    I actually preferred the SM7B for your voice for this particular track and resonance of notes in the song.

  • @PJ-uv6ve
    @PJ-uv6ve ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The Spirit by far comes across more clean in post production from what I've seen. It can actually go round for round with mics in the $1k range. The SM7B just lacks clarity and makes more sense as a podcast mic to me IMHO...

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I really like that take!! I totally agree! The 7B is a good versatility choice but not always the best for a crispy vocal

  • @TheTalemaster

    2:48 is why the Aston Spirit. The presence and detail is not shrill as is the case with Blue mics, it's not overly detailed as with some other large condensers. It's open, clear but not overly detailed to where it's brittle.

      Really well said. This has been my observation with condenser mics. It's been a battle looking for what soothes the sound I am looking for. Most condenser mics are too detailed, hence they have the brittle sound which then becomes harsh.

    Thank you for this. I own the sm7b, but have been having so much trouble in post EQ trying to fix too much mid-range and not enough sparkle. I got the sm7b to handle my loud notes, but my local store has this Aston Spirit on sale tomorrow. I never thought someone would do a comparison between the two I just came online to review the Aston. Thank you it's very helpful. In your sample I can definitely hear the muddiness in the 7B and the clarity in the Aston. I found Neumann TM 103 was very harsh-sounding for my voice but fingers crossed the spirit will do a little better. Thanks again.

    I got both the mics too even though I just got the SM7B for you the SM7B for sure, sounds way warmer and it feels like the highs are much harder to control with the Aston and of course, as I am in a room that is not treated very well, the Sm7b should be a better pick.

    That is some dope shit! Was your vocal processed through hardware, software or both? Could you give some insight to the vocal chain used in logic?

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James St. Michael it was definitely a more hybrid processing approach! Normally I run my vocals through a Neve style preamp/EQ before it hits Logic just to give it a little more weight and softness on the highs, but it can be easily emulated with the “Console EQ” on Logic’s Vintage EQ section!

    • @JamesStMichael
      @JamesStMichael 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@looknorthrecordings Sweet! What interface or convertors do you use and what plugins did you process that vocal with? I heard the "warmth" from that pre and had a feeling there was some analog in the equation.

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      James St. Michael my converter is just a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 gained all the way down so that I’m only getting gain from my preamps! And for plugins for the processed versions, I was using a blue 1176 style compressor plugin with the gain reduction all they way pinned and then a Pultec EQ plugin with some 15k boost and 200 Hz boost!

    Hey, very nice video, for a first video, wow!
    Its hard to say what sounds better, both sounds very good in DRY!
    In mix I would take Spirit, because its more detailed (in highs); I think its because of the different frequency response in the higher ranges
    You can see the Spirit has this little frequency boost in range from 7K to 10K, but I am not an audio expert :D
    The SM7B cuts out these frequencies between 7K to 10k...
    So maybe this is the reason Spirit is performing better in the mix.
    But to be honest, if you don´t listen with good headphones (or direct from phone or sth.), nobody will notice the difference between both :)
    Do you own both? I just bought me the Spirit and now thought about the SM7B, it´s just a extreme versatile package :)

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do have both and yeah that’s something I’ve noticed as well!! The 7B kills it at capturing vocals that are more aggressive because of the small lack of detail in the high end, because that part can be the most annoying to fix in post on a belting or screaming vocal, for example. I prefer the Spirit for softer/airier vocals for sure! And the high end sparkle is really pleasant and intact!

    Bro thank you! I loved the Aston so much more it really brought out every detail in your voice. I might get the Aston Origin which is a lil cheaper and just the cardioid pattern. Funny without the beat it was kind of uhhhh, but with the beat it was so fire. That's how all musicians sound to me by the way without the beat so really cool to see when the music and lyrics mix.

    • @kirinervosa
      @kirinervosa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The origin is a perfect choice! I had the chance to use an origin before I got my spirit and I was thoroughly impressed with both, I just wanted the extra mic patterns and gain switch

  • @natehaiden

    I know dynamic mic's have their use cases but I just love condenser mic's on vocals, very open, lots of high end.

    • @ELDRAZI
      @ELDRAZI 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that’s true but you can always add a bit more high end to the mix

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ELDRAZI very true but I’ve noticed that boosting high end on a recording that’s lacking the high end production can bring up a little harshness and it sounds a little less natural than when it’s picked up by the mic. Just my experience!

  • @heartagramskater21

    I think in the processed mix the shure blended in better and was smoother overall, but the Aston made the vocals come forward more. So it’s a little bit punchier with the Aston, however there is a Hiss that comes with that punch. If you have a good computer software to negate that that would be great, but if you’re like me recording on a standalone unit still, it will be more challenging to get rid of that slight hiss in the mid range.

    • @looknorthrecordings
      @looknorthrecordings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I tried to keep it as natural as possible for the dry examples, the Aston tends to clean up pretty well with some gating and EQ for sure! I've also noticed that there's a little bit more rejection that the Shure didn't totally have as well.
