The photography, the musical score, the acting, was all top drawer. A fine cast of British acting talent, we’ll never see the likes of this epic again, sadly.

The real private Hook was a methodist and an active member of the "temperance movement". He never touched alcohol. He ended up working for the British museum in London dusting the exhibits and books . A good man like most soldiers throughout history past and present and from good honest stock in Gloucestershire.

Quite a few of the actors didn't get to go to the location in South Africa, Hook ( James Booth) and most of the residents of the hospital building and the surgeon played by Patrick Magee filmed all their interior scenes back at the film studios in England, it all matches together very well and it is very well staged to give the impression that it is all one place, in this scene for example a Zulu is filmed jumping through the hole in the straw roof of the hospital at the location in South Africa, and as he appears inside the building and drops to the floor to be shot by Hook , we are back at the studio set in England, same for when a Zulu throws a spear down through the gap in the roof, the view looking down as the spear kills one of the men is back in the studio, it is just so well done that it is fascinating to view this movie and appreciate what a tremendous piece of film making it is.

Why didn't the Zulu's get to the front of the wall, then get every soldier that was there to use their shields in tandem as mini catapults, throwing over each successive wave of Zulus as they came in (the one's that survived the rifle fire, of course). Seems like a good strategy to me. Better that trying to climb over the barricades one at a time and getting shot down one after the other.

@@jimbob465 Why didn’t the Zulus invent guns and develop superior tactics? Because they couldn’t.
Europeans spent thousands of years doing nothing but fighting each other tooth and nail.
Once we got tired of that, we got on boats and subjugated almost every group of people on Earth.
Europeans had to think creatively to survive the harsh winters and rough terrain, hence their advanced technology and civilization.
Africans lived on the most resource abundant continent on Earth, and pre-contact, had not even developed a written language.
As if this wasn’t evidence enough, we’ve given over 40 Marshall Plan’s worth of money (150> billion USD) to Africa and they’ve still yet to feed their own people.
