    • @mzbarsk
      @mzbarsk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I’ve shot and owned most Nikon full-frame cameras. Once you get over the fad of blurring everything in the background you find that m4/3 is better in many areas. First, the m4/3 system is significantly cheaper, smaller, and lighter than many full-frame systems. This is especially true when you start talking about super-telephoto lenses or ultra-fast f/1.2 and f/0.95 primes. Second, often times you want context in your image or to tell a story, so blowing away the entire background is ill-advised.
      Next, let’s look at the benefits of using a smaller sensor: faster FPS, better IBIS, and greater DOF. Not much needs to be said about the first two while the last warrants further discussion. It is not uncommon when shooting full-frame, wide-open to need a greater DOF. You achieve that by stopping down. However, you now get less blur in the background and lose 1-2 stops of light-gathering. If you shoot in a dark environment you then need to bump your ISO which results in the loss of dynamic range. What about m4/3? Well, you can often shoot ultra-fast primes wide-open while reaching a greater DOF. This eliminates the need to stop down and the need for raising the ISO is partially compensated by enhanced IBIS.
      So when does full-frame have an advantage? I can think of only two scenarios. First, when shooting on the lowest ISO, on a tripod, to achieve the greatest dynamic range (landscapes). The price you pay for the improved image quality is heavy gear, expensive lenses, and aching back. Second, when you’re shooting wide-open, at super-high ISO (indoor action/sports). In this case the full-frame larger sensor pulls ahead in terms of noise, even though from the samples Olympus noise looks very clean and uniform but definitely more noisy than FF. For everything else: portrait, travel, landscape (if you value your back), macro, birds, wildlife, etc, by using m4/3 you benefit for a lighter and smaller setup that gives you 2x the reach at 1/2 the cost.

    Very nice bird shots! This looks like a serious piece of photo equipment. It's funny how people seem to either love or hate this camera. The critics are in my opinion going in the wrong direction as it pertains to gear. Why would anyone want to go with FF and the huge lenses that come with that format? This camera obviously does a lot of things better that the FF gear in a much smaller package. Add to that the hand held hi rez mode and the only thing you have left to argue about is bias and stubbornness.

    With the kites can you compare the stills focus accuracy compared to other major brands (probably Panasonic and Sony as the obvious competitors). That would be useful to know. I believe 3 grand is too much for me to move from my G9, but I will try one out once they start appearing in stores. The old sensor and no 60fps 4K means it would need something incredible to sway me to part with the cost of this giant m43. I do actually enjoy the m43 format (unlike many in the comments), but if they want to stay relevant they need to push forward with innovations on all fronts to keep them selling (in my opinion). This was, in my view, a half completed upgrade. If they had plumbed in a new sensor then maybe I could have been swayed, but approx doubling their flagship costs is a lot to take in. Most expect a £4-500 increase between models. I hope Panasonic do not follow the same course, what I'd prefer is a g9 successor with improved sensor, better IS, more computational aspects, 6K video and much better video autofocus (no one I know uses video autofocus on their Lumix cameras).

    Thanks for the review Amy; you covered some interesting features. The E-M1X has some outstanding processing power; however, I can’t help but be extremely disappointed that the sensor is exactly the same as the E-M1 MKII. Without a new more advanced sensor, this camera is seriously under-cooked! Olympus make some amazingly good lenses and for now I’ll continue to use them on my GH5 and G9. If I start to crave for greater image quality then I shall hang out for the new Panasonic S1R to see how that stacks up.

    I can see the camera being good for fast animals - but I would never go out and shoot landscapes with this camera. My Sigma Quattro H does this job perfectly, gets out four times the amount of colors and color depth as well as highlights and shadow information. At this price point, I wonder why people would not rather buy the Sony A7III or even the R model for high res. As a professional photographer I like to be in control - I am a fan of Olympus features but it looks like the camera is made for professional morons - why use a software nd filter? - I can see the handheld high res in low light - but heck it has limitations if the scene is moving, and you end up with a huge file with not much shadow and highlight recovery. It feels like we are shooting tanks with pistols. I can see the Olympus cameras as travel and spontaneous cameras but once you had some results with the "big baller" cameras it's hard to look at. And yes I am an E-M1 Mark II owner so I know exactly what quality the results have - it has the same image sensor as this "new" huge brother.

The A7Rii was about the same size and only about 100 grams heavier. Olympus need to recognise that the advantages of using M4/3 are rapidly disappearing, and need to follow Panasonics lead in developing a full frame alternative.

      If MFT is dropped, I might drop out of photography. FF system is to heavy, and to big. atomikmaster1 If your only need is to shoot low light, action sports then certainly full-frame would be a better choice. For everything else I am not so sure. Travel, landscape, on-location portraiture all benefit from using a smaller kit. Add to that ultra-fast primes that don’t cost the price of a car and m4/3 is a solid choice. Again, blowing away the background gets old quick as all the images start to look the same. Adding context with a mild separation can easily be done with m4/3.

    • @mzbarsk
      @mzbarsk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      atomikmaster1 First, APS-C kits are so-so. Many of them are stripped down FF bodies with a smaller lens selection than FF. They are also not significantly smaller than FF kits. In other words you are not really getting the benefits of a small kit offered by m4/3, so you might as well go with FF.
      As far as blurring goes you can certainly do that with m4/3 just not to the extent of FF. Controlling the DOF is done with aperture, camera to subject distance, subject to background distance. For aperture Olympus offers plenty of ultra-fast primes and the other aspects are just a matter skill and know-how. In my experience I rarely want to completely blow out the background as you lose context and storytelling. I also find that those who rely heavily on blurring backgrounds use that as a crutch to compensate for poor composition and isolation.
      In short every camera is a tool with advantages and disadvantages. Medium and large format cameras have a larger sensor with an even greater dynamic range than FF. Does that make them superior? Does that make FF a crop-frame in comparison? No, it just means every camera is suited for different needs.

    I wonder what this overpriced 'Klotz' of a camera with that 3 year old tiny sensor and processor has over a full frame (or even an APSC chip) mirrorless camera which is smaller, lighter, cheaper and better in various ways. A few gimmicky focus settings (if You can find them in that confusing menu system) and an ambiguous 'hi res' setting would not sway me towards this ill conceived brick of a camera. There are other fast cameras around which I think are better value. Olympus makes good cameras and lenses but this one looks like a desperate attempt to keep the dying m4/3 system alive. Even Panasonic bailed out and started afresh. There is no new m3/4 sensor tech in sight. The Hi Res.shot You took is blurred and looks terrible but claiming it has a lot more detail that the standard shot. You are bullshitting here big time. I stopped watching right there.
