  • in this video I compare my two fridges. Im no expert just my 2c worth putting my new National Luna dual zone fridge freezer against my old Engel combi. What will come out on top in my opinion? You need something reliable, efficient in your 4x4 especially for those remote 4wd trips. let me know your thoughts and have I missed anything?

Great review mate, but the cover on the National Luna is not for protecting the fridge, but to protect everything else you own from the fridge. The fridge can take a beating and is built for that. The ground on which it sits without cover, can also take the beating it gets from National Luna.

Hahaha great little write up that mate. They are a bloody good fridge hey. Had it in some extremely hot circumstances and it was flawless
Had a few screws come out that hold on the control circuit board but put them back in and no issues 👌

National Luna is my preferred choice. Mine is about 12 years old and going strong. Rarely off as used as second fridge on 240v when not travelling. Stuck a piece of 6mm Dynaliner on the bottom of the refrigerated portion to help with insulation - solves problem of jacket not covering underneath.
Previously had an Engel but don’t like the cooling plate set up - difficult to clean behind the plate if there is spillage. NL - simply wipe out!

They make a great fridge don’t they. Have a bushman upright now in my current setup and while being easier to use it’s definitely no where near as efficient

Great review. Just one thing to remember, the National Luna at start up uses more power in order to reach temperature quickly. Once it has reached it temperature it should use about 2.5A which is considerably less than the Engel. Also a tip on keeping the lid up when not in use, try flipping the lid latch up and letting the lid rest on the latch.

I own an Engel 80 litre combi with cover, I’ve had it a couple of years now with no bad issues. One thing that does happen is you can easily knock the temperature dial when opening and closing the lid, especially with the cover on,then next time you look it’s + 2 degrees or something. Besides that I love it.

Wishing I could be enthusiastic about our 50l National luna.
They use their own Chinese built proprietary compressor that’s power hungry and constantly cycling.
Ours arrived broken out of the box
Waited 1 month for it to be fixed
Still has never achieved the freezer temperature the specs say even in aircon room on ac.
Temperature all over the place and extremely slow to get back to temp if you open the lid or add warm items.
    Averaging 58 - 68 ah per 24 hours
Highest being 85ah in 24 hours
Peak amp draw of 8.9 amps
If using 1 compartment for drinks need to set it on -4* so it will sit around 0.5 - 3* when opening.
    Constantly full of condensation.
Comparison, families 20yo 40l engel set on 1.75 dial without latch constantly opened for drinks and warm drinks added sat on 0.5* with our thermometer.
The warranty team respond like your an idiot and there’s nothing wrong.
They market these fridges as lowest amp draw, fastest cool-down, accurate temperature control.
Our friends $600 oztrail sitting alongside ours did better.
Test a National luna completely empty it works.
Use it as a fridge/freezer it fails miserably.
Take a look at the South African National luna owners page, you will see many unhappy owners with the same issues I have.

    • @4x4brothers
      @4x4brothers  ปีที่แล้ว

Wow I'm really surprised to hear this. I no longer use the NL as I now run a upright fridge but during my time using it the only issue I had was a few screws holding components to the exterior come loose. Amperage wise it's still to date the most efficient fridge I've owned and even in the outback on 45 + degree days (so would be much hotter in car when parked up) still had no issues with freezer keeping ice creams and icey poles frozen. I wonder if there were things that have changed along the way either before or after that are the reasons behind your bad experiences

    • @lukewatkin7420
      @lukewatkin7420 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@4x4brothers They previously used a secop compressor. They now use their own proprietary “offroad compressor” made in China.
Owners are reporting these are no longer energy efficient like the secop versions.
Took near 40 hours with mine set on -24* to just start freezing zuper doopers that’s due to the fact -24* only ever really gave -18* to -20* max if it wasn’t opened for days.
After placing 15 zuper doopers in the bin temp fell to -10* and 6 days later only managed to get back to -14*
National luna also don’t take the temp from within bins like engel or evakool.
Strange silly design they have the probe against the wall within the wall cavity.
I hope ours can be fixed but looking on the owners site theirs numerous reports similar to ours.

I bought a brand new NL 52l Weekender in 2007.
I was ecstatic with the cooling and space. (NL recommendation was get the single compartment, not the double).
After a year i did a long trip whereby the whole "inners" dropped out.
NL after sales was disgusting and i left the fridge on the showroom counter and walked out only to have the owner of NL come out and resolve the situation...outcome was all the nuts, screws and bolts were loose...a quality problem).
Up until 2022, i was always uncomfortable with the reliability of the NL because of this.
I took the cover off, in 2022, which was the first time it had ever been off and found that the whole mechanism was again loose...very disappointing.
I have now purchased a second hand Engel 40litre, and will hopefully have confidence with it being in the back of my bakkie, (Ute sounds feminine).
PS: if u have a cover on ur fridge/freezer, cut the netting off the cover which is around the compressor as it restricts the airflow.
    A great video...thanks..(from SA).

Had good and bad with both. 74ltr s/s dual door NL was an awesome fridge 13yrs old still going strong. Also added at the same time was a 50ltr weekender thats had an absolutely abusive life is now in my care also, the 50 is cracked and shows bulges inside both bins but after some rapid fix and an aftermarket seal is going well again. both these fridges lived on the back of utes. Replaced the 74 with a 95ltr s/s dual door, exactly the same but just 4” higher, initially was atrocious power wise, couldnt keep a 100a/hr up to it for two days, an absolute lemon door sealing wise, even after two sets of new genuine seals is still an issue, so i added another small seal, double each side, is a lot better, but now it has died altogether(out of warranty of course) so it lived for two days on 12v and the rest of its life either off or mostly on 240 as nothing more than a home esky, sadly. Have a dead 40ltr engel and a disappointing 21ltr thats noisey, continuously seems to be running and just a basic unit with very poorly designed control dial that is really easily changed if bumped, no inner temp readout is a nuisance as its a fine line between frozen and too warm, but its still going I’ll give it that, still under warranty mind you, and they need a bag to make them more consistent temp wise, hot vehicle doesn’t do it any favours it soon will be doubled sealed as well! Engel is my last choice but the little unit was purchased because it’s the only thing that would fit. I’ve hated that 95 from day one but still stand by the run that 74 gave as matched by nothing, even at temps under a black tray tarp in excess of sixty degrees it maintained-18, loved it should never have so called upgraded. NL no1

You have been through alot of Fridges mate so definitely know your stuff. That's awesome the nl is still going strong even in the back of a ute. The NL are a great fridge, do a side by side test on amps used over 12 or 24 hours, our 60 litre twin can get as low as 1.2 amps per hour with both sides near full and set to freezer which is way less than a 40 litre Engel I had previously. BUT, it rattles like an old Engel in the back of the car over rough surfaces, not sure if they all do it?

    • @4x4brothers

Wanted to do that but being so cold in Melbourne atm didn't feel like a good bang for buck test need hot weather to get them to cycle more. This does have a rattle also on rough surfaces but no more than the Engel did either

I just did a test on my 60lt twin over 24 hours at 19 deg ambient temp and it used 23 amps in 24 hours set at 1 deg on the fridge and -6 on the freezer, used 1.7 amps with freezer set on -14 and fridge on -6 same ambient temp (fridge empty on both tests) I had an Engel 60lt combi but sold it due to having to run one side as a freezer all the time and if not you only have a small fridge. NL for $300 more (60lt twin) is a clear winner for me.

Shannon that isn't the big one. The big one is how much they use over a period, say 24 hours. That is where the NL will shine with it's massive insulation and terrific lid seals as grant parker states below. It's not about how many amps it draws at set temp but how many it gobbles up over time. My money is on the NL to be the lowest. Fun fatc: The Waeco CFX units have it over the Engels apparently for AH (I don't own either drat it!).

The boys suck at closing things and will never use the buckles. If they can just shut the door and have it seal like a kitchen fridge, that would be sweet (while the camper is parked). The other option is that the camper has an option Dometic CFX3 75DZ. It has lids that semi-close but then you have to push down and "click to latch". Might be easier to close for a kid, but not as easy as just closing the NL door. Dometic CFX3 has me worried a touch about its reliability too, but I'm new to fridges. Thanks!

In my opinion back when they arrived here nothing was as good as a NL, i was happily at my expense involved with promoting that first 74 dual door here, initially they were excellent to deal with even though used my ideas freely offered at the time with due course of possible changing of some ways of operation or design to make them a little more internally better, space wise and led lights, for freely retesting yet again if possible. But when the troubles started immediately with the 95 customer satisfaction fell to bits, there was none, the issue was not resolved, the fridge should have been asked to be returned and replaced after the first trip back and no change, the words were, if you don’t like it then sell it! How do you sell a known new faulty product to someone else? Let alone with a 3g price tag, who looses here? Both parties external! My morals don’t allow that. It rightfully should have fell under the three yr warranty at only a month old... caveat emptor!
For the external size they take up, internal size, efficiency and cooling abilities in our harsh environment, all or near all other fridges started to fall in to the copy, resemble, and try and be as good syndrome, NL set the fridge standard today in my opinion, the stainless steel unit does not need a cover for any other reasons then to try protect it being rubbed on, i only ran a cover to try and prevent dust around the seals, yes they were/are expensive and although in years past I promoted them at my expense i did so because they are very good, well the 74 was unbelievable, unrivalled and the initial service ‘was’ second to none. Sadly not the case with the 95, absolute rubbish yet identical which proved something just wasn’t right, and now a $3000 fridge/freezer is going to cost who knows how much to fix, thats a damn expensive unit, no reliable service since new and now a repair bill to which what it has done hasn’t been seen before??? So should a new trouble/problem in or out of warranty be fixed and taken on board for future reference at the customer’s expense? For companies research benefits? I await and see? Remember its fault is not listed in the trouble shooting area?
My opinion Engel on the other hand are nowhere near as efficient and do require a cover to aid cooling, the heat up as a unit to room/vehicle temp when off much faster, I’ve three and still have a dead 40ltr engel which are far too expensive to fix, may as well buy a new one. The smaller fridge freezers are not cheap, a 38ltr could be purchased cheaper at the time(maybe shop special?) than the 27f/21litre i should reconfirm not 23ltr. But it fits where others don’t so no option if your stuck and no help in pushing those to be remade prior.
Personally what would i buy now if one doesn’t have much funds, after all that 95 was looked at as luxury by many! I’d probably buy a cheap unit because i have seen many perform very well and i could buy 6-8 for the same money, thats doubled my warranty at even only one year each. These new cheap units run all the electronics and bags and baskets and lights and even compressors etc etc So weighing all this up is required. And ps- you know the real benefit of a S/S NL? You can make lunch on the second lid when sitting on the back of the tray of a work ute out of the leeches and ticks height😳🤪😝😎👍

Engels internal temperature variance I found jumps around alot. So far the Luna has been good even locked up in a car with mid 40s outside temperature and then direct sun still only dropped 3 degrees in the freezer and your dead right there man they get hot on the outside with direct sunlight
