@@MusicShed by being inhumanly talented. I appreciate that you're an educator, but I was in jazz band in high school with kids who practiced 5 hours a day. They weren't JD Beck. Maybe JD didn't go to high school and stayed home and practiced 12 hours a day; I don't know.

"ethereal and natural." I think that nails it. They are doing this so relaxed and effortlessly, that this prepared and rehearsed piece almost sounds like they are adlibbing.

Seen them with Chon last year, was a great show. Would honeslty love some more Chon, you should check out Waterslide it's one of their newer albums unlike puddle which is off their EP. I also recommend (Plini - Cascade, Polyphia - G.O.A.T.) Love the videos though, keep them coming.
I'm sure you already know this and you're talking about trying to play it exactly like JD and/or Domi, but this song is actually a cover from Weather Report called "Havona". You might give that a listen, too, to give you even more ideas.
I like your message early in this video where you say "DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO" Watching a video by famed bassist Victor Wooten where he essentially says the same thing. Music is an expression of the person and since we're all individuals, our expressions will be individual. Was in a guitar center where an older man was playing bass with a young man. Look like he was no older than 19 or 20. The older guy asked him to play a particular chord and the young man didn't know it. Didn't stop him from finding the right key and playing along which I thought was cool. He played by ear. The older man started saying to him, how come you don't know the chord. If you're going to be a pro you have to know chords and music theory. I chimed in immediately and said that's completely not true. Young man just play. That's what artist do. The older man turns to me and says what musician of note do you know that didn't know chords and music theory. My response...Oh I don't know. Irving Berlin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beetles, Eddie Vanhalen , Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton...i could go on. Shut him right up.
cory henry tribute to melvin crispell. Domi is wonderful classical background and now playing stuff like oscar peterson and weather report but has her own sound entirely. Cory is most famous for snarky puppy lingus , drummer was larnell lewis:), but he learned as 4 year old in church so his playing has no holes but feel is just off the charts and that performance in that tribute is insane, its a ray charles like lesson in feel. Hes playing keys now with bass pedals because there are no limits, like larnell, in expressing himself musically.
great commentary, I love this group :) a video came out recently where they perform in a larger ensemble, it's in "Zildjian LIVE! - JD Beck (Featuring DOMi)" if you're curious!
Honestly, as a musician of countless instruments and nearly 40 years, these two are INCREDIBLE. I cannot think of anyone I ever played with or seen that play like this. However I cannot agree with your statement that if you have a 4/4 time signature ingrained into our being and your comprehension of it being so enlightened that playing around the 4/4 is a stroke of genius. What JD does is phenomenal. So what are you doing is demonstrating skills he has honed his entire life. He has listened to a lot of technical drummers. He learned unique styles. Anyone who has been a musician for long enough understands time signatures. And a musician should have an internal metronome no matter what. It should always stay constant and you should be able to keep a that consistent foundation inside while playing your instrument and be able to utilize doubling, tripling or halfing with any instrument.
I was really trying to say that I see a lot of kids falling way short of their potential due to a lack of time management skills and not having the passion to pursue something that they’re into.
@@MusicShed Nope. To achieve what JD and Domi have at their age is beyond practice. They're gifted. For example, there's Seth Curry and then there's Steph. 😏
What an unfortunate comment. He's not playing "drum and bass". It's breakbeat which, while it is used in DnB, it's far from being exclusive to it. You obviously don't understand the complexity of his chops otherwise you wouldn't be comparing him to a "beat box". He's a genius, at 16-17 he's probably better at drumming than you'll ever be at anything at all in your life. Sad.
LOL, SAD YOU'RE SAD the drummer is absolutely bonkers and while others have played in this style before I think he's really taking it to new levels my dude is always in the pocket I bet your paintings suck
That internal metronome was one of the first things I noticed about his playing. Amazing insight.
JD beck plays with a click track
