    One important thing you overlooked here, Ruth! 'Calculated Columns' is a must if one wants to show the values in a slicer or in other words if one wants to filter. The 'Calculated Column' example that you have shown in the video can also be alternatively done inside a measure with the help of an iterator function (SUMX) and that will also calculate row-by-row. But if I want to create some range groups based on that column value and later use that in a filter/slicer, then that cannot be done. In that case I have to create a Calculated Column only.

      That is awesome : ) Spanish blood is great : ) I have some great Spanish friends and now I have one more in you! Always for me, I just have too many new entrepreneurial ideas, (as a business owner in the 1980s and 1990s and now as an educator), so when i have free time, it is time for me to create and innovate. I guess that means, since i love my work, I get to work most of the time.

    Is there any scenario or comprehensive rule, where we definitely have to use calculated column essentially (i.e. where measures cannot be used) and vice versa OR All the DAX functions can be applied via calculated column or measures with equal effectiveness (barring only the race between CPU and memory usage) ?

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bilal Zia Hi Bilal,
      If you want to use the column for a relationship between tables you need To use a calculated column and sometimes you might need to use a supporting calculated column for simplicity or due to complexity.
      I would say the rule of the thumb is to try to create a measure and if not possible create a calculated column :)

      Thanks Ruth. I am worried about efficiency of data model now a days. I am planning a website using Power BI embedded and a little worried how would my model respond with the presence of concurrent users . and whether having too many measures could effect the performance in such case. Also Is there any software that can be used to time how much time is take to run a specific measure ?

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bilal Zia Hi Bilal,
      Yes there is! You can do that with DAX studio,
      Test it out :)

    Hi Curbal , it would be great, if you can throw some light on how to use Microsoft Azure service for storage of data and how to get data into power BI from same .
    Really like your videos , very simple easy to learn new DAX Formula each week.
    Actually I have implemented power BI dashboard for our whole organisation ,that to in a middle eastern firm , which now has moved light years ahead in analytics after that atleast on monthly financial KPIS

    Got confused , even ini the case of measures the formula remains the same it will not get changed like calculated columns ,, isn't it ? In the report canvas even for the calculated columns based on the filter for ex for a date filter the calculations will change

    Buenos dias Ruth, gracias nuevamente por tu aporte pero veo un detalle y no se si me equivoco. Cuando explicas en PowerBI lo de la Columna Calculada, en el minuto 4:35, el campO AvgUnitPrice es una medida, no una Columna Calculada. Luego cuando explicas la Medida en el minuto 6:41 usas una Columna Calculada. Es una equivocación o es asi el ejemplo? Porque tengo un caso y necesito entender mas esto porque lo que creia de estos 2, ya no lo es.
    Gracias

    Hi Ruth mucho tiempo sin saber de tí, ni estarla molestando con mis ocurrencias quería pedirte un favor y hacerte una pregunta simple, es posible crear una columna calculada que contenga el valor de una medida, por ejemplo tengo una medida que calcula la cantidad de días entre dos fechas (Ejemplo 28 días), y quiero utilizar ese valor para calcular el promedio diario en una columna calculada, eso es posible o estoy planteando mal el problema?, ahí disculpa que te pregunte a tí pero no se a quien más preguntarle. Gracias.
