  • Woodturning a $500 USD shoe horn out of a stunning piece of olive wood and green epoxy resin on my woodturning lathe. Once it was carefully shaped on my lathe it was sanded up to 2000 grit before some protective oil was applied and the show horn kit has been installed and ready to use.

I love that a lot of the time I don't know what you are making until it is completed! I don't read the description ahead of time because I like to be surprised. Nice piece!

LoL. I read the comments about a shoe horn and was boggled figuring out how that would be turned.
Anyway, I enjoy the different molds you have been creating to reduce the amount of resin you use.

I need one of these! As the years pass by the bending down gets as difficult. Now you have given me something to do on the lathe. Thanks David, great work!

I didn't read your description before watching the video and had no idea which direction you were going. Is it a rolling pin, policeman's baton? Did not expect the shoehorn. Excellent job.

Drill the hole before you turn the handle, and the hole will be centered. Didn't see a shoe horn coming

Question - Why start with a 4”square block when you’re going to grind it down to a 1” or 2” piece? It seems to me like such a big waste of wood and epoxy. Why not just start with a 2-1/2” square block?

For a shoehorn? Not in a million years. A rolling pin or a small novelty baseball bat woulda been more practical. Like how the wood an resin came out but the shoehorn part ruined it.

How do you think artists make a living? You must have an appreciation for the artwork. Which clearly you do not

Here in the USA a majority of us don't use shoe horns. I completely understand the value of craftsmanship and time put into a project. However if I were someone who used a shoe horn I wouldn't spend $500 on one even handmade.

It is strange how things become valuable. For example a flat piece of art to hang on a wall is more expensive than an exactly the same piece of art painted on a silk scarf. People will pay £1000s of for a sculpture that just sits there looking pretty but not if it is a coat rack or hat stand…. We value useless objects more than practical ones…. Why?
