  • Here is a video about a recently acquired WFL Ray McKinley 902 snare drum.
These are my favorite vintage snare drums because of their sound, looks, feel and reliability.
I show you the drum and compare it to another that I own.
I also demonstrate how to replace the snares if you do not have the specialized originals that came with the drum.
You can see more about these drums by viewing this playlist on my channel: • Vintage WFL Snare Drums

Mine has the screw mount setup for both ends of the wires. I use 15” wires and drill like you mentioned, but the wires don’t sit nicely. I just now noticed that there are two factory made holes in the butt side mount. I wonder if I could use those holes to tie up snare cord. If not, maybe I will try making a plate for both sides and use 14” snare wire.
I’ve also been tuning it to more of a G not thinking that I could not go higher without choking it! I bought my WFL on your recommendation and really like it, but I think it's about to get even better. Thank you for this video!!

      Thanks
You only need the plate for the strainer side. The snares do not need to be centered. If you use the snares I show in the video you can adjust them there and not risk the strainer know slipping as some do from time to time.
An "A" tuning works great for this drum since the thin light shell will not choke.

@@rickdior It sounds good tuned to "A". Thanks again.

Did you see someone else put the snares off center or was it an accidental discovery? Obviously it’s intentional but also so unconventional.

      Hi Clay
The original snares on this drum screwed into the strainer and the butt end of the snares were connected with snare wire. Replacing them is difficult for this reason. If they are a bit off center it is not a problem, as long as they go all the way off which will not be the case if you use a standard 14" snare wire and screw that into the strainer. Please watch the entire video to see how I rig that up.

@@rickdior I did watch the entire video and found your solution to be quite clever. By off center I meant closer to the butt plate side of the drum than the throwoff side. Which with a player of you’re caliber is not an accident. I was just wondering how you came to a placement which goes against the unwritten rule of “the strainer must be exactly in the center of the drum!”
Regardless I love your content. Cheers, Rick.🙂

Great solution to the attaching the snare. I have a 14” WFL Classic and could not find NOS snare under $100. I tend to drill a hole in 15” snares’ metal end and attach. It never really works perfectly. This looks like a simple and better solution.
      Thanks!
