  • When we first started using the splitter, I noticed that after about 2 hours of operation, the hydraulic fluid would get extremely hot-like really hot, lol. The more we used it, especially during extended sessions of up to 5 hours, the temperature would exceed 240°F. Concerned, I called Northern's service department, and they explained that the splitter is not designed for 100% duty cycle; they recommended shutting it down periodically to let it rest. Honestly, that answer wasn’t acceptable to me.
Since the splitter already had a battery for the electric start, I decided to figure out a way to make it operate at 100% duty cycle. I’ll share links to the parts I used once I can, but here’s a brief overview: a local hydraulic shop fabricated any short hoses I needed for the modifications. Now, when the fluid temperature reaches 130°F, a fan automatically kicks on to cool it down, ensuring it never exceeds 130°F. I also replaced all of the hydraulic fluid because running it at over 240°F multiple times can ruin the fluid’s properties.
To further improve efficiency, I made another modification. Originally, the design required splitting wood while standing, but the wood would fall to the ground after passing through the wedge. Picking up heavy pieces of wood repeatedly wasn’t going to work for me. To solve this, I had .375-inch plate steel cut to size by a shop in central Indiana and welded onto each side of the splitting wedge. This keeps the work at a comfortable height and prevents the wood from falling to the ground, saving time and effort.
This isn’t a sponsored video, but if other log splitter manufacturers are interested in collaboration or seeing their equipment tested in real-world conditions, feel free to reach out. For now, let’s dive into the process of firewood splitting and what I’ve learned along the way.
