All the locals were in on the cover up. Even the cops.
Ole Ted(who would walk by me in August 1973 at the Capital)was not driving. He and Mary were out in his car and were spooked by a cop in the distance. So he dove out and let her drive away. she did not know the roads and she crashed the car. Teddy's clothes were not a mess the next morning when he was informed at breakfast.
The same clothes he was wearing the night before. A bad driving conviction is much better politically, than seen messing around on his wife.

Onto a different Kennedy. When President Kennedy was shot, this time the cover up was against them not for them. His death was absolutely horrific and sad, and although Lee Harvey Oswald had something to do with it, either he shot him or he thought he shot him while someone else actually did. The fact is, (in my opinion) he was a scapegoat, that’s why Jack Ruby killed him, to silence him.

My family crossed path with Ted Kennedy in 72 in D.C. We were taking a tour of the Capital, the Rotunda at the White House, to be exact. I was just a young teenager. My Dad was in front of me. Suddenly, we see Sen. Kennedy and two obvious Security Men walking flank left and right of him. My Dad froze up, star-struck by Kennedy's sudden appearance. Because he was standing about 20 yards ahead of him, rather than smile when my Dad waved, Kennedy stared at him and got his Security guys to glare at my Dad and wave him away "out of his presence." I kid you not. It left a VERY bad taste in mind for the arrogance of this Kennedy. Later, in life, I knew an executive in D.C. who frequented a swank bar Ted Kennedy frequently tell me she saw a beautiful busty woman crawl under his table (and she wasn't looking for her contacts). In my opinion, and many others, Ted Kennedy murdered Mary Jo. He was never prosecuted because he was a Kennedy. He was the WORST of all the brothers.

Yes he was guilty of accidentally killing her. He was drunk and drove the Oldsmobile off of Dike Bridge. He escaped the car. She did not. He could have easily walked to a nearby house with its lights on, summoned help, and saved her. Instead, knowing this was a serious crime, he went back to his hotel room in Edgartown, slept it off and never said a word to anyone. He only reported it when his options ran out. He tried to get his cousin Joe Gargan to take the rap for it. Gargan refused. It turns out that Miss Kopechne lived for some time in an air bubble in the overturned car. So, yes he killed her. Her autopsy results were sanitized, and the doctor said she was still a "maiden." Why even include that? Despicable. Kennedy wore a big obvious neck brace to her funeral, though none was necessary or prescribed. The long arm of Kennedy money and power saved Ted once again. Four months later Ted's father Joe died disillusioned.

Thanks for the video, Jordan. My wife and I visited Chappaquiddick about two years ago. Very surreal standing there. Ted's story made little sense and he skated through by being a Kennedy. A ton of things he said didn't pass the smell test, and there are a number of awesome videos detailing them. He knew the area extremely well, he would've had any number of options for help, etc. On and on. I don't believe he drove the car that went over the bridge. I think Mary Jo was driving at the time of the accident. He bailed minutes earlier because he was in danger of being flushed out by police. He didn't immediately report it because he didn't know it had happened. Such a tragedy Mary Jo lost her life in such a tragic way.

Ted spoke to the desk clerk (and possible owner of the inn?) that night, in the lobby, when he came in in the wee hours. That man stated that Kennedy's clothes were not wet. The fellow inn guests who spoke with him the next morning reported that his whole demeanor changed after Markham and Gargan gave him the bad news. What I don't understand is, even if Mary Jo was driving alone and drunk in a strange car, in a strange place, why did she turn off onto a dirt road? She had to know that the entire road back to the cottage was paved. Did she do this trying to elude the cops, who were not chasing her at this point? We will never know. The locals knew, and they kept quiet. You didn't mess with the Kennedys in Massachusetts at that time.

As I remember her family didn't persue a lot after this accident, which I found to be strange at the time. He had real problems with alcohol for years. There were rumors that Mary Jo was pregnant. Hi Jordan. I've read quite a bit about this case and I thought you did a good job giving the facts about it. Like you, I came to think that Kennedy may have gotten out of the car after they drove down that road after the police officer observed them parked, and that Mary Jo may have driven off that bridge, alone. That would make so many things makes sense, like his radically changed behavior after his two friends visited him the next morning in Edgartown. Thereafter, btw, before he went to the police station, the three of them took the ferry to Chappaquiddick, used the phone there at the ferry landing, then returned to Edgartown. One still has to wonder why, like you say, he would put himself at the scene if he wasn't actually there. If only they'd done some proper investigation, interviewed the others at the house, done an autopsy, etc., we might have enough information to figure out exactly what happened that night. But, unlikely we ever will now.

I have always believed that many in law enforcement chose to look away. They didn’t necessarily do this because they were democrats but because of what had already happened to the Kennedys….Initially, Joe Kennedy Sr. wanted his oldest son Joe Jr. to run for President…This wasn’t possible due to his being killed in WWII…And then, as everyone knows, Joe Sr. put his own unobtainable dream (he wanted to be President himself but was unable due to his past non-political life and his troubled ambassadorship to England) onto John, Bobby and then Ted…..And then when you add in what happened to Kennedy daughters Rosemary (a botched lobotomy) and Katherine (her death in a plane crash), you had a scenario with six family/sibling tragedies in roughly twenty years….Granted, Ted’s “death” might have only been political but it made some people to not want to add to Rose Kennedys (the mother) heartache and distress.

I remember the first time I went to find her grave back in the '90's. There was a woman there fixing up her own families grave site and I ask her where Mary Jo's grave was. She looked at me and I believe she ask if I was a reporter/press. I said no, but with my camera, she just shrugged and shook her head no, she dint know where her grave was. I knew she had to know. I believe the local people are sick of the publicity and press coverage all the time about this. And they wont tell people.
