Insane rules Old Hollywood Stars had to follow during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Hello, my name is Peggy, and I am Hedda Hopper's best friend; I worked at MGM for 15 years during the Golden Age of Hollywood, and I know all of the dirt.
The golden age of Hollywood was the period from the 1920s to the 1960s, when the big five studio system ruled the film industry. These studios created stars like Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland, but they also controlled the actresses with strict contracts and many other ways.
    1. Actors had to sign long-term contracts.
2.Talent could be loaned to other studios
3.Actors could not refuse a part
4.Studios would try and tank your career
5.Actors had to change their names
6.Women were forced to change their appearance
7.They had to take acting classes
    8. Voice lessons
    9. Then had to do minor film roles first.
10.Actresses had to uphold an image
    11.Appearance was significant
    12.Wearing pants was frowned upon
13.Male actors were expected to act like gentlemen
14.Actors had to suck up to the press
15.They had arranged relationships and love lives
    16.Marriages were arranged
    17.Some relationships were forbidden
18.Actresses weren't allowed to have children
    19.There were some loopholes
    20.Promoting their films was everything.
21.Getting a Vacation was very difficult
22.Women had to maintain slim figures.
    23.Diets were often restricted.
    24.Fitness routines were encouraged.
    25.Children often worked long hours.
26.sick days were a punishable event.
27.Even children knew not to waste the Studio's time.
28.Actors had to use studio assistants.
    29.Tarnishing one's reputation was inexcusable.
30.Actors had to fight for the best roles.
31.They had to adhere to the production code.
    32.On-screen kisses were heavily regulated.
33.On-Screen lovers couldn't get too comfortable
34.Married couples had to follow the rules.

How sad to encourage Judy to take drugs to keep working late & drugs to sleep. It seems to me they were quite abusive to some actresses.

It's unconscionable how she was used. The studio didn't stop and think how they were harming her, they could just drop her and do it again!

I liked this video a lot, the angle that you worked for MGM and had the inside gossip, laying out the rules for the stars. I saw you mention Marlene Dietrich and would love for you to do a video about her diet, her life, her makeup, etc. like you've done for the other stars. I don't believe I've seen videos for her on your channel but maybe I've missed them? She was a fascinating person who sort of played by her own rules. She had her own lighting person to make sure she looked amazing at all times and towards later in life, if I remember correctly, she used to sort of tape her face up and hide the tape in her hair like a facelift and it caused her headaches. Thanks for all that you do -- your channel is awesome!

Love your videos.. I like that the studios had standards back in the day for keeping their stars looking like stars. Today, there are no stars and no standards.. that is why we love old Hollywood so much.. Joan Crawford said she always when out looking like Joan Crawford.." if you want to see the girl next door go see her" Today most stars don't care about how they dress... I see them all the time in LA. Do not agree with the studios pushing pills, that was bad. However today, stars are doing far worse.. and a ton of them are always in rehab. All that said keep up your great work! You are by far my favorite TH-camr!!!!! Loved the tour of your parents mansion!!! WOW!!!

now? So of the later stars looked great too...like Joan Collins, and many others. Thank you so much for your videos...maybe one on how to makeup like Lauren Bacall, etc. Marian

Marilyn used vaseline under her makeup to get that dewy look. It also made the peach fizz on her cheeks grow & it caught the light, giving her that backlit look. She was asked to get rid of it & refused. Outside of work she like Nivea at the start of her career , then later, Elizabeth Arden.

I knew most of the stuff but thank you for this video. Regarding Rita Hayworth, she was changed by her first husband, because he was just using her to make her look good next to him , she had to follow a really awful diet, exercise every day and just smile, but she suffered all this rather than dancing with her father who beat her and sexually abused. And after signing the contract with Columbia Pictures, she looked different again.
And I would like to ask, did MGM dancer Eleanor Powell have to follow any such rules?
