    Also, CBCS offers free grader's notes, so that you can see why your book received the grade it did. You have to pay extra for grader's notes from CGC.

    I appreciate the comparison between the two I do both. Both companies have their pros and cons i actually dont mind CBCS labels and i like their sig verification and they also have a raw graded service which cgc dont offer for you know the small subset of collectors that want to still read their graded copy.

    Hurricane season my books go to CBCS since it's located in the middle of Texas which means no further delays due to a Tropical storm/Hurricane, I live in Texas sometimes it's more economical to make the drive to drop-off/pick up my books than to ship to FL (which also gives me peace of mind).

    I've used both companies and CBCS def has more stricter grading standards. CGC tends to be slightly more leniant on their end making it more favorable for a seller to use. CGC has been around for awhile so I see a lot of collectors tend to gravitate towards them. But dont overlook CBCS, their late to the party but their out there making moves!

      I have been saying this for awhile. Well stricter I do believe I would prefer a more accurate rating over something getting overrated. Plus free grading notes has me favor CBCS over CGC.

    • @buzuxi
      @buzuxi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cgc definately overgrades. Cbcs has the more accurate grading. I think CGC excels in golden age and silver age books. They are more likely to catch trimmed books, faint restoration and missing pages. The same goes with the cgc census a valuable tool for golden age books but on modern books basically meaningless. Thousands of modern day books graded and then many have been cracked open and the label discarded even many already graded books resubmitted after pressing with never notifying the company that it was previously in their databases skewing any census.

    Have you considered doing an update to this video? CBCS has gained a lot of traction since this video and their books sell for the same in a lot of cases now. They now have a census too which takes away almost everything from CGC as far as advantages. It's a great video and accurate af at the time. CGC may be getting too big for it's britches.

    • @pwilson2345
      @pwilson2345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no MAY! CGC has gotten too big for its own good. Something is up with CGC. I sent 4 modern books expedited in April this year. And still haven't received them. I called CGC customer support and a representative told me I won't receive my books until December this year. I also checked the status of these books last week in my CGC account. And all of my books just went into pressing 2 weeks ago🤣🤣🤣

    CBCS also gives a far more fair grading which deters people..why send to CBCS and get a 7.0 grade when you can send to CGC and get 7.5...thus the real reason people use CGC more.

    I like CBCS because they show up at smaller conventions. We have 1 major con a year close to me where both show up but the 3 or 4 smaller cons often CBCS will be there so I can get signature series or just hand off books to save on shipping!!. Oh I'm in Canada so it's also nice to go through CBCS and avoid hassles with the border - they take care of all that for you. I don't sell my books so for my personal collection I don't really care which one...as you say as long as it's not PGX it's good!!

  • @ignskeletons
    @ignskeletons 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is what I recommend. CGC for comics that may be more valuable or that you might want to possibly resell in the future, and CBCS for books that might just be for a personal collection with no intent to resell. I recently found a CBCS Batman New 52 #6 1:25 variant (1st Court of Owls) in a 9.8 yellow grade witnessed signatures by Snyder and Capullo and I got a heck of a deal on it because it wasn't CGC. According to the census, there's maybe 20 or less of these in the entire world signed in a 9.8. As a serious fan of this writer/illustrator I was super happy to get a good deal on it, even if it may not have as powerful a reselling ability in the future without a CGC slab because I have no intentions of reselling it. If it's not CGC or CBCS then I don't even mess with it PGX and other companies aren't even worth bothering with.

    Grader notes are something that CGC needs to offer for free. I've gotten some questionable grades and I would like to know how they were determined but to have to pay to see those notes to me is just a money grab. They take notes on every book regardless so it's not like they are taking extra time or effort to justify the additional cost. CBCS offers them for free but I agree CGC is the more desirable slab to have so I haven't used CBCS.

    • @ryanm573
      @ryanm573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Sartin Yes! CBCS has a QR code to scan that takes you directly to those notes on the issue, which as a collector, I love that since I can’t see the book in the slab.

    Many people new to comics had no idea about CGC or CBCS. A Wizard magazine issue in the 90's, stated if you didn't have a certification of authenticity, then the next best thing was to have the artist date their own signature. Obvious why it was the case, since CGC did not exist prior to the year 2000. CBCS at least can be used to verify the signature. It isn't like people who already had their comic books signed before year 2000, are going to attempt to have the same comics signed again by the artist if they are still alive.

      Just search for a local person that specify in comic book pressing OR when you send to CGC you can request them to press it prior to grading for a fee. There’s a lot of options. I would just say that I heard CGC pressing isn’t the best since they have so many to do. So it’s better to go through someone else if you have the time to wait

    I kinda agree with the ability to get some stuff witnessed signatures, however I have gotten many people at places where CGC were not there so there was no ability to get it witnessed. Also, the fact they charge a lot more to have someone witness isn't bad if you're getting one or two books signed, however, if you're getting many (at one point I got Claremont to sign 100 issues of Uncanny X-Men...have the whole run, working on getting many signed) signed then it becomes cost prohibitive to not only pay the person to sign each book, but then to pay on top of that to have the witness there (which sometimes doubles the cost of getting the books signed).....and what I don't understand is if there is a verification system for autographs, why CGC hasn't implemented that yet....sometimes I worry about getting the signature first, then want to get it graded at a later time (or even add to it (like I did recently with adding John Byrne to Chris Claremont on Uncanny X-Men #108, or Bob McLeod to Claremont on X-Men #94...or eventually wanting to add McFarlane to Amazing Spider-man 299 and 300, or Rob Liefeld to Fabian Nicieza on New Mutants 98)....like I said, it's for my personal collection right now so it doesn't bother me, except when it comes to insuring or taking care of them 20 yrs down the road.

    I'm new to the hobby, just got into comic books (both reading and collecting) during the unfortunate quarantine due to Covid-19 in Feb/March of 2020 but I feel that CGC has put me at rest as a young and new collector to the hobby. I like knowing that I can put my trust (and money!) into a comic and know that what I'm getting is legitimate and that I'm not getting scammed. Having the census data and sales history on sites like GoCollect allow me to not get overcharged. I recently paid $140.00 for my very first ever slabbed comic. I went with Black Hammer #1 (2015/2016) first-print which was the 1st appearance of all 6 major characters on the cover, and it's now been optioned for TV/Movie. I overpayed by maybe $20 but that was my choice because I personally love the series and the characters and wanted to own their 1st appearances. It's CGC graded 9.8 and I'm super happy with it, and I know that it is what it claims it is because CGC is just the gold standard. CBCS is cool too but I'd definitely lean towards CGC in 99% of situations unless maybe you know 100% you're not going to resell a book and you want to find it a bit cheaper for your personal collection.

    So what is the actual difference in price gap between the two grading companies?

    • @GemMintCollectibles
      @GemMintCollectibles  ปีที่แล้ว

      That I don’t know. It used to be a 20% difference, but this video is old and I haven’t really been following CBCS sales. CBCS has recently said there is no different on blue-chip, high dollar books.

    It's great that you don't mind gearing a video to newcomers. When I first started collecting omnis a couple of years ago, I joined the Omni Bros Facebook page and I saw all these acronyms that people were using. But when I asked "What's IST? What's LCS?" I was accused of trolling! The guy in charge ("Riley the 'mo?") eventually kicked me out and banned me after I reported some harassment by some of his bro buddies like Mathieu Douche...can't recall the exact names. Close enough.

    I know PGX has poor reviews from years ago, however most current reviews seem to be positive. So I sent in 10 issues of ultimate Fallout #4. All 10 were just beautiful, with no spine ticks no color breaks no rolls. I special order them to not be in capsulized unless they were at least a 9.6. Now PGX had a perfect opportunity to charge my credit card with a pretty hefty grading bill, however they sent nine of them back ungraded and only grated one of them add a 9.6.
    I was blown away, because these books look so clean and excellent.
    I had no intentions of comparing companies, however I now am considering to send 4 them to cbcs and 5 of them to cgc with no minimum requirements and see what they get graded.

    Does a autograph lower the grading? I mean obviously if it is written out to someone then itnwould but what about if u had a 9.8 spawn and then todd mcfarlane signed the book not the plastic would it lower the 9.8?

    • @GemMintCollectibles
      @GemMintCollectibles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yellow label signature series does not lower the grade and always increases the value. It can lower the grade if not signed in front of a cgc witness and you choose not to get the green qualified label.

    I've met CBCS at two comic cons I've been to. CGC will be at NYCC next month I believe. I'm still uncomfortable with sending my comics away to strangers waiting and trusting in people I don't know to grade my books... Ijs. I'm hoping in the future CGC or CBCS will have on site store locations to do this.

      I took my comics to a local con with CGC last year and it WAS a horror story. The guys didn't know shit about comics and it turned out that only one guy there was actually cgc certified or whatever and the other people there were part of his family that he had helping him. They totally mis priced my sendoff and I was scared for the life of my Giant Size X-men. Dear god. Thankfully the comic shop owner who sent down that doofus called me up and rectified the whole thing and got my submission straightened out. Thankfully my Giant Size X-men and witnessed comics came back to me with good grades. They do give you a receipt with your order number and all that. Worth it for not having to ship yourself.

    Once again, saving this vid in my 'Watch Later' folder to reference later when I'm ready to begin the workflow as you described with all my bagged books from years ago. Will be moving back to my hometown soon so don't have the time to begin cherry-picking the key issues yet but when I do I might, as you suggested, to go thru Mike first for pressing before CGC. I know I have Hulk 181 (pretty sure 180 too) in, what I guesstimate to be, in between 8.9-9.2. All my books are pretty clean. I always had concerns with CGC to take a big chunk of the profit though. Don't they take flat fees as well as percentages of possible ROI based on each book? Thanks again, Gem, for sharing your experienced knowledge! You should have been an investor on wall street!!

    CBCS just doesn't want to do a census until they are comfortable with the size of their census. They are worried about inflating prices for some books they have low census numbers for compared to CGC or something, you know people confused not knowing about cgc and thinking that CBCS census is that exists. They do keep a record of what they've graded, from what I remember... don't quote me, but pretty sure cbcs plans to release a census at some point. Also, word is... you buy the silver and golden age pgx books at 6.0 or so, then crack it, press it and you can get a cgc 7.5 or 8.0 even... people are doing that at the moment I hear. Low grades are more an art compared to high grades is the word I hear about grades. But, I buy CBCS graded comics fairly frequently, given the lower price... high grades are high grades... census will be made public at some point, doesn't look like cbcs is going anywhere, imo

    I disagree slightly about getting the signature of someone who still works in comics verified by CBCS. I was getting comic books signed by artists and writers in the 1980's and 1990's. I've met George Perez, Mike Mignola, and Walt Simonson (among others). If I want to sell any of those books using CBCS to verify the signature (apparently even ones that I have certificates of authenticity for) is my only choice. I think its worth using them over getting a green CGC label
