Carlos Mejia's Workshop the "Art of Work" with Apprentice Jennifer Ortiz

Company of Folk is pleased to present a performance by 2016 Master Apprentice Awardee Jennifer Ortiz (apprentice) playing the marimba on a traditional piece arranged by Ortiz and Carlos Mejia, Master Mayan/Guatemalan Marimba musician and 2016 Master Apprentice awardee. This event was a workshop for the youth marimba ensemble at Holy Cross Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago, followed by a concert with Mejia. This workshop and concert were made possible by a National Endowment for the Arts grant to Company of Folk for the program “Art of Work.” Mr. Mejia received additional funding in 2016 through the Master Apprentice Program from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Mr. Mejia is also 2014 recipient of the 3Arts Foundation Award. Company of Folk receives additional support from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
