after re-watching the recent MCU movies

      I get it cos comic book characters have different takes. My Spider-Man take is based on watching the 90's animated series and the Raimi trilogy (although 1 & 3 aren't great) which portrays an older Peter and more serious than most versions

    • @librarygary1618
      @librarygary1618 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those things you said are in every movie? It not making sense and being ridiculously corny? Yeah that's not in homecoming, that's why you can't make a case for it being an objectively bad film. Nobody's saying you can't like Sam Raimi's take or that it's not entertaining, from a film making perspective there's holes in it like a buckshot spread.

  • @LochNessHamster

    I've been rewatching these movies in anticipation for the new Spider-Man game, and I've started developing a theory that this version of Peter Parker might actually be mildly autistic, and it's giving me a new perspective on his character.
    My current girlfriend has a mild form of autism, and a big part of our bonding has come from me learning to understand her, how she can express herself, how she can't, and seeing the person she is inside beneath her sometimes messy, difficult to navigate social exterior.
    And relating that to Peter in this movie really helps me understand him a lot better than I ever did before. He comes off as weird, awkward, difficult to read, and sort of sad on the outside, but the movie gives you a window into who he is on the inside. He's a brilliant person, and very kind-hearted. His powers and persona give him a way to express himself in a way he never could in regular life.
    I think this theory also helps explain why he's so utterly inept at reading MJs distressed emotional state in Spider-Man 3. He can't pick up on it because he's never been good at reading subtle social cues. The only place he feels like he really has any control or understanding of his life is as Spider-Man, so that's where his head is at.
    He's goofy and cringey and often hard to watch, but that's really the point. He's a much more complex character than he seems on the surface. Nobody sees it on the surface. That's the crux of who Peter Parker is. And it's what makes him one of the most engaging protagonists in a superhero film to me. There are enough superheroes that are cool. He's a superhero that's a dork, and the writers really understood that.

    I love you guys and fully respect your opinions but this was a tough one to watch. The negativity is just so intense. I feel like you might as well be reviewing Green Lantern. I fully admit this movie has flaws but it's also super fun and gets things right about Spider-Man that Homecoming fails to capture.
    I think Homecoming did a lot right (acting, comedy, villain) but ultimately I feel like Peter seemed too childish. Stay with me, I know he's a kid, but I always felt like Ben's death aged him beyond his years. I didn't feel like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. I didn't feel the Parker luck or the true burden of his split identity. His major issue was no one would treat him like a grown up... which they shouldn't because he isn't one...
    Also, I get that Doc Ock's motivation isn't as nuanced as some MCU villains but "good guy that tragically loses his mind and becomes horrifically violent" is the formula that created nearly every Batman villain (especially in BTAS).. I think it worked very well here.

      They don't, especially Nick since he's the one who brought up that point (which is ironic since he went to film school).
      Nick not understanding on Peter getting shit on constantly shows he didn't even watch the movie properly. It's actually realistic. Why would the person you love wait around for you if you've never expressed your love for them? Why wouldn't you get fired from your job if you're not dependable, like Mr Aziz says? Why wouldn't your grades fall if you're not doing your homework? Why wouldn't your friendship with someone deteriorate when you're keeping a secret from them?
      Nick even says something worse when he says Peter is a bad human in this. I never knew saving 2 kids from getting run over by a truck is worse than delivering some pizza on time. I didn't know stopping a robbery and letting the criminals get away is worse than watching MJ's play which will be shown on other days anyway.
      That's literally the point of Uncle Ben saying 'With great power, comes great responsibility.' Peter is sacrificing his social and work life to save and help others because no-one else has his power.

    • @MikeSW
      @MikeSW 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@agentahmed7350 I think Nick means "bad human being" in the way normies mean "bad human being." People try to motivate themselves to do better and achieve more in their life - tangible goals. Generally this results in a person having a mind for the dos and don'ts of life. They have it in the first place because they want to believe that they ARE that way or at least are going to become that. These things are then applied to other people in the same way that that person judges themself. It's just blue-collar bitterness. I don't think he means morally bad.
      Also, Peter is losing grip on his life, not because he is a good person, but because he won't accept why he does what he does. His arc has as much to do about the guilt of killing a man and what happened to Uncle Ben as it does protecting Mary Jane from his life of heroism.

    Went back into this trilogy thinking that Homecoming wouldn't be contested, but fuck me: Spider-Man 2 is better. It's weird because it's just an inferior La La Land so I kind of still clutch onto Homecoming more because it's a bit more distinct to me, but 2 is still a better movie. Out of the three, this one is the pinnacle of the Golden Age Hollywood/Monster movie tone the trilogy has. So much heart to it. Kind of makes Homecoming feel vanilla and uninspired in comparison. I doubt I'll ever really revisit the Spiderman movies again, but if I do, 2 and Homecoming would be the go-tos

      An inferior La La Land?? How?? La La Land wasn't that fucking great.

    • @MikeSW
      @MikeSW 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LukeLovesRose La La Land has more consistent characters and stronger direction. You also get a more in depth look into both sides of the relationship behind the aspiration/personal responsibilities vs. Significant other theme. Greg said at points in this vid that MJ was just a plot device in this movie; I don't think that's entirely the case, but I don't blame him for thinking that when they don't really follow MJ all too closely. She is has discernable conflicts, but we don't get to see enough happen with her to justify calling her a main character (which she kind of needs to be for a story like this). I don't think the gap in quality is immense, but I do think Spider-Man 2 is an inferior telling of this story.

    I haven't watched this review but wanted to drop some Spider-man 2 thoughts. I watched every Spider-man movie leading up to the new game and have to say, what a fantastic movie this is. So much of the character work in this movie goes so unappreciated. The cheesey moments that yes are 100% that goofy on purpose are legitimately funny. The speech that Aunt May gives Peter when he's given up being Spider-man had a legitimate impact on my life when I was younger and resonated just as much, if not more now that I'm in my mid 20s. Also the action is IMO the best out of every Spiderman movie. TASM has some great little moments where he's far more flexible/agile etc. But this one has real tension and weight to it, anytime he's fighting Doc Oc (who's amazing in this) you really feel those hits and the sub way battle needs no introduction. Homecoming is probably my second favorite because Tom really is THAT much better than Tobey, but seriously this is a legitimate great movie. Thanks for anyone who bothers reading this wall of text, also I'd recommend Marcus' video about the Spider-man movies on Cosmonaut Variety Hour, or Captain Midnights channel in general. Cheers

    The more this series continues, the more its becoming clear they should have done a different kinds of movie series (Harry Potter or something else) and shouldn't have jumped to the old superhero movies immediately because its become clear those MCU rose-tinted glasses are too fresh. It becomes painful seeing how this just becomes shit talking most of the time.
    EDIT: I have to at least give Kevin and Greg some credit for attempting to finally see the movies through the lense of when it came out. Yes the movies have some flaws but the criticism being rooted from MCU-like perspective and too much emphasis on "modernity" undercuts any film criticism, which to me hurts credibility from people like Nick and Tim who I always considered the true film guys at Kinda Funny.

    • @kevinandrewsphoto
      @kevinandrewsphoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Alejandro Segovia - They need to realize that these broke ground for the MCU. We never experienced a superhero movie like this before and it was all so new that we had little to compare it to. They keep holding it up to the Dark Knights and Infinity Wars of the world which is unfair. I feel like if they watched 12 angry men or Citizen Cane they’d complain about it being black and white and call it corny

    • @kevinandrewsphoto
      @kevinandrewsphoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kb0w - correct but superhero movies are judged completely different pre and post MCU. We now look at Marvel films as the gold standard and compare all other superhero flicks accordingly. We’re far more critical of character arcs and villain motivations now because we’ve seen so many that most have become cliche. The Raimi trilogy might seem basic by today’s standards but that’s because so many other films copied from it. At the time it was fresh and new. The panels lost sight of that.

I just feel like there is more to this film than they think. I would suggest watching CinemaWins video on Spider-man 2 to see what I mean.
    Edit 2: I hated this review really. Felt so miserable after it. They say no one who thinks this film is amazing hasn't seen it in years. I saw this film during Christmas last year and I prefer this to Dark Knight. Dark Knight is phenomenal but honestly, I think this is one of the best films I have seen. This felt like a mess of a review with many instances of them forgetting what happens or where things happen. People may think I'm overreacting but thats just my opinion. Spider-Man vs. MJ wasn't the conflict, it was about Peter coming to terms with what he wants and why he does what he does. The ACTUAL change for him comes when he opens up to Aunt May about what happened to Uncle Ben. In contrast, a very sober scene.

The doctor check ups. The chocolate cake. The conversations with Aunt May when peter tells aunt may he was the reason for uncle Ben and the “there’s a hero in all of us” speech???? Not to mention you missed the themes. Whoever the man on the far right is yes peter would *like* to live a normal life with no Spider-Man and just have a carefree time but the fact is *he is Spider-Man* and with great power comes great responsibility. You guys should know from your favorite Spider-Man “when you can do the things that I can and then you don’t, and then the bad things happen... they happen because of you” literally while you guys were dissing that montage you missed the part where yea happy go lucky peter was watching people get mugged and other crimes knowing he has the power to stop it.

Peter being terrible at being a human being, his personal life falling apart, and not being able to be there for his family/friends is the epitome of Spider-Man. The fact that Nick found this as a criticism comes across as not understanding the core of both the film and it’s protagonist, making me question all of his criticism. Tobey Maguire, while not capturing every aspect accurately for Peter Parker, nails the awkward, non charming aspect of early Lee-Ditko Peter, and Sam Raimi realizes this and capitalized on it. Tim's unprofessional shade at 44:57 showed why this was the worst review they have done in a while. Tim throwing shade at an Actor with no regard of almost losing a job also not backing up why Tobey is not good. You make up points sure, but it is clear they are more contemporary. They are just bashing a movie and not making valid criticisms on why they have these problems. CGI aging might've been the only one. The Homecoming Beer Goggles need to come off but so does the Raimi Beer Goggles. I liked MCU and Raimi btw.

    I respect your opinions and you guys sometimes bring up valid points, but damn the MCU really spoiled the way you view other non MCU movies huh.

  • @TheMEXzilla

    That’s a very critical review...weird coming from MCU fans. I believe Roger Ebert said it best,
    “ Now this is what a superhero movie should be. "Spider-Man 2" believes in its story in the same way serious comic readers believe, when the adventures on the page express their own dreams and wishes. It's not camp and it's not nostalgia, it's not wall-to-wall special effects and it's not pickled in angst. It's simply and poignantly a realization that being Spider-Man is a burden that Peter Parker is not entirely willing to bear.
    The movie demonstrates what's wrong with a lot of other superhero epics: They focus on the superpowers, and short-change the humans behind them. (Has anyone ever been more boring, for instance, than Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne?)”
    Anyways, I’m quite shocked at the criticism thrown at the film. It’s a beautifully shot film and has some amazing character moments; some quite, some strange, and some humorous/quirky moments. Ultimately, it’s a about what it takes to be Spider-Man.

    Remove Andy and Nick from these panels cause they contribute nothing. Get people who love films and don't just blindly love or hate something. Also, Spiderman 2 > Homecoming.

    Wait! Nick loves Batman '89 and has made good points on why it is relevant with todays superhero films. However, that movie still has bad character motivations as well as super convenient motivations to get from scene to scene. Not to mention corny or cheesy dialogue, but, Spider-Man 1 or 2 cannot hold up? At least be consistent. And Tim make a different point other than it's not modern. If you can stick by stating that certain old NES titles are relevant and important titles today and critique them on their own merits. Than, why can't you apply that same level of thought when watching older movies?

    Spider-Man 2 not good? You all be smoking some bad shit. Spider-Man 2 is the best Spidey movie, even over Homecoming imo.
    Many Spider-Man comic book fans will tell you the best Spider-Man stories revolve around Peter trying to handle both being a superhero and being a normal person with a life. Ironically? This is something a lot of critics have praised the Spider-Man PS4 game for doing.
